Somebody, Call Wedge! Star Wars MMO Finally Adds PvP Space Battles

Sure, running around with a lightsabre or blaster pistol is a cool and integral part of the Star Wars experience. But, for the longest time, Star Wars: The Old Republic has been lacking one of the best things from the mythology: big honking space battles.

Yes, yes, there have been crappy on-rails singleplayer dogfights in SWTOR before. Those don't count. This new Galactic Starfighter expansion adds the real deal: groups of 12 pitting their space chariots against each other in zero-g gladiatorial combat. But, just when you get to start in on all that, depends on your current status in the game. From the press release:

Subscriber Early Access Rewards

  • Early Access to Galactic Starfighter on December 3
  • Exclusive Paint Jobs***
  • Two Pilot Suits
  • Two Titles ("Test Pilot" and "First Galactic Starfighter")
  • Subscribers get the maximum levelling and progression benefit (a Starfighter Pass will also be available for purchase in the Cartel Market beginning January 14)

Preferred Status players will receive:

  • Early Access to Galactic Starfighter on January 14
  • Two Pilot Suits
  • Exclusive Title ("Test Pilot")

So current subscribers get first crack, followed by folks who've bought stuff in the in-game store. If you haven't done either, then you'll need to wait until February 4 to start flying and dying/killing.Still, as far as gambits to get players excited about SWTOR again go, this is a pretty good one.

    the fact that subs get first access is fine as they are actually paying something on a continuous basis.

    preferred status goes to peeps that have subbed in the past but dont currently sub. again not a bad thing.

    and last of all if you are a f2p player and just play the game for free then you get it later.

    A lot of content coming out for this game, bw is really stepping up with this game.

    Funnily enough, not something I've missed from SWTOR. The rail shooter stuff was ok by me, I'm more there for the classic MMO gameplay.

    I love me some skill bloat. Because I love to have OPTIONS. Sweet, sweet options.

      The on rails shooter stuff sucked for me. I wish they had introduced something like "Jump to Lightspeed" from SWG and had some decent open space PVE.

    Is it actual proper space sim dogfighting or is it still the Rebel Assault-style rail shooter? And is there single player stuff, or is that limited to the existing disappointing on-rails chore still?

      It is 3D free flight/control space combat (With Boundaries). At this stage it is limited to 12v12 PVP space combat (across three levels and three game modes) but they have said that PVE content is likely to be added at a later stage either as a seperate mode or as integrated into future content such as Flashpoints or Operations.

      Its off rails dogfighting.

      There is no pve content it is only 12 vs 12 pvp

    How realistic is it? I mean I like my space sims to be as realistic as possible!

      If you wanted true realism, then none of it would exist in the first place.
