Talk Amongst Yourselves

This is where Kotaku readers go to talk about the stuff we're not already posting about. Think of it as the official unofficial Kotaku community forum.

Just found a piece of my watch's clasp thingie that comes out. Took it out, then proceeded to dig out all the crud that was caked up inside. Now there's eight years worth of skin, sweat and dirt spread across my desk. Oops.

      Overshare watchcrud pageget.

No wonder I didn't notice - it's one of those awkward gets that are stuck on the previous page for some reason.

Just wanted to say as a resident of the Blue mountains (we're fine currently) that I hope all you Kotaku kids around the state are ok. Nothing (not even dreamcasts ;-)) are worth risking your life for. Some sad scenes up here but in all seriousness - stay safe. Thanks to the firies. If you are in a position to donate - please do via the salvation army. Cheers.

Eh? People need to be safe, what?

Hm. I haven't looked at the news since the other day where it made me ill.
*checks news* Jesus. Uhm. Yeah. Stay safe, people.

My laptop which is currently 20 months old is dying on me. Used to be that Apple made reliable hardware (yes, I am a traitor that owns a Macbook Pro) but this thing has been a bit of a lemon. Total hard drive failure about a year ago, fixed it but now I'm getting unpredictable kernel panics every week or so (have checked memory and it's not the cause) and last night I had the thing lock up and start beeping at me, apparently because I'd forgotten to turn off the shitty AMD GPU before loading Plex so it had overheated.

So looks like I need to get a replacement laptop. I basically only use the thing for video nowadays but because the bulk of what I watch is anime, and anime subbing groups are run by assholes that put everything into 10-bit which means you need a desktop-class CPU to decode it and can't use h264 decompression hardware, I actually need a decent machine. Basically the only reason I went with a Macbook Pro at the time was that they have well-built casing that isn't festooned with stupid shit and reasonable specs, and that trackpad.

What are my options if I don't want to go Apple again, but don't want a laptop that feels like it was made with a million compromises and half-attempts, isn't made out of crappy plastic and has decent specs without weighing a ton or being seven inches thick at one end?

Don't. I had a Dell laptop and it was the worst thing I've ever owned.

      Last edited 18/10/13 3:11 pm

        You're listing things I shouldn't buy right?

P.S. they make nice monitors though

See I actually had a much different experience with 3 separate Dell laptops. All were great, and one still serves happily today. Although I wouldn't inflict a Dell desktop on my worst enemy, their laptops have been good to me.

Although lately I've ended up with Asus - I have two Asus laptops, and they've been great. One RoG laptop, and an Ultrabook (Zenbook).

I have two desktops at work, a Dell and a HP.

Oh dear. You are the unwilling center of a dirty big shit sandwich.

      Not HP.

You could try install an SSD and breathe some life into the old MacBook?

As for non-crappy plastic models, I think you are limited to MacBooks? I don't know any other aluminium laptops. I could be wrong.

there are plenty of aluminium options around from most manufacturers

You're right, I even recommended a Samsung one to my cousin. I'm going nuts.

Or I'm just oblivious to everything other than my MacBook Air. XD

It's not a hard drive problem. The machine itself is fucked and slowly cooking itself to death.

In that case, I must agree with Cody - no HP. I would also add skip Acer, too.

Acer is also poo. It is known.

13" is too small for my meaty ham fists.

EDIT: Also really crappy CPU that would struggle to handle software decoding my video :(

        Last edited 18/10/13 3:31 pm

If an i5 can't handle it then calling the subbing groups assholes was a massive understatement...

10-bit 1080p with FLAC audio. My MBP struggles with it, a 1.6ghz i5 wouldn't handle it at all.

you do realize that's a 3200x1800 display? I'm sure it'd have enough grunt for what you want to do. 4thgen i5's are pretty awesome
plus it says up to 2.6GHz

              Last edited 18/10/13 4:04 pm

That's all GPU though, the intel HD 4000 is pretty decent. The problem is that the ultrabook CPUs are severely downclocked and 10-bit h264 is entirely software (i.e. CPU only, no GPU). If it was standard hi-profile h264 my phone could do it. :(

The CPU in that thing probably could handle it under Turbo Boost for a bit, but the problem with Turbo Boost is that once the CPU exceeds its thermal envelope it'll progressively downclock itself to cool off again. I need something that can handle what I want to do without without needing to overclock.

Other option: get a new PSU and case, put my old desktop's bits inside, turn into transcoding plex server and then just watch movies in bed on a tablet or something.

FYI, I've been running Plex for a few months now and it's surprisingly great. Streaming to a tablet is just so much better than trying to use a laptop, especially in bed.

Yes, it would be awesome if I could do it. But so much of my stuff is Hi10P and my Plex server is running on my NAS (which is a single-core intel atom, not nearly beefy enough to transcode video).

However my old desktop was capable of playing the stuff back so I'd imagine it'd be okay transcoding it too.

I'd like moar details please, on how you're getting this anime. I do want to catch up on some.

You want info on obtaining or info on what's good?

                Both would be awesome.

                  Are we Twitter Fronds yet?

As for what's good, it really depends on the sort of stuff you like and what you might have seen recently (since there's a fair number of sequel seasons currently running or recently finished).

Good time to jump in on new stuff as well, current cour began at the start of October so you're 2-3 eps into a lot of stuff which is about the point you can figure out if stuff is going anywhere or not.

Do you have a price limit? I just bought an ASUS R501VZ a couple months back and it is pretty good! A little on the ritzy side though.

      Last edited 18/10/13 3:44 pm

I'd probably consider it - I'm usually happy to spend ~$2500 for a good one (thus why I have owned two Macbook Pros in a row. Incidentally my old 2008 MBP is still working perfectly) but I kind of expect to get 3+ years out of it if I pay that much, and I never found that to be the case with most Windows manufacturers but previously had good experiences with Apple stuff. I think this particular model has been a lemon. They moved from nVIDIA GPUs to AMD and the AMD stuff is just not good.

They're past due for a Macbook Pro refresh actually, maybe I'll hold off until then and see.

$2500?! That's a crazy amount! The one I bought was only $1200, hasn't had any problems, and is covered under ASUS' 2 year warranty. Although I don't know what you need it for, or much about specs, so it might not be what you're after.

Yeah, I upgrade around every 3 years and splurge on something pretty decent that I expect to last for at least that amount of time. I used to buy cheap ones but I was constantly having to upgrade and also they were worthless pretty quickly, where the higher-end stuff is still useful to people a few years later when I move to a new one, eg. my sister still uses my 08 Macbook Pro. I had intended to give her my current one when I move to what's next but doesn't look like that's a good idea :(

dont mind me. I'm just curious.

Well, look at you there messing around with html code.

i was just curious to see what was given preference - the anchor or the straight pasted link.

Pretty sure the straight pasted link is parsed as a link purely thanks to the browser, so if it reads a link tag that gets priority. Which, I guess begs this question that I should know the answer to:

Edit: And unedited to bring me out of the deathpool of moderation.

Edit 2: And, disappointing and entirely predictable response.

Tables are about to be flipped.

    Rant ahead

Work is busy today and we're struggling to stay on top of it, meanwhile one of my co-workers (preface by saying he's a nice guy, but he's one of those people who has been at the company for so long that he thinks the rules don't apply to him) took an hour and half lunch break and has had at least 3 smoke breaks of about 15mins since he got back.

Meanwhile, I haven't even had my lunch break yet because every time I look up to leave my desk he's not at his and being in support we need a minimum number of staff available and we are already people down due to annual leave. Posting this is the first time I've stopped working since this morning when I went on Twitter/TAY for 5mins.

    Last edited 18/10/13 3:38 pm

Ugh. People are the worst. And it actually sometimes makes it harder when they're otherwise nice, because you just feel like a jerk if you go off at them :(

Hope you get a break or some other kind of karmic restoration, man!

I figured it would be fairly obvious not to get on the wrong side of a corpse-blacksmith but maybe that's just me?

      On the bright side, Friday?

Not really. Had plans tonight catching up with a friend I haven't seen in 2 months. Really looking forward to it. So naturally it got cancelled.

Fuck the fucking fuckers. In other news, It's Friday and a 2-day reprieve is nigh. Not a long term fix, but focus on the pretty light at the end of the shit-tunnel, brah.

Am attempting to negotiate a few days off work either side of my Brisbane trip. If I get my way, I'll be taking a week and a half off, and it'll all come out of accrued flex time that I've already earned.

It'll be the first break I've had from work since my son was born sixteen months ago. \o/

YOU HAVE A SON?! No one told me. I mean, it feels like just the other week that you made the announcement. :D

Nobody has mention little Lesser Evil Smith to you before. That is unusual, Shane talks about him constantly

      Boardgames, my place, next weekend.
      Chuloopa attendance - Unclear

Sorry buddy - i forgot to reply to that one. Unfortunately i can't attend as it's my bucks weekend and i will be busy getting shot repeatedly with paintballs before soothing the pain with alcohol shortly before forgetting where i live :(

Buck's weekend? The marriage is that soon?!
(You can tell I haven't really paid attention in this place for a while :P)

So am I still the youngest person here?

why aren't you taking your nap?
      go back to bed!

Happy birthday! Wait, it is today right?

I lose track of time on TAY so easily.

          IT IS HIS BIRTHDAY!!

Thanks! Yes, it's today. Just turned 19 :D

          wait... 19?

          YYOOOOOONNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :P

Nah, I think it changed last week and now I am.

When I posted my list of 'things I've played and have really been meaning to get around to finishing', there was an unexpected bonus side-effect of folks like @vonsack or @tigerion saying we should totally do some of the co-op thingies together. Which, y'know. Awesome idea, guys.

Now that I think about it, that list at point 3 is quite large. And probably quite expensive. I could play even one of those every week and consider it a 'present to me' and not need to spend any more money on games for like... an entire year.

None of those lists contained "would-like-to-coop" games! I too, am interested in coop-ing things with various peoples. Perhaps a new sheet on TAYnames, to list some coop-able games we all own? Would help us match up compatible players.

I like this idea. In fact I might look at doing something about it tonight.
Even better idea, you setup the page and I'll fill in my details after you've done all the hard work

I like this idea too o/

You haven't played Rise of the Triad yet?
When you get the chance, play it for five minutes, then stop.
Just to get yourself in the mood for it.
      You'll thank me later.

Mostly because reading the name of it didn't immediately conjure some mental screenshots to orient my expectations. :)

      Yeah i'm down for some co-op !
Theres a heap of pop culture references from the small amount I played of Magicka, def worth a finish.

Alice: The Madness Returns I really enjoyed, wasnt perfect but the concept was really cool. An underwater stage you actually dont mind playing! Each new level is creepy and strange in its own way. It does get a bit repetitive though and they do recycle a lot of enemies. Still I enjoyed it for what they did right.

Also, Specs Ops is a must play.

......or stuff that can't actually be completed because, like... MMO or minesweeper.

Faerie Solitaire? I know dude, some of those puzzles are so hard!

That fucking game hates me, man.

My dad's a demon with that game. He'd seriously spend hours with it on the weekends while talking to work people about boring work things that he probably shouldn't have to be putting up with on the weekend... A national park catches on fire or a dingo eats someone and people get so dramatic! (Seriously, people. Stop feeding dingoes. They lose their fear of humans and begin to demand food, and it's the children who suffer for it.)

All I got from that was Solitaire makes the children suffer. I fucking knew it. I am NOT surprised.

I agree, people should really stop feeding their children to dingoes.

Worse egg finding system ever. So hard to get the last few pets.
There is an easy way to complete all the puzzles if you are interested ;)

          Nooooooooooooommaybe. :)

I'll remember to ping you next time I'm feeling completionary, but I think that one's a fair ways down the list. I'm considering tackling the 'incomplete' list alphabetically.

It's by design. That's why they invented Freecell. Every Freecell game is finishable. Klondike isn't.

I remember when I found a game number (back when they had numbers) that was really easy to finish. I believe it was number 150, I would just play that same game over and over until I could beat it in less than a minute :D

So i beat bioshock infinite, pretty good, not game of the year like people were saying it was, seeing as the "game" part of it wasn't particularly innovative. i loved the story though, i'm a sucker for alternate dimension sci-fi stuff like that.

Probably my favourite part of Infinite was the art direction and attention to detail. I imagine Booker blasting away, screaming at people, "WILL YOU MOTHERFUCKERS JUST DIE ALREADY SO I CAN GET BACK TO READING THIS CHALKBOARD AND THESE FLYERS?"

Someone much smarter than me suggested that if the whole game had been like the first hour of the game it would probably have been game of the year for all years forever.

But unfortunately the rest of the game doesn't live up to the start :(

I thought the end was pretty clever though, it made me feel less like I'd been bait & switched. Hate the gameplay in general but love the rest of it.

Yeah. Beautiful, rich, living world to the Military-Industrial Crate Zone.

    "Hey, can you please-"

*throws laptop in the air, walks out*

"...hold my $10000 that I never expect back?"

      YOU LOSE, SIR.

Oh my god they're doing a new Sailor Moon anime in January.

      Fighting Evil by Moonlight!
      Finding love by daylight!
Never running from a real fight!

I always thought it was "winning love by daylight".

          Yeah it is. =P

Regardless, her relationship with that dude is totally fucking creepy. I don't care if they're destined for each other or whatever the hell they justify it with, she's supposed to be like 13 and he's in his 20s. The more disturbing thing is that no one - including her parents - seem to find anything wrong with this and actively encourage it. :|

            I'll just leave this here:

    *passes out on couch*

        GRENINJA 51
        CHARIZARD 51
        PIDGEOT 50
        TYRANTRUM 47
        DOUBLADE 48
        FLAAFFY 26

Remember to boot up Mystery Gift at the title screen for a free Torchic.

Yeah, picked up the Torchic. Will train it up at some point.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh ended up walking out of school the same time as Sketchbook Girl AGAIN. Shared awkward nods of hello at the lift, but then partway through the carpark she asked if I was going down to the pub. Told her I wasn't this week, knowing she didn't plan to. Then after she said she wasn't either, I made a comment about her having had a rough time last week. EVEN THOUGH I KNEW THAT IT HAD JUST BEEN BROUGHT UP A LITTLE WHILE EARLIER IN A CONVERSATION WITH MY FRIEND AND THE ADMIN LADY, where it was mentioned how she got bowled over by all of three drinks last week and had to go home, at which point she apparently turned bright red.

At least I didn't have to endure the ensuing silence for long, with her leaving in a different direction at the end of the driveway. Still, feeling good that she seems to keep initiating conversation - which is more than I can say about myself, really :P

And no I cannot explain nor reign in this apparent compulsion to detail every little interaction that I ever have with a female :P
God, if I *actually* did that...

To be fair, I detail every interaction I have with females.

It's a great sign that they initiate conversation! You should use that as the ego boost you need to capitalize on it. :)

I would, I just have no idea what to do :P

Somehow, despite the fact that I've had countless conversations with people that have even gone on until the sun's risen again, I just can't seem to make myself have a conversation when I want (need?) to. Unless they're driving things along, I just go completely blank and can't think of a single thing to say. And in this case, it seems like she's in the same or at least similar boat.

Do more reading. There's tons of guides, even on Lifehacker: "top 10 things to keep conversation going" etc.

I have read a few things like that before, but it's hard for that kind of stuff to really stick and be able to think of them/apply them when needed. Learning new behaviours, forgetting old ones, etc.

Yah I know, requires practice I guess. I'm not perfect at it either lol. Gl. :D

I just yelled at the video in this article:

He was like "These little yellow guys" and I was like "NO. NO MIKE FAHEY, YOU ARE WRONG. THEY'RE LITTLE GREEN MEN!"

    My life is very sad.

So after playing trauma centre with @gorzilla I realised I would really like to play Trauma team. Pity it was never released in a pal region. =(

Softmod your Wii. Install the Homebrew Channel and you can break region coding on the system and play any import game.

        Good to know!

Depending on the firmware you're on it's trivially easy. I've installed it a couple of times on mine (some game I had required an upgrade and then re-install via the letter bomb exploit)

If you've got specific games there are exploits for some of them that work on different systems, else you'll need to do a LetterBomb or BannerBomb exploit. It's easy. All you generally need is an SD card and a PC that can put files onto said card. Copy the HackMii stuff to the SD card along with whatever exploit you're using, run the exploit, magic happens and the HBC installation starts and then it's installed. Then you need a homebrew app for breaking region codes. I use Gecko OS (it's on that wiki). You basically load the Homebrew Channel (it's an app on the front menu), run the program and then it should boot the disc cross-region. Very easy.

I managed to install the Homebrew Channel on my Wii, but I never managed to get anything else working. I am a very special case.

I got everything to work except Fatal frame 4. Turns out because I had a red wii, it was too recent for the patch. =(

Dammit I keep forgetting that I need to pick that up!

Same goes for Excitebots. Heard it's really great - except for the practically game-breaking red bars that you have to swing around.

I have added several TAYbies on 3DS - most notably @mawt, @beavwa and @powalen. Addmeh!

Well you certainly didn't add me. I can tell as I'm not on your notably list.

        I did add you, poopface.

I thought I already had you! I'll check.

        You probably do.

You're showing up in my friends list, so I must have added you already. \o/

30 Video Games You Don't Want Your Kids To Play

    The Last of Us
    Gears of War
    Call of Duty
    Mortal Kombat
    Far Cry
    Assassins Creed
    Tomb Raider
    Grand Theft Auto
    Duke Nukem
    Left Behind
    Dead Island
    Dead Space
    Saints Row
    Sleeping Dogs
    Mass Effect
    God of War
    Saints Row
    Leisure Suit Larry
    Left For Dead
    Resident Evil
    Dragon Age

Um, considering they're all MA15+ or higher... Duh?

Apparently Saints Row is so bad for kids that it's in there twice.

      Actually, yeah. That's fair.

Honestly, the first Saints Row game is bad enough that I don't think anyone should play it.

Booo hisssss ohwait. The first one made. OK.

Honestly, I'm not a fan of any of them. 2 Put me off thanks to the way its cars handled like trolleys with jets attached to them, 3 I just found boring, while strangely compelling, and 4 was only really interesting because I am a mad sucker for open world super power games.

Despite all this, I keep buying them, and in the case of 4, I bought it off Amazon and played it illegally before it was released here, and I'm still not sure why.

Ditto for 'Aliens' assuming that means Aliens: Colonial Marine.

Colonial Marines is bad enough that nobody should play it, let alone kids. It was really not a very good game.
Don't know why I finished it. Was so tempted to just stop playing.

Amusing anecdote: I played Leisure Suit Larry when I was a kid. The original game. I finished it, even.

Since it was trendy earlier and I'm always late to the party, games in my Steam list that I have not finished that I didn't drop because I hate:

    - Alpha Protocol
    - Borderlands 2
    - Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon
    - Max Payne 3
    - Torchlight
    - Torchlight II
    - The Walking Dead
    - X-COM: Enemy Unknown

And the list of stuff I have that I've never gotten around to starting but intend to at some point:

    - Alan Wake's American Nightmare
    - Binary Domain
    - Cave Story
    - Crysis 2
    - Dark Souls
    - The Darkness II
    - Dungeon Siege III
    - Dyad
    - The Last Remnant
    - Metro 2033
    - Rage
    - Shadowrun Returns
    - Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II (I don't even remember buying this...)
    - Trine & Trine 2

Obviously I have a ton of other stuff, but it's all stuff that I finished or that I picked up without much intent to play but it was like $2 or something, or where I purchased to support a developer I like, eg. I own all of Carpe Fulgur's games despite not really ever intending to play because I want to support localization of small-scale JP games. That worked out nicely since they're handling Trails in the Sky SC now.

I put more time into Blood Dragon than I did Skyrim...

Loved Blood Dragon, but Elder Scrolls games are favourites of mine.

All I got from that was something about someone handling TitS.

I hear that tits have gotten larger and more expansive over time.

    Clicking Bad

You had to pay off a government official with $33,382,977,968

Who demands that much of a bribe?

I'd play Clicking Bad, but I have 295 HC invested into Cookie Clicker, so I'm too busy to play anything else.

Edit: And smart people. That's who. Seriously, you accept that once, and you're set for life!

Edit 2: Okay, I've started playing Clicking Bad. Goddammit.

      Last edited 18/10/13 9:34 pm

It's a little more short than Cookie Clicker but there's a balancing act between supply and selling. They keep updating it too so have to refresh every so often.

Yeah, I think it's an interesting dynamic. Also, where I currently sit, Drug Mules are way OP.

I have an assignment due! Why did I have to google Clicking Bad?! WHY?!

Dear lord. This game. WHY DID I HAVE TO START!?!?

You and @liondrive should just be thankful you didn't do cookie clicker instead, which is MUCH more involved and addictive. c.c
