This isn’t quite a Last-Gen Heroes entry, but it could be, since Ninja Theory’s Enslaved: Odyssey to the West deserves some retrospective love. It was one of the most surprising games of the last several years, and also one of the most beautiful.
The game was released last week on PC, which means that Duncan Harris at Dead End Thrills has set about capturing it in all its radiant, post-apocalyptic glory. The PC port is pretty bare-bones — I’ve been playing it, but haven’t been all that impressed with how much better it looks or runs. Harris pointed out that the port has some texture discrepancies; some of the ultra high-res facial textures stand out when placed against the plain textures in the backdrops, which you can notice in some of the shots here. But while it may not be a polished port, it’s still been nice to return to the game, and cool that Harris has still been able to unlock the camera and capture some great high-res images.
His first grip of shots are just lovely, they’re below:

POST APOCALYPTIC URBAN DECAY!
I left this on the PS3 due to the low frame rate and low res textures.
Now that it is on Steam for super cheap I will get it – when I finish Batman AO later in the week.
Been hoping this might make it to PC eventually. Will definitely pick it up.
I can definitely recommend this title to those on the fence about it.
I just hated the combat so much. It was just unfair and tedious. The story, characterisation and acting were all really good (although I haven’t gone back to it since the tour de force that is The Last Of Us), but I couldn’t even pass it because of that combat.
We got some very very pretty skyboxes this generation… Except the over use of lens flare and blooms.
Andy Serkis face is timeless.
TIMELESS!
Goddamn beautiful game that was.
One of the hidden gems of the last gen on my XB. Never got round to the apparently excellent dlc, downloaded it but sold the disc on EB by mistake.
Easily in my top 5 of last gen….
Red Dead, Enslaved, Vanquish, Alan Wake, Skyrim
Don’t know the order but that’s it…
EDIT: And i’m secretly in love with Trip….. but hide this secret from my girlfriend.
YOU BASTARD!
I really enjoyed this game – up until the last 1/3rd where the story kinda tanked. The character developed so well up until that point, where everything went weird… To this day, I am not sure what the heck happened!
It basically became The Matrix… and I didn’t like it either, was hoping for something different.
Aside from the ending, I also really enjoyed my time with the game though.
Spoilers!
I need to play this, its been sitting on my shelf for awhile now.
Can’t recommend this title enough! It was a real surprise back when I first played it. It didn’t get much hype at the time and seemed to fall under the radar for most review sites.
It came out about the same time as LA Noire and also had amazing facial performance capture, but delivered it a much more seamless manner than Noire. I really loved it!
The story was cool as well and even prompted me to try and read the old Chinese novel that the story is drawn from. It was a bit hard going for me but it was still interesting… 🙂
