Command & Conquer Returns In A Spectacular Fan-Made Shooter

This is Renegade X, a fan game in development for over six years. It's come quite far since then, and now, it's just about ready to go.

Renegade X actually started out as a mod for Unreal Tournament 3, which meant to bring the multiplayer aspect of the 2002 title Command & Conquer: Renegade to a modern game engine. Eventually, the mod was abandoned in favour of a new stand-alone game, which is what we're getting early next year.

The game prides itself first and foremost on its Command & Conquer mode, which developer Totem Arts describes as a close-up version of Command & Conquer's top-down battles:

Players will be able to fight for two unique teams - the Global Defence Initiative (GDI), a UN international military force committed to world order and peacekeeping, and the Brotherhood of Nod, a messianic international terrorist network that aims to push humanity into the next stage of human evolution.

Players will be able to manage their own economies, choose from over 30 weapons, 15 vehicles, and call in nuclear strikes, Ion Cannons, and airstrikes, and much more.

Each team will have a base of operations that composes of several key structures. Each structure has its own purpose. For example, the GDI Barracks gives GDI players access to special weapons and characters. If the Barracks is destroyed by Nod forces, GDI will lose the ability to purchase these special weapons.

There will also be a Skirmish Mode, which simulates C&C mode offline with bots, and there's a short single-player campaign called Black Dawn which you can try to get a taste for the upcoming game. Mind the hefty download size, though.

Renegade X 1.0 arrives on PC, free to play, on February 26, 2014. Keep an eye on the forums for more news.

OMFG!!!!!! FUCKING FINALLY!!!! OFFLINE MODE WITH BOTS!!!!!! Now if only Battlefield and CoD would actually give us Bots to play with in an offline mode so we dont have to play cheaters, trolls, idiots and general cunts that inhabit online games

Would be nice if it was a bit more like Nuclear Dawn and added more RTS elements.

Renegade is still one of my favorite games of all time.

Sure, the gameplay is a little dated now, but that multiplayer just blew my mind. All the time spend on that... So much time.

By the looks of this game, we are gonna be highly pleased with it.

Renegade to this day has to be my favourite Multiplayer.
I can remember how insanely epic the battles got and the desperate measures teams took to win and stop the key buildings from being destroyed.

From the look of the gameplay, they have kept the feel and gameplay of renegade, but made it more epic and modern. Plus loved the look of the Enviroments/maps they have designed for Online. A must have game.

Although Renegade didn't last long, it was certainly fun while it lasted!

I remember on the Islands map I would get sneaky and start blasting the Hand Of Nod with missiles from the GDI base because you could just hit the very tip of the HON from a certain angle on the beach :p

I remember just going for the enemy harvesters to rack up points haha
man, the memories of that game resonate well with me :)

Oh man, I knew all of the little bits where you could rock up with a vehicle, offload a salvo, and hide before the Obelisk could fire.

Why are we talking about this. Why aren't we just playing!?

Indeed, was the first online shooter I ever played (turned me from an RTS player into an FPS player I might add) and the origin of my gaming handle.
      Good times.

I really hope there is a good AU player base for this. I miss Renegade multiplayer so much.

    THANKYOU BABY JESUS.

    HNNNNNNG! I CANT WAIT

Looks like I'm going to need a box of kleenex

I hope that's not the final version of the Ion Cannon strike, the build up was my favourite part.

From memory, the original game had godawful netcode (second only to Aliens vs Predator 2) and multiplayer was really dodgy over anything over 30ms latency.
