As the US gear up for the launch of the PS4, back in Australia the Xbox One is first. EB Games is putting together a handful of ‘official’ major midnight launches but, in addition to that, an insane amount of stores will be open on midnight for the launch of the console.
The stores receiving the full ‘official launch’ treatment are…
MacArthur Square, NSW
Helensvale, QLD
Werribee, VIC
Knox City, VIC
Tea Tree Plaza, SA
Rockingham, WA
At this stage we have no idea what is specifically planned at these official launches, but we’ll update when we know more. Also, EB Games has an official website for the midnight launches, which you can find here.
Now, prepare yourself for the list of stores. You may want to do a ‘control+f’ manoeuvre here because this list is ridiculously long…

So there you have it. I’ve gone off midnight launches as of late, but I think I’ll be attending one to pick up new consoles. It’s new consoles for goodness sake! Doesn’t come around that often!

Hoping JB announce something soon too.
Speaking to someone who works at one of my EB stores, he told me that CoD: Ghosts had about 30 people turn up, as opposed to the 330 people that turned up for GTAV. Somehow, I doubt that the Xbone will be doing much better. Especially since he flat out told me that the Xbone only had 1/10 of pre-orders compared to the PS4.
I wouldn’t take what someone who works customer service s word at face value. Also some of them are fanbois. Just like us.
Well you can still get a launch day Xbone, Feb/march apparently for a ps4 after the second shipment mid December..
You could play GTA5 the day you bought it. There’s a lot of differences between the two situations.
He even said the main reason people skipped on the Xbone is because they don’t have the internet.
People are idiots then. You need the internet for both consoles to get set up initially, after which neither console needs the internet.
If I know anything…it’s that people are most definitely idiots.
You don’t need an internet connection for the PS4.
Missed the memo on the 350MB day one patch to enable most functionality?
No, I got that, but I don’t recall it saying I need it just to play games.
Good point, I missed that (awkward) and props to Sony for doing that. I suspect though that your average consumer who doesn’t have the internet and uses it as a reason to get a PS4 will be a bit agitated when they find out they can’t even run a Blu-Ray, which kind of makes the patch highly necessary.
I can’t imagine later batches of the Xbone needing to connect to the internet first.
Hahaha neo you got owned!
yeah both consoles have a day one update to enable functionality haha and tbh at least the Xbox one has local servers enjoy battling all the morons trying to access Psn from JPN hahahaha
Uh, what? How did I get “owned” Mr. Dudebro? I’m aware that the PS4 has a day one patch, but it’s not needed to play videogames. The contents of that patch are mostly for online features, with the Bluray/DVD needing it to work being the only real problem.
both consoles require 1 day update, so internet required, unless the store is going to unbox them and patch them for you, then there is no point in buy a release console. wait til future releases when the patch will be already applied at the factory
Nah, the Xbone requires an update, otherwise it’s an over expensive doorstop. The update for the PS4 is mostly for online features, with the Blu-Ray/DVD being the only noticeable thing locked that could be annoying. You can still play games on the console without the internet.
I’m not even gonna think about a new console for at least a year anyways.
If you don’t have internet… Pre-ordering a new games machine should be the last on your ‘keep up with latest technology’ list…
I think your full of it, I’m friends with a few game store owners your figures are incorrect
I didn’t post any figures.
Sure you did.
Yeah you did, if he said 1/10th I think he was pissing in your pocket
.
Do you have a different idea of what the pre order ratio for Xbone: PS4 is?
Westlakes! WOOT! I’ll be there among a sea of fedoras, K-Mart jeans and Asics shoes. I’ll be the guy looking down at his iPad with a peg on my nose.
I’d really like the JB at Bankstown to do a midnight launch. First midnight launch of anything I’ve wanted since I got a car and wouldn’t need to pay ridiculous amounts for a cab.
MacArthur Square, NSW???? Seriously?
Would have expected something in Sydney at least.
Lol, was also going “… seriously!?”
it’s all good. The QLD major one is on the Gold Coast and not in Brisbane
when I worked for them a few eons ago MacArthur Square was one of the busiest stores, I wouldn’t be surprised if the ‘official’ launch was a prize to be won by the stores with the most pre-orders in their state/region.
It’s great we get one BUT there is no need for the Capital A! We aren’t fancy like that out west. Macarthur Square will do just fine. Good Day to you sir.

You raised my hopes – and then dashed them immediately.
The list doesn’t show *just* midnight launches. It also shows the stores that are having an early opening.
For example, there are no stores in Perth doing a midnight launch (Only 1 in WA – Karratha). My local store is having an ‘Early Opening’ which says: Friday 22nd Nov 8am.
Woop.
EDIT: WOW, there are 4 stores in NT doing midnight launch – WTF is WA doing (Only 1 and it’s not in Perth)!?
There’s actually laws in WA preventing stores being open for Midnight Launches unfortunately. I believe Karratha is excluded from this because the local government has overridden their state laws.
Trading laws prevent them in the metro area, apparently…
What do you expect when 58.66% of the state’s population were against allowing shops to open until 9pm on weeknights and 61.39% against them opening on Sundays?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Australian_retail_trading_hours_referendum,_2005
Governments since then have been trying to loosen restrictions without making it too obvious they’re going against the referendum results, but I doubt they’re going to introduce special rules for video game console launches.
Why would something like that even go to a referendum? That was just asking for trouble, Australians always vote no on referendums.
Lets take it to the polls! Do you, Australia, always vote no?
Well, I was one of 40% who voted to loosen the regulations in that referendum.
One of the major entities campaigning for the “No” vote was the Retail Traders Association of WA. What they didn’t heavily publicise was that most members were smaller independent retailers who were not bound by the current regulations. So they were essentially arguing that the larger national and international chains should not be allowed to compete with them outside of the regulated shopping hours.
Prob cause of the halo2 riots in Perth midnight launch…..fight the power 😀
I ordered my Day One edition from the dashboard so I’ll have to wait till it gets delivered on launch day. However I will be picking up all of my launch titles and accessories at midnight 🙂
Rocking ham -_- not bunbury but that crap hole rocking ham. I wonder if any one will get mygged trying to get theres there….
Shout out to my ex-colleagues at Bathurst. I always do when these posts pop up, to remind myself how lucky I am that I don’t work for them any more.
Was it the customers or the staff that were that bad?
They pay full timers like $13 an hour it’s borderline criminal
Middle management. Interacting with customers I really enjoyed, especially the repeats who came back all the time – but only if you were working. I’ve identified my old store and am recognizable by my handle on these boards, so good on you, any EB people who were put onto this post and are “investigating”, good on you. Keep it up.
Believe me when I say that EB Games (at least, in my old area) are absolute C-words to work for. I don’t even shop there any more because of their treatment of an honest, hardworking employee who just wanted to talk about games and did their level best to sell as many of them as possible on their behalf.
Yeah. I work in retail too and I gotta say management is pathetic to say the least. The managers where I work are trained to spend as little as possible and maximize profits. So we are constantly understaffed and Christmas shifts are going to the young kids they hired as holiday casuals.
At least its good that you enjoyed ur customers, wish I could say the same lol
Oh man, that’s a very familiar story. I was unlucky in that I was there during the worst of the GFC … so I got totally done over. There’s plenty more that I could whine about but really, there’s no point. I’m just glad I’m out of there and working for a company which actually gives a shit about their workers.
Also reminds me to not go to Erina. There’s a guy who has been there forever (weird muscly looking guy) who gives terrible service. Should of been a cop they way he questions returns
JB Hifi have already called me and said the same thing (they will do a midnight launch as well). I think ill still wait till the morning anyway (although im betting most of the games will be sold …..
Errr… Woo Werribee!
When EB held the CoD: Ghosts launch, there were some 200 people lining up and it doesn’t help when that EB is STILL tiny! Now let’s see when they launch the Xbox One…
Massive list of stores. Luckily the store I pre-ordered at is at the top of the list. Airport West has got to be the worst Westfield in the world.
I finish work at 4am on the 22nd so I spose an 8am open at my local store will do me just fine.
