The Best Smash Bros. Mod Around Is Getting All Sorts Of New Stuff

The new Smash Bros will drop sometime in 2014. That’s a while from now. But why wait at all when you can play an awesome modded version of Super Smash Bros. Brawl that makes the game feel like new?

The trailer above is for the latest update for Project M, a mod for Brawl that makes the game more like Melee--which is to say, the mod makes it a faster, more technical game. This means that some moves have been changed or improved, yes. In addition to that, the cast has been tweaked to be more balanced — and that cast is expanded from what Brawl normally offers. Through this mod, you now can play as characters like Roy and Mewtwo. Or, you can put on a number of alternate costumes on characters. You can also enjoy playing on new stages.

You can do all that, without having to actually modify your hardware (or buy a new game). You just need a Wii, a copy of Brawl, and an SD card to download the mod to. You can find instructions on how to boot this up on your Wii here — though the newest version of Project M, which is showcased in the trailer, won’t be available until December 9. Obviously, you can still tinker around with the older version of the mod if you’d like!

Here’s a list of what the mod aims to add/accomplish, in case you’re curious:

A fast-paced game with flowing, natural movement where the player has a great degree of control over his character due to the technical skill that he’s achieved.

The balance of offence and defence changes depending on the exact matchup and playstyle, but overall tends to favour offence slightly.

Offstage edgeguarding is risky but rewarding, while on-stage edgeguarding is safer but less rewarding.

Recoveries generally require great skill to use, with the advantage usually being with the edgeguarding player, with some exceptions.

The combos are challenging and spontaneous, with anything longer than 2-3 hits requiring a knowledge of both characters’ options and some degree of prediction and/or a deep understanding of the mental aspect of the game.

As you might’ve guessed, this is a mod for those who play Smash kind of seriously.

And in case you wanted to see more of the new characters, check out these other two trailers… just remember, Mewtwo and Roy won’t be playable until 3.0 launches next month.
