The Kiki's Delivery Service Live-Action Movie Looks Horrible

Totally horrible. Awful. Rotten. The latest teaser trailer, which is the first to show footage, is bad.

The movie is a live-action adaptation of the book, which was adapted into a terrific anime by Studio Ghibli. The live-action movie is not connected to Ghibli. And no, Hollywood is not involved. This is a Japanese production.

As you can see in the above trailer, Kiki arrives at a bland, rundown Japanese primary school.

Ungh. These are buildings you can find all over today. Maybe they set the movie, I dunno, in the 1970s or late '60s? If so, this building would be new then. Not in tatters.

And then she has a delivery for some kids, who are wearing odd, old-timey clothes. They look like extras from The Sting. One of the kids looks to be holding an 8mm camera. But, the school is modern... ish? And so is the road, with that ugly concrete, next to it. That's the kind of construction you see after World War II.

Keep in mind, this is Kiki's house in the movie.

And Ghibli Kiki.

Granted, I haven't seen the final film, but so far, this movie looks awful. Maybe if I just listen to it?

Criticism on quality from a person who can't spell contemporary and likes staring at gifs of fans.....Okay........>.>...It does look pretty bland though.

Since when has a live action movie not looked horrible?

I think this deserves a little more time until full judgment is passed though.

      The Avengers

The Avengers had like 1000 times the budget though...

Yes and I don't think anyone ever referred to The Avengers as "live action" either. ;)

The Ghibli version will always be superior

Japanese live-action adaptions always look like student films and when Hollywood do live-action adaptions you can tell they threw the movie together to make money without any care or love for the source material.

It's not based off the Ghibli film, it's based off the book that the Ghibli film was also based off.

It's not likely to completely crib the aesthetic otherwise what would be the point.

I was tihnking the same thing particularly with that last picture complaining about how she's not a facsimile of the anime

The other irony is that the anime isn't that faithful to the novel. In fact Ghibli has a poor reputation of faithfulness of adapted material.
