Cliff Bleszinski, of Unreal and Gears of War fame, recently appeared on a podcast to talk about, well, the Oculus Rift, mostly. But he also dropped a few facts about his upcoming project which, as it turns out, will be a bit of a blast from the past.
Cliff, along with his wife, Lauren, were both guests on Kevin Pereira’s latest “Pointless” podcast, where the game designer was asked about his current plans. He said:
I have a pitch, I have concept art, I know pretty much what I wanna do. (…) It will be a PC experience that will harken back to a certain type of game that we cut our teeth on, if you know what I’m saying.
On the topic of genre, Bleszinski said he wanted to do a “proper” arena shooter:
A first-person shooter. It’s in my DNA. It’s one of those things – a lot of these kids playing Call of Duty, I don’t think they’d know what a proper arena shooter is if it’d hit them across the fucking head.
Later, he spoke about funding and the Oculus Rift in connection with his new game:
I want to get funding, I don’t want to do a Kickstarter. (…) With the speed and style of the title, it would not be a good fit for the Rift. I can confirm that.
Finally, Bleszinksi mentioned where his project is right now and how he plans to move forward:
I’ve shown [the project] to various parties, and there are nibbles (…) I wanna do something. It’s just I’m not gonna do it if the time is not right and if the funding’s not right.
So there you have it: a “proper” old-school arena shooter for the PC, a game which will see Bleszinksi return to his roots. If you want to listen for yourself, look for the bits at 21:10, 21:53, 28:59, and 76:15, respectively — but if you do, take care: there’s copious amounts of NSFW language. Oh, and check below for the four pieces of concept art Bleszinski’s recently revealed.

A proper arena shooter he says… So a 10 weapon loadout with insane weapons, no camping spots, no stupid grenade abuse, no iron sight aiming, unrealistic level design and fun non-military characters? If so… Then I’m in!
I’m with you.
If you want Q3:A so badly…… I’m pretty sure that game already exists. It’s called Q3:A…..
I want to see something that isn’t a military shooter or futuristic military dude-bro shooter. Yes, I would like to see something like Q3:A for the modern age. Nothing wrong with wanting to go back to a time where everything wasn’t some dark gritty military realistic style shooter.
Actually I was thinking about this when I saw these articles pop up – what if there was a game that just didn’t let you play as a sniper – no sniper rifles, no long range scopes – imagine BF4 with it, it would in theory have to force players to actually partake in objectives…..or would they just move their camping spot closer to the objective? hmmm….
i dont get peoples problem with campers. fps games generally are out to simulate real combat to some degree, and no person in their right mind would run out in massive gun fights with bullets all over. its a tactic, just get over it and deal with it.
I’m hoping this is a Q3:A or Unreal Tournament style multiplayer shooter made on the latest Unreal engine. or even a new Unreal game.
UT kind of took a step backward with UT3, but 2004? GOLD. Hell, even the original UT stands up pretty damn well.
2004 was the first PC game I bought. Absolutely loved it
UT 2K4 was absolutely amazing!
UT 2014?
Would this be Cliff “Fuck the PC, they’re not worth our time” Bleszinski?
yes
i love UT and Q3A games.
i have never been able to get in to the COD style multiplayer games, i want fast and completely over the top. games are for fun IMO
UT2004 was definitely the pinnacle of these games and i am definitely up for another
I’m more of a fan of the multiplayer in the original Unreal and the first UT. I can’t stand the later announcers voice.
I loved being able to choose which announcer voice you would use. Orgasmic was by far the best.
Whats going on with Fortnite?
