A new Xbox One system update will go live tonight at 8pm Eastern, Microsoft says. The update will address issues involving SmartGlass and multiplayer functionality, among other things.
Via Microsoft’s Major Nelson, here’s what’s coming:
- * Addresses SmartGlass issues for some users when coming in and out of connected standby
- * Addresses multiplayer issues for some users when re-joining games
- * Addresses issues with inconsistent notifications for some users
- * Addresses dashboard performance for some users
- * Offers improvements for Xbox One’s TV, system update, and content update services for scaling over time
- * Updated wireless networking driver to improve connectivity issues for some users
Microsoft says if you’re using the Xbox One “Instant On” feature, the console will automatically download the update when you turn it off and install it when you next turn the Xbox on. If you’re not using Instant On, the update will automatically download after Thursday.
This comes a week after widespread complaints about the Xbox One’s operating system and interface. Microsoft execs have promised that they’re listening to fan feedback on those issues. In today’s update, Major Nelson says more system improvements are coming over the next year or so.

i do miss the days of gen 6 and prior where what you get when you buy a console is consistent, and satisfactory performance for games and consoles straight out of the box…
i’ve always hated turning on a console after some time of inactivity due to other priorities, then being faced with a shitload of updates that would take so long, i’ve ran out of free time by the end of all the downloads…
*sigh*
Exactly! That was pretty much the point of owning a console vs gaming on a computer, that the console was switch on and play at any time.
I must have the greatest luck of all time with consoles, every console I have bought has worked perfectly without breakdowns. And my One hasn’t had the disc drive problem or the problems listed here.
Dashboard seems to run faster, but haven’t noticed anything else, wasn’t having most of these issues anyway.
Where’s my Dolby surround sound for my headset MS?
So I literally watched my One do this when I turned it off at 3:00am. I didn’t know this feature existed, but it’s pretty cool that it does. For those of you who don’t understand, the One icon flashes to indicate an up date. It’s very out of the way. Does anyone know if the PS4 has the same thing?
constant updates really are starting to bloody annoy me… the worst was just last night. I was BOOTED out of a single player game of Assassins Creed IV and then notified that the game needed an update… seriously.
it even affects handhelds.
if i go to play a game on vita that i havent touched for a while i will likely get booted and told to update.
as mentioned above some times i only have 20-30mins to play, when 10mins of that is updates i tend to not bother
