Morning all! Welcome to the ten-day count down to Christmas. @blaghman, are you recording a song for us? You’re cutting it a bit fine…
😛He threatened/promised he would do Last Christmas a few days ago.
Wait… so he’s a year behind, is that what you’re saying?
Morning all!
Ive been lurking around TAY for a little while, dipping my toes a bit from time to time, figured I’d just jump on in :o)
Did you consider the productivity impacts for your business and put alternate arrangements into place first? This place can get pretty demanding. 😛
Welcome! Tell us things about you… while we prepare the Oar of Thorns.
Also, we require all initiates to read the following information, and adjust their purchasing habits accordingly.
LOL
‘Tis the time for a productivity drop anyway :o)
Been fellow “Kotakian” for a little over 18 month and the community is great :o)
Figured I’d check out this TAY business :o)
Personally, I’m an adopted Melbournian , IT professional, avid gamer of too many years to count (I started on the Atari 2600 and C46, so that should give you a hint) and an MTG amateur :o)
Atari 2600 buddy o/
Welcome to TAY, there should soon be a delivery of ice cream, cake, drinks
and a paddlingYay!!!
Oh, wait a minute….. a paddling o.O
Prepare thine buttocks… For THE OAR OF THORNS!
Aww man
This is just like joining the Navy!
*drops trow*
Making a navy reference..That’s a paddlin’
I never got the Oar Of Thorns! This is like when I left school, the next year they got a whole room of PCs for computer class so 4 students didn’t have to share the same Amiga
The Oar of Thorns!
Forged at the exact point of Magnetic North, by orphaned Eskimo daemons! It’s shaft; fashioned from the bones of a white orca! It’s spike-d paddle; crafted from the mystic metals of an ancient meteorite!
To paddle a kayak with the sacred Oar, is to travel across seas at ungodly speeds, unfathomable by common man!
A buttocks, when struck by The Oar of Thorns, is said to erupt with blue flame! Bleed for eight years! Disrupt electrical signals and attract small metal objects, such as paperclips and safety-pins!
Those who handle The Oar are forever changed! Their tormented minds; scarred by the horrors they have known! Horrors that go untold for eternity! For a mere mumbling of such dreadful tales explodes the minds of those who hear them!
Beware The Oar of Thorns!
THE GODS, THEMSELVES, FEAR IT!
… then @rocketman lost it
The Oar is eternal.
The Oar may seek out a new host, but it is never lost.
If @rocketman no longer holds The Oar, it is the will of The Oar.
Traded it on eBay for Muse tickets
A buttocks, when struck by The Oar of Thorns, is said to erupt with blue flame! Bleed for eight years! Disrupt electrical signals and attract small metal objects, such as paperclips and safety-pins!
Oh maybe I did get it then, I had a vindaloo last week and I thought it was that
The Oar works in mysterious ways…
Some say The Oar of Thorns is compatible with all KitchenAid branded mixers…
This is simply not true.Official soundtrack can be found here:

Welcome.
Hey, I’ve seen you before! I remember because I love Wizz Fizz.
Oh Ive been around a while
Just havent jumped into the TAY pool until now :o)
Want some rye? Course ya do!
Watched the newest Hobbit movie. Didn’t take it as seriously as the first one, which I’m not sure is good or not.
Shhhh, Us plebs in the southern hemisphere don’t get it until Boxing Day so no spoilers please. >:D
Vader was Luke’s father all along.
Nooooooooooooooooooo.
Morning TAYbies. I had a really awesome day yesterday. Had church and it was the Sunday School anniversary. The kids did a really good job, and there were plenty of them in superhero costumes as Superheroes was the theme. After church was the last church lunch for the year, and the food was really good.
After lunch some of us guys stayed up there and played a game of LEGO Heroica. It’s a pretty awesome tabletop rpg with Lego minifigs and everything else. That lasted two and a half hours, and I came third out of seven.
After the game, we had a bbq with kebabs, hamburgers and sausages. Then we did our secret santa. We drew presents out of a hat, and the first three got our own presents, including me, so we swapped around. I got a harmonica and gave a cushion and a big packet of Nerds.
We then watched Lego Batman The Movie: DC Super Heroes Unite, continuing the superheroes theme. Then we went home, and my friend Trent gave me a Doctor Who colour change mug. To top it off, the Aussies are absolutely thumping the Poms!!!!! 😀
Upvote for the final point. Declare half a dozen overs before lunch, 400 odd lead and then 5 sessions to bowl them out on the WACA pitch. Should be an entertaining afternoon
I would be trying to score as quickly as possible before lunch. Both Watson and Smith are capable of lifting the run rate, and Bailey, Haddin and Johnson still to come. I’d be aiming for a lead of 450 to 500 if possible.
Play through to lunch (or even tea?) or declare before the session ends and have a crack at them for half a dozen overs? Or make sure you put on the 450 to ensure they can’t make it (on paper there battling lineup is better than ours)
Edit: Anything over 450 is a waste of time (Probably anything over 400 really). Better of saving the time to ensure they can’t stall and dredge out a draw.
Why is Chris writing Kotaku articles, likewise Junglist, is Mark dead? D=
While @markserrels is on Xmax leave, @chrisjager from Lifehacker (formerly of GamePro) is covering Kotaku during the week (this week anyway). And @junglist is also helping out on some days over the break. @lukehopewell and @alexkidman will also pop up at some point just to keep you on your toes.
Excellent. Cheers Danny!

Holidays.
Pfft. Worst!
He mentioned going on holidays last week, it might have been a cover I suppose
Pretty sure Mark is on leave until after New Years.
Probs dead, but.
Uneccesary.

Last week of work for the year! \o/ LET’S DO THIS
All these morning tv shows talking about now being “last minute Christmas shopping”. I haven’t even started the bulk of it yet. I suppose it is last minute when they start selling in October 😛
I think “Last Minute” is any still outstanding Christmas shopping not performed before Easter finishes, you know, just before Woolies etc put up their Christmas decorations again!
I can already buy hot cross buns, no joke.
I have two presents left to buy!
I brought mine 2 weeks ago, haven’t brought anyone else’s yet but
I have so much left to buy. D=
Oh, you don’t have to get me anything big!
See below 😛
Good gravy frame by frame pixel animation is tough. But fun!

That looks hella time consuming, but if you are having fun YAY
Rad.
Good morning tay, hope you are all well and good…
Getting ready to move is crap!
That is all
Hola Tay
I had a busy weekend, family & friend christmas shows saturday and sunday.
A monday morning question: What’s under the tree for you?
Bird poo mostly
Dirt mostly, some grass … maybe a leaf or two from the tree.
I don’t have a tree D:
Tree-less friend! o/
Yay, we can start a group!
I fit the requirement as well.
I’ll buy you a tree. But then what tree will I put it under?!
I’ll just have to put it under itself.
A second tree
Tree-ception?
PRESENTS. And shards of broken ornaments. And a big baby playpen all around it, preventing children from getting further access.
I am 98% certain there’s a cat calendar waiting for me under the tree.
Because there is one every year.
I have a pile of unopened cat calendars.
Little do you know they’ve all got personal messages directing you to your real present for that year inside.
Disappointment.
Nothing! Not yet anyway.
But eventually…SURPRISES!
My folks gave me something cool and expensive this year, so no bah humbugs from me. XD
PAX ’14 tickets
Morning all.
Finished Dishonored on Friday. It was pretty good. Now I just need to play through the DLC (I’ve already started Knife of Dunwell).
I also finished reading The Crippled God, the final book in the Malazan Book of the Fallen. I don’t know how to feel about that. It was an awesome book, probably the best in the series. The end was confusing (like most of the series), but good. There was some tragedy, but not too much. Heroic sacrifices and last stands abound and there were actually some happy endings, which is surprising given how grimdark and pessimistic the series is. So I loved it, but I’m also feeling sort of hollow inside because I’ve been reading this series on and off for the past six or so years, and now that it’s over… I don’t know. There’s a bunch of spin offs to the series, but I don’t know if I’m going to read them, at least not yet.
In other what I did this weekend news, my cousin and her kids stayed with us for the weekend, so that was pretty okay. It was my first time meeting my cousin’s step daughter, she’s about 9 and seemed pretty okay as well. They also had their dog with them, who stayed in the backyard with our two dogs, and the three of them seemed to get along great.
Dishonored was great, I really enjoyed Knife and Brigmore DLCs, wasn’t too keen on the challenge one though!
I finally watched all of Season 2 of Legend of Korra. Surely I’m not the only one that thinks the ending is really silly! Great series, but it feels like they kept building and building and when they were at the last couple of episodes they thought “Oh shit, we need to conclude this”.
Definition of deus ex machinama
yeah it was fucking stupid, close to EVA levels of WTFness. I enjoyed it but it was just like :/ mixed with 😮
Guess what I ended up buying at Kino when I went to the city on Sunday. =P
Artbook or The promise????
The Promise, the hardcover one =D
I just finished watching (re-watching) The Last Air Bender and Season 1 of Korra
Season 2 is my choice of after-work viewing this week
Apart from the ending, is the rest worth it?
Yes there is a flashback to the first avatar and its amazingly drawn and explains a lot of questions i wanted to have answered.
OH MY GOD! THAT DOUBLE EPISODE WAS PROBABLY MY FAVOURITE PART OF THE KORRA SERIES. SO DAMN GOOD!
It’s definitely worth watching. The whole build up and everything is really really good, It’s just the ending that’s a little disappointing.
Muse was amazing, Metric was amazing.
I dont think i could of seen two better live performers.
That’s because you haven’t seen me and my burlesque performance yet.
Soon.
I saw Muse in 2010, almost exactly 3 years ago. They were supported by Biffy Clyro, who are also pretty good live. Muse are amazing live, and their light show was brilliant. I wish I could have afforded to see them this time around.
Yeah you could have.
You could have travelled back in time and see Queen.
Good point.
Matt Bellamy is probably as close as you’ll ever get to seeing Freddie Mercury or Brian May though.
Brian is still performing, and I still hold out hope that he’ll come to Australia one day. Matt Bellamy is an amazing musician. Freddie is a better singer, and Brian is probably a slightly better guitarist, but Matt does both equally well, and plays the piano too.
Can I play the piano anymore?
Well of course you can!
Well I couldn’t before!
Oh, of course, I didn’t mean to imply that Matt was as good a singer as Freddie, that’s not true. I just meant that he’s the closest thing you’ll get at the moment.
I hadn’t thought that was what you were implying. You’re right that he’s the closest thing at the moment though.
If you know someone who has access to a time machine, let me know. I would kill to go back in time and see Queen. Watching the Live at Wembley DVD isn’t enough.
I’m still mad at you.
But I think with time and perhaps some gifts I could learn to love you again.
The Hives.
Seeing them in Danuary at BDO
Oh shit.
Prepare yourself.
I can coach you if necessary.
They are the bee’s knees live.
So I finally popped my World of Warcraft cherry on the weekend. It darn well took me long enough.
Morning humans, I’ve been trying out Antichamber for the first time
I think I’ve gotten to the point where I’m frustrated with the mechanics of the “Gun” now and I’ve given up on trying to find the rest of the pics as I head for the exit. I don’t think I’m doing this right 🙁It was pretty cool for the first few hours though, with lots of “whaaaaaaat?” moments and solving some of the puzzles with the colour blocks did make me feel quite clever.
which gun? theres a few & they each have slightly different mechanics…also, just explore. as far as i’m aware, there is no real goal to achieve. not even getting to the exit. its just about exploring & spazzing out at the trippy mechanics.
Well the ability that the yellow one gives, the ability to move blocks around with the middle mouse button but it doesn’t go the way I want, like stopping it before it gets to one of those dissolving walls was a big annoyance for me, half the time it works, other times it just doesn’t… when it comes to exploring I think I keep running in circles so I have no idea what I’ve checked and what I haven’tThere are still people out there who think heliocentrism is a myth.
yup.
Well, there are people who still think the Earth is flat, so…
Mate, if we were really orbiting the sun how come we don’t fly off the planet?
Elves hold our ankles on to the planet, duh.
I read that in a ridiculous Australian accent because of the “mate” at the start…even though we don’t have accents…
Just think, once technology advances to widespread space travel, those people will be ridiculed for the idiots that they are.
Or the first person who legitimately attempts to go into space (notwithstanding the epic 50 year NASA hoax) will hit the sky and shatter it, killing us all in the process.
#TinFoilLunacy
#TinFoilLunarSea
Better not tell China about that, since they already sent a robot to the moon.
Robots lie to further their own causes.
That everybody owns a helicopter is a myth
*copies word into dictionary.com*
Whaaa…
Surely it would be a lot more accurate to say that there are still people out there who say that heliocentrism is a myth because they don’t think.
Morning TAY. I had a great weekend.
Played lots of Halo 4, bought Super Smash Bros Brawl and played that heaps on Saturday, went to a mates place and played BF3, Killing Floor and Dead Island on PC on Sat night. Dead Island gave me a massive headache and i felt off after playing it? Anyone else get this?? Think it must be the motion blur or screen effects.
Played some more Halo 4 on Sunday and just relaxed at home. Went my churches Christmas production last night. It was incredible, absolutely blew me away. There is some ridiculously talented people in it.
Halo 4 is awesome.
XD
Shakespeare, it ain’t.
Some might argue that’s the best line ever written. Andrew Lincoln’s delivery was perfect. 😀
I laughed for a full minute.
Gilmore girls?
The Walking Dead. (TV series.)
My guess is The Walking Dead.
I don’t think anyone ever called Lorelai ‘Lori’ 😛
Man card retained \o/
Real men watch Gilmore Girls.
If you’re out on the rooooooad,
Feelin’ lonely and so coooooold…
Hi all. Monday, amirite?
Weekend was pretty short. Had some fun with dump trucks in GTA. Went to gf’s Christmas party which was pretty fun. Loaded up Guacamelee on Vita (with headphones) and played for a bit – totally amazing! Also Knytt Underground impressed me with the weirdness. Aaaaand then I loaded up Unit13 for about 10 mins, and it blew me away with the power of Vita! More people need one!

That’s okay. I think he can repost it when Page 6 comes along. In fact, I practically insist.
Also, I think we should shelve this formal complaint about a page six post being on page one until page seven.
Just slap a dadjokepagesix hashtag on it. then any page is fair game.
WTS – Summer Flu. Comes with an awesome headache, cold sweats, broken glass in your throat, and the inability to move 10 paces without wheezing. Now selling for the low low price of kill me now. :'(
@effluvium-boy totally stole my parrot, so it doesn’t surprise me that’d he’d inflict this on someone too! Also, uh, feel better too. I guess. 😛
so? YOU STOLE MY CAR
That was a teaching moment. You failed.
Can I rent it for a few work days?
Y’all had the spews, yet?
It’s going ’round so be on the lookout!
Day four of having a smart phone.
Still too scared to touch it. Still haven’t left the house with it. Took my old phone with me to the gym. Am I crazy or does everyone have this phase with their first smart phone? All over protective and the like? D:
Do you have a case for it?
Not yet, which is half the problem.
Any one have suggestions for best, most protective case for iPhone 5s? (Preferably one that looks aesthetically pleasing to the eye too. XD)
Otter box.
http://www.otterbox.com/
Thanks Red!
My iPod case is solid metal, I can almost hammer in nails with it.
That’s why my iPod classic is still going strong 6 years later!
This x 2.
Edit: My case is silicon, I think. I’ve dropped my iPhone a couple of times, and no damage done at all.
I get the thinnest/cheapest case I can find. Just to protect the back from minor scratches so I don’t have to carefully place the thing down like it’ll detonate or something.
My current one is yellow! 😀 (not an iphone though :P)
Don’t want to scratch the screen though. That’s my main concern.
How sharp are your fingers? :O
I’m thinking more pockets/back packs/wear and tear scratches rather than fingers. 😛
You can get a screen protector relatively easily- they’re made of plastic that’s thin enough to touch the screen through.
Honestly? My advice is just to go to one of those little stalls full of phone cases in malls and get one there. Rubber iPhone cases are so common and cheap and largely do what you need them to.
What Strange said! Just don’t put your keys in the same pocket as it and you’ll be fine!
Once you get your first tiny little scratch you’ll stop caring so much anyway 😛
Just don’t put it in the same pocket as your keys and change and you should be fine.
I’ve never had a case for any of my smartphones and mostly kept them in my pocket when going out. The only time I’ve scratched the screen was when I had it on the lounge next to me when sewing and dropped the pointy end of my applique scissors onto it. 😛
https://www.ebgames.com.au/any/any?q=iphone%205%20case
My smartphone cost $100 and I had a case and screen protector ready for it when I received it. I’m only moderately protective of it.
If I’d spent more than that, I suspect I’d be like you.
I got an iPhone 3G and then 4 and have never had a case for either
The 3G was perfect when I finished with it, and the 4 is still going strong
I kept it in a padded pocket in my bag until I realised the glass screen is a LOT tougher than it seems. Now I don’t give a toss. I do have it in a case, but that’s because it’s a wallet case that has my licence and stuff in it, which I wanted to start carrying in a front pocket and abandon my back pocket wallet. Before that I carried it naked in my pocket.
My wife never leaves hers out of the case. She switches between a wallet case (when out) and a tough rubber case (when at home).
Sounds like a case might be good just for peace of mind purposes.
Right now I’m in the phase where I’ll wash my hands before I even pick up the thing. I remember I used to do the same with my iPad and now I just throw it about. I’m sure this phase will pass. XD
You nurture and cherish the phone as if it were your immaculate conception. Then one day, in a sequence of wtf and why .. you make a rookie mistake and mis-hold your precious. You cry for approximately 48hrs , after which point you become numb to any further grief.
Crazy. The moment I got mine I took it everywhere with me and specifically avoided getting a case for it because they are chunky and ugly and no thanks my phone is beautiful. Then took it to a foreign country. And fell over and scraped it on the ground, because I was being an idiot.
Though a couple of weeks ago when the wrist strap broke, I suddenly became terrified of dropping it. Still gotta get a replacement…
Steve Jobs didn’t want people to use cases. He said that the back wear and tear was a bit like a person or something like that. It shows that they’re aging, because the back is getting scratched and losing it’s shinyness…yeah, get a case.
Assassin’s Creed IV might have sea shanties, but Assassin’s Creed 2 has this.
Oh god, I’d forgotten about him. I killed that guy a lot.
I intended to punch him in the face and was shocked to discover I had hidden blades equipped. XD
Shocked? I think you mean thrilled.
WARNING: Ezio did not kill civilians.
Minstrels shouldn’t count as civilians, they’re clearly hellspawn.
…when danger reared its ugly head, he bravely turned his tail and fled…
and there was much rejoicing
and fled what?
What did I do?
WHAT DID I DO?
But in revelations you were the minstrel.
Not as good as the chorus of the “give me money” women in AC1.
“Ahim poor an siick an ooongry!”
Because this was a reply fail post, I’m just gonna make an entirely forgettable and predictable obligatorylinkdrop and forget to apologise for it.

Off sick on Friday. Massive quantities of work fell in my lap. Of course. I hope I survive this week because I really, really need the two week break I have planned.
That article on Bitcoins on giz (well the cool infograph) was really cool and interesting. Its funny how it seems we are in another .com bubble. i wonder if this one will crash as hard as it did before?
One of the problems with Bitcoin is the lack of a regulator/proper traceability, which means that it can be easily used for illegal transactions. That’s the real trouble for “traditional” currencies.
My weekend:
Friday night: A friend of mine graduated uni. I met up with her and her friends at Newtown. A lot of my night was dominated by her gay friends drunkenly describing to me why they like particular types of guys (especially older hairy dudes). It was incredibly explicit and pretty hilarious.
Saturday day: Went to Flemington for Pho for lunch. Watched some cricket. Pulled down our Christmas tree decorations and fixed them up. Looks a million times better now 😀
Saturday night: Went with gf to have dinner with some friend of hers in Eastwood. They just talked whilst I focused on scoffing down as much hot chilli food as I could. I think I’ve decided that fried fish fillets in boiled oil and dried chilli flakes is the greatest thing ever.
Sunday day: Gf and I sat on our asses all day and just watched the second half of Attack on Titan series. Definitely the best action scenes in an anime I have ever seen. If they gave the characters a little more personality and not so many flash backs, this could be GOTY.
Sunday night: Took housemate to Ocean Foods and bought a pile of seafood and took it down to the water for her birthday. Pretty relaxed and chill.
Attack on Titan is funny, the action sequences are incredibly epic and bad ass, the characters fighting are just as badass. but they have weird filler that ruined a lot of its flow. However its easily one of the best animes i have watched in recent times. Not the same quality as death note, angel beats and Fullmetal Alchemist but it is gorgeous and seems to have a rich backstory that can be pretty easily expanded on. I think i really need to read the manga now 😛
Also @negativezero
Dude i have 2 weeks off anime sugestions??
The flow does seem a bit off. There are a few episodes in a row that are incredible non-stop action sequences that are just incredibly mind blowing. Stuff I honestly have never seen before. But then they cut to some sort of internal dialogue where a character isn’t sure what to do for 5- 10 minutes. Most anime are guilty of this but when an anime is going 100 miles an hour and then crawls to 5 miles an hour, it can be almost jarring and a little frustrating.
The pacing of Attack on Titan was awful. But it was also extremely typical of Production IG’s work. They’re very, very good at doing action and are fantastic animators but they often de-emphasise the other elements like characterization and especially pacing and sometimes have issues making stuff feel very factory-made and soulless. That can be a reflection of the material they’re adapting though. And while it’s poorly paced at times, those times are sporadic. Plus now that it’s done you can watch everything in a big chunk and the slower bits are less of a problem.
Somebody should just cut the series up into a 2 hour movie. Could be incredible.
What sort of stuff do you like / dislike and what sort of stuff do you want suggestions for?
A little over a month until Arcade Fire! A little under a month for Spike Jonze’s Her and 29th Birthday!
Should make the most of being 28. *refreshes TAY*
OOOOOLLLDDD!!!!
Yeah, man. So, so old. Could be worse. I hear @freezespreston has quite the milestone coming up in April. XD
I’m still hip.
except it’s now titanium?
just kidding man. its just over 2 months until I’m 29. at which point, 29 again becomes a young & hip age to be.
’85 bros!
there are so damn many of us. i think Shane, Chuloopa & Pez were all born in ’85 as well.
Im 21 next year, can I be cool?
You’re only 20? I assumed you were about my age.
If only I’d known, I would have totally treated you like a babby.
@shane: It’s not too late!
Sughly too!
I can confirm my ’85ness.
Me too.
That’s not old, I’m 38!
#OldManAliasAlpha
In a sense I’ve been an old man most of my life, I think I went from being a child to being a crotchety old man at about 15. Now that I think of it, that’s when I started to get grey hair too
I’ve got more grey hair by the day. The grey eye brows are bothering me too. XD
Mine is mostly in the temples & beard. Hell by the end of year 12 I had notable streaks along my temples, if I thought about it better I’d have claimed I was doing the goth streaky hair thing
lol, old.
#Ratchet
YOUR 29 FUCK
dude i dont mean to swoon but fuck you dont look it.
ALSO ARCADE FIRE FUCK YES
I think you need your eyes checked, Rockets. XD That Her movie by Spike Jonze has an OST composed by Arcade Fire too. All Arcade Fire, all of the time. (Though their score for The Box was crazy atmospheric but not very Arcade Fire-like.)
Yeah, I’m with the Rocketman. I thought you were like 23 or 24.
Oh, for real? Haha! Maybe it’s just me being emotionally stunted or something. XD
I thought you were about my age, but then I think that’s cause a good chunk of the Brisbane group are.
Morning all.
For the Melbourians (or anyone in the general Melbourne area, otherwise known as “Victoria”) there is a meet this @saturday.
Where: Optic Bar which is next to acmi in Federation square.
Why: Because @benny is in town!
When: Saturday the 21st!
What time should we meet up? Well, I’ll let you guys decide because 11am seems to always conflict with people.
What will we do? Meet up, and then head off to Ramen Ya \o/ If we can’t get in, there’s always Yoyogi’s.
Ramen Ya is behind the large GPO building near little Bourke street. =D It’s down a little laneway.
http://www.ramenya.com.au/
@tech_knight, @chuloopa, @tigerion, @jordi, @f4ction, @budgieishere, @beavwa, @greenius, @negative0.
This is all I can think of from the top of my head, help?
Just nominate a time and we’ll aim to be there by then, I think. Any time after 11 is fine by me but I wouldn’t want to eat until at least 12.
*Obligatory pop-up due to @saturday mention*
Hi scree! We haven’t talked in so long. That sucks.
Yeah, maybe we should steam chat one day?
Maybe, maybe.
I swear I will go back to australia just to talk to you and to meet @DC in person 😛
So wait, you don’t need to meet me, just talk to me?
Oh, you know what I mean. 😛 You make it sound as if I’ll spend over 5K on a ticket there just to send you a telegram.
Well, I’m in melbourne and DC is in Brisbane, how will you do that?
Magic. Ride a Moose. Hitchhike. You’re worrying about semantics, Scree!
Hype!
I’ll be up to meet up, been a while since we’ve spoken Scree 🙂
I’ll be working that day, so I won’t be there. Have fun though!
@benny – ugh Bens! 😛
Definite maybe! Should know before Saturday.
@pixel_the_ferret_viking
I should just assume you’re coming, right? You have to come to one eventually
lol sorry Scree, i am literally in the middle of moving and have absolutely no money to my name…
also why do you guys always pick weekends i work? XD
Seriously i am sorry
That’s it, I need your work schedule.
lol i shall email you my schedule for January…
we should be fully moved in in early January so i’m keen to do anything after that…
I promise to make more of an effort, it’s been very crazy lately (not in the good way) so i’ve been very lethargic and introverted which is not fair on you guys
Fair enough. I’ll try to organise something in Janurary for you.
I have an appointment at 1pm but I can meet up after for drinks etc everything else
So on top of feeling shit and having too much work to do today, I have also lost $20. This is one reason why I never carry cash, and I will punch the next person who questions this.
This is why I hate stores that don’t have eftpos. They are holding us back from having all electronic payment methods and doing away with these archaic concepts.
And then CommBank releases app update that supporst NFC payments but doesn’t support NFC devices.
genius.jpg
Why don’t you carry cash?
Come here, I have something for your face.
Is it cake? Man, @freezespreston gets all the luck
@freezepreston asked first, so if I asked, nothing would happen to me (because you said you’d punch the next person to question it)?
You’re not supposed to carry cash, you should just put it in your wallet or something.
@dkzeitgeist: Did you end up seeing Saving Mr. Banks while you were in the U.S.?
Totally gonna see it on Jan 9 when it opens here. That’s the manly thing to do, right?
I didn’t! It wasn’t out 🙁
There was a test screening at a Casino in Vegas but I was seeing Penn & Teller that night.
It looks so good. If you’re keen for some company I’d be keen to see it.
Hells yeah! Sounds good to me!
NegativeZero’s Uninteresting Adventures in Kantai Collection Update
I spent most of my game time over the weekend leveling up the Soryuu I picked up on Friday. As with Hiryuu I found that she’s pretty strong, but oddly enough if I put her in a team with my light carrier Hiyou, Hiyou would always get MVP. Not sure why. Anyway, got Soryuu to level 30 and remodeled to Soryuu-Kai. Now have 3 Fleet Carriers at level 30+.Continued running expeditions and doing daily practice matches. I’m finding that the practice matches don’t reward that much XP any more relative to how much my primary fleet needs to level up though. After much deliberation I settled on running with Hiei and Haruna as my battleship pair for my main fleet. Kirishima was higher level than Hiei, but I like Hiei more for some reason. Ditto Haruna vs Kongo. I wanted to run one higher-level and one lower-level Kongo-class. I got Kirishima and Hiei quite close together, and Haruna and Kongo close together a few days later, so the two ‘newer’ ones (‘newer’ because chronologically speaking, Kongo is actually the oldest ship in the game) were in the mid 20s and the older pair in the mid 30s recently, reflecting the order which I upgraded them to Kai. Hiei actually has a Kai-2 form but I probably won’t swap her over despite the stat buffs because the art for Hiei Kai-2 is fucking terrible. She looks like a monkey and they take away those badass cannons. 🙁
Anyway, I’ve been running Kitakami and Ooi together in most of my sorties and practice matches and having a pair of them feels unfair. I can understand why everyone seems to be rushing to get Kiso to 65 as well – if two torpedo cruisers is unfair, three of them will be game-breaking. A lot of practice matches recently have opened with the other team being 2-3 ships down after the air and torpedo phase. My Ooi has shot up to 28 and my Kitakami is now level 42, making her I think my 5th highest-level ship.
I managed to luck out when training up my Soryuu running 3-2 repeatedly, and finally got heavy cruiser Mogami to drop. Finally was able to do the Surigao Strait composition quest (Fusou, Yamashiro, Mogami, Shigure). Unlocked a battle quest where you needed to beat the 2-3 boss with those four in the fleet, basically a repeat of the last battleship to battleship naval battle in recorded history. I added Hiryuu and Kitakami to the fleet to balance it out, tipping the odds in my favour. Went straight to the boss first sortie and beat it easily, only to realize I forgot to select the quest. Took another 4 goes to get back there and almost lost Mogami on the second time, but managed it. Probably going to be the last time I use Fusou and Yamashiro unless they get a second Kai at some point, the other BBs outgun them and cost less to run.
Since I got Soryuu up to her Kai remodel I’ve started running stuff with her as my primary carrier instead of Hiryuu, and swapped over to focusing on leveling up Yuudachi to 55 to get her Kai-2 remodel. Currently she’s at 36, so 19 levels to go. Much slower to level up than a carrier because it’s rare to get MVP, but it’ll happen eventually. After that I will probably start working on Kiso or Shigure.
Also had a pass at 4-1 and it seems fairly doable. Didn’t make it to the boss and the cost for running a big fleet is significant enough that I didn’t want to waste too many resources on it. There are enemy submarines on the way to the boss as well, which seem like a pain. I guess the reason that you needed to clear 3-2 with Destroyers and that 4-1 is the next difficulty step up is so that you’re forced to have some high-level Destroyers and thus decent Anti-sub capabilities. If I’ve got some spare resources today I might have another pass at it as it would be nice to have cleared so I feel like I’m still making progress.
I may end up taking a break from everything for a few days, just running expeditions, so that I can try and boost up my resources in preparation for the upcoming events
@popdart5: FYI it seems like during the upcoming event they’ll have a ‘large ship building’ option where you can spend > 1000 of each resource for a chance at building Yamato. Might be worth it. They also said something about the new Aircraft Carrier Taiho being built through this system but I’m not sure if that’s right or if she’ll be an event drop. Apparently the character artist for Taiho is Humikane Shimada who is pretty popular in the anime designer world as one of the origins of the ‘mecha musume’ craze that KanColle is part of. He was the designer of Strike Witches and one of the main designers for Konami’s Busou Shinki toys as well. You can see a lot of influence from Strike Witches in KanColle I think.
Yeah I read a little bit of the chatter about the event. It would be nice to try and land Yamato or a Taiho but it’s probably going to be restricted by HQ level or something so I might not make it (only level 13 at the moment). It will be interesting to see how they do the crossover with the anime that I forget the name of. I hope they have some interesting enemies and what not.
Nicely done on getting everyone levelled. My highest is Hiei at 16 and I am this close to getting Chiyoda to her carrier remake. Also, agreed that Hiei Kai-2 art is woeful in comparison to other art and even her standard for that matter. I decided to swap out Yukikaze in my main for Kuma as the little destroyer just could not stand the beatings she was getting. So my main now has 1 CV, 1 BB, 2 CLs, 1 AV, and 1 CA and it is coping pretty well. I haven’t beaten 2-1 yet but I’m close. Funnily enough my second fleet is doing much better but it is such a drain to run (Fusou + Yamashiro + Akagi = freaking expensive).
I seem to have a thing where I construct doubles on carriers. Two carrier constructions and ended up with two Soryuus. I just need Hiryuu and that’s 1st Carrier Division done. I’m kinda surprised that you only just got Mogami as I’ve had her drop/build for me at least a few times.
I had some weird drop stuff going on. I took until I was deep into world 2 before I got Chiyoda or Chitose, and once I started getting them I couldn’t stop getting them, have had Chiyoda about 8 times now. Before that I thought I’d never get her. Have had many BBs now (Fusou & Yamashiro, plus the full Kongo set about 3 times over) but have never had a proper carrier drop. Mogami took this long and I haven’t gotten the other one of her class yet either. Have built I-168 about seven times but never I-58. Get every single non-rare destroyer repeatedly but never get Shiratsuyu. The only rare cruisers and destroyers I’ve gotten hold of have been Kitakami, Ooi, Makigumo, Yukikaze and Shimakaze. Literally the only gold-background ships I’ve gotten as drops have been Ise and Kongo-class BBs.
I’ve only managed to build a fleet carrier twice. Every other time I get light carriers, usually Chiyoda or Ryuujou but I have had multiples of every light carrier except Zuihou, who somehow avoids me every time. I should probably grind 3-1 to try and get Kaga as she drops there and I suspect I’ll have better luck that way than with building.
On the other hand I have really good luck with building aircraft with Hiryuu as my flagship. All my carriers are running Suisei dive bombers now and I have spares. My Hiryuu’s got a wing of Shiden Kai II fighters (rarest buildable fighters in the game) and a set of Ryuusei-Kai torpedo bombers as well. Akagi and Soryuu are running Zero Type-52s, Suiseis and Tenzans, all rares. Can’t for the life of me build any depth charges, turbines or AP shells for my BBs though.
RNG is a troll.
EDIT: For 2-1, I first cleared it using one light and one fleet carrier (Hiryuu and Shouhou), at least one of my BBs and then filled in the rest of the slots with heavy cruisers. Ashigara and Choukai were my mainstays for a bit there, then I moved to using Takao and Atago as well. I actually forgot this on my update – I got Atago to 25 and remodeled as well.
One thing to consider if you ever get one (I can’t stop them dropping 🙁 ) is to level up a Tone or Chikuma if you get them. They’re heavy cruisers but they have incredible line of sight stats so they will usually fire first.
I actually think I have both of them. I’m keeping track of all of my heavy cruisers that I’m getting as I have a tonne of the heavy cruiser composition quests.
I haven’t gone into item creation yet as it seems a lot of the decent stuff doesn’t unlock until at least level 20. When I get there I plan on kitting as many ships as I can. I’m trying to make Kitakami my boss ship with equipment and modernisation as she doesn’t get to her Kai-2 form until something like level 50.
I think I got a gold drop last night with one of the destroyers actually, can’t remember what it was though. My RNG luck is pretty all over the place particularly with BBs as I keep getting heavy cruisers out of the recipe 🙁 . If only I had better luck with the compass and actual combats as the last time I did 2-1 boss I just got wrecked in the opening wave of aircraft.
If you’re finding you’re getting whacked a lot by big hits, then you could try sparkling everyone. Run them each through 1-1 solo. 2 consecutive MVPs will make them sparkle and while in high morale like that they will hit harder and more accurately and have better dodging.
Against big carrier groups you can try putting an extra set of fighters in one of the carrier’s slots to improve your anti-air. Also the Diamond formation has boosted AA defense. Sometimes it’s better to last through the day phase and unleash hell on the night phase.
Secrets and Lies looks pretty interesting for an Australian TV show. Keen to give it a go.
If it doesn’t work out you can fall back on My Kitchen Rules next year
Fallback? I’ll be watching it either way 😛
It’s my secret shame of TV.
I’m determined to not watch it this year. Determined! It will not sink it’s tongs into me again.
Have you seen the ads with the awful twins though? You’ll be back.
Oh god they’re so bad.
Hated a few from last year (dat Asian pair D:) but was happy with the winners. They deserved it.
Racist.
Had to be said. XDDAN! WHAT WILL I GET MY BEST FRIEND FOR CHRISTMAS!? HELP!
Easy there, champ. No need to get in a huff. A Christmas present, huh? Why not some cotton chest coverings for that special someone in your life?
http://redbubble.com/people/dandkzeitgeist
Guaranteed to bring Christmas cheer and Yuletidings!
(Please, I need the money. I’m sick.)
I’ve listened to Zeitgeist and can confirm said sickness.
I’m pretty sure that if I got one of those for my best friend she would never speak to me again…
That’s the test.
You’re better off without her and the $25 you spent on the shirt.
Ha!
Where’s the meat write up? I was promised pictures! Of nipples and sausages and (german) cabbages and kings!
I’ve seen these nipples. They haunt me.
Well now I’m just offended. I put my heart and soul into that photo.
And nipples.
Just one.
Woah woah woah.. a meat with nipples that i wasn’t at??
What sorcery is this?!
Marriage? 😛
Here’s how it went
– we went to work
– it was boring but we put up Christmas decorations and earned those dolla dolla bills
– you bought lunch, I ate waffle fries
– NEW SLURPEE FLAVOUR
– there were other people
– we went to an arcade
– 13 people injured themselves in the Great Bumper Car Tragedy of 2013
– Powalen made people play a game that I don’t know what it is
– Beers and food were consumed
– Other drinks were consumed
– I fell asleep on a bus
You forgot the part where John Carmack.
Fittingly BF4 is my 4th BF
Fourth boyfriend? You man-whore.
Cant control myself
Hey there’s no need to shame, CJ. This is the 21st century, girlfriend. *does weird ’90s hand gesture*
Interesting bit of info on Obsidian’s plans for their next kickstarter
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/12/14/obsidians-bold-future-eternity-meets-skyrim-a-second-ks/
Nothing exactly announced, more like a statement of intent. Sounds kind of interesting though
I really wish they wouldn’t jump too much onto a second kickstarter when they haven’t yet delivered on their first one. By all means, plan for it and shop it around to publishers but you probably don’t want to be seen as being too greedy.
Yeah, I agree. I think the first Kickstarter needs to deliver proof that the money is well spent. Thought the same about Double Fine’s Massive Chalice before delivering Broken Age. Then again, more games more of the time. WOOOO!
Well that’s the sense I’m getting from it, its a plan so they can run a second kickstarter when development on pillars of eternity is winding down and staff are freeing up.
I’m all for original IP too. As much as I’d love to see an Obsidian led KotOR 3 or Fallout: New Vegas follow up, new worlds are cool too. If this Kickstarter model gives us new worlds than that’s a good thing!
But this is the other problem with the traditional dev model – earlier project resources aren’t needed later on so they either start the next project or go on holidays. At least with DOUBLE FINE (disclaimer: fanboy), they try to give as much transparency as possible about the resources being used, where that project is at, etc. I was more than happy to back Massive Chalice (disclaimer: fanboy) since it’s different resources being used in another part of the company – there’s no overlap or double dipping with DFA / Broken Age. Disclaimer: fanboy.
That makes complete sense to me, but even so… I feel like they’ve got to prove this thing is going to be polished and good before going again. I wouldn’t mind an overlap with Kickstarter two and three but I feel like one should be proof of concept, maybe?
Thing is, they’d need it the most during the early ‘break free from publishers’ stage since they don’t have that source of funding any more. Once the IP is on the market that they’ve created and own thanks to KS, there’s more tail income coming from those to smooth out the budget.
You’re making a lot of sense, Beavwa. THE VOICE OF REASON AND FISH MUGS.
Disclaimer: fanboy.
DOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUBBBLLEEEEEE FFIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNEEEE!
FWIW, InXile is running overlapping Kickstarters, and they justified it pretty well.
Pillars of Eternity’s tech is probably done by now, it’ll be mainly a case of building content. It’s 12 months away and also Obsidian’s other major project, South Park, is close to done as well. What that means is they’re going to have a lot of people idle pretty soon. If they don’t have a new major project (I wonder what happened to the Wheel of Time RPG they were supposed to be doing?) then a Kickstarter would be a good move IMO.
I’d be iffy about backing them a second time if it was a small studio that hadn’t made any other games (rather than being easily one of the best RPG developers in the world) or if I wasn’t happy with how their first kickstarter was looking, but Pillars looks absolutely rad and exactly what I was hoping it would be – new Black Isle-style isometric party-based RPG – so I don’t have any hesitation in saying I’d back a second project from them.
That was also true in 2012. I worry that we are going to get a Duke Nukem Forever situation agaIn.
There’s no way a south park game could be as immature and insulting as DNF turned out to be. I feel soiled for having gotten it as a present.
I wouldn’t mind seeing that engine used for an isometric Alpha Protocol sequel! I’d play that!
Hell yes, just what I was thinking when they mentioned AP in the article. Probably have to be a new IP since sega probably own it.
Yeah, Pillars of Eternity seems to be a rebranding of a Baldur’s Gate style dealy so a rebranding of Alpha Protocol would work for me too. (Might be even better to change the name though. Fresh start, no negative associations attached to name, etc.)
Yeah dropping the name makes sense since they’d avoid IP conflicts and also not be seen as a sequel to a poorly received game
Id be interested in a new, 100% offline ya bastards, Elder Scrolls
I have sunk a disturbingly large amount of hours into Skyrim already
Been trying to come up with interesting topics to talk about with you guys all morning…
I literally have nothing…
I’ve reached the conclusion i’m not a very interesting individual 😛
Same! Twins \o/
nothing-to-add-five o/
\o
…
Yup, nothing to add.
But you’re foreign! That makes you interesting by default!
(You’re also awesome, but mostly the foreign thing.)
There’s only so much i can draw on that card XD
Say Nuclear Vessels!
(That works with all accents, right? :P)
Nucleer Wessel \o/
*mental hug*
By now, there’s almost no white space left on it!
Ain’t that the truth XD
If you need some “interesting” conversations:
http://dankarlszeitgeist.podbean.com
Oh right. I have been doing something gamey recently.
I played Bioshock. It was all right. Some interesting ideas, some okay ideas, exploration was fun, way too much combat. Graphics were amazing for 2007.
A relatively sort-of-thorough playthrough got me 44 of 51 achievements.
Verdict: Worth the $6 I paid for it.
How amazing was the OST? Violins! VIOLINS!
Cohen’s Masterpiece is the best.
Entire score is pretty incredible. I love The Ocean on his Shoulders.
Infinite also had some incredible music. Elizabeth’s Theme in particular. Maybe for violin related reasons. Who can say?
Very minor Bioshock Infinite tid-bit
And the quartet singing God Only Knows! I sat there and listened to the entire thing hahaMe too! XD
Same with:
Fortunate Son later on in the game.I loved the Calliope ver of Girls just wanna have funWhat did you think of
The Would You Kindly reveal?I don’t know to be honest. I’d really want to playthrough a second time before I pass judgement on it.
I wasn’t particularly surprised by it, because I never really trusted Atlas anyway. The reveal itself led to some of the more frustrating gameplay though (the fetch quest, the decreasing health and randomised plasmids, for example). It did raise some interesting philosophical ideas regarding gamer autonomy and player agency that I appreciated.Kinda late to the party there Shane. Don’t worry, I won’t judge you if you won’t judge me for missing some pretty crucial last-gen stuff.
Hmmm… I’d rather judge. What did you miss?
Let’s get him!
Well if you must know, I never played any of the Mass Effect or Dragon Age stuff. I never played Enslaved (sorry @dc). I never really played any major games on the 360 or PS3 so if you can name it, I probably didn’t play it.
Hrmm, the others can wait, but Mass Effect is really worth it.
I think, of course, you mean Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls
No, I’d prefer to play games that are actually enjoyable.
Y’all got some Patty Hearst shit up in here.
Yeah I never played either of those. Clearly I am a pitiable heretic. 😛
And I thought we could be friends. I really did.
Oh man, that’s actually a cool predicament to be in at the end of a generation of gaming. So much stuff you can get for cheap. I recommend Heavy Rain, Uncharted, Beyond: Two Souls, Mass Effect…
Dragon Age seems like something you’d love too with the whole table top game stuff that seems to appeal to you. Also no better time with Inquisition on the horizon!
Have you played Red Dead Redemption, my friend?
I have/never had a last-gen console so I never played RDR. I know I missed out on a tonne of stuff and I know I should go back and visit it all but there’s so much new stuff.
To be honest, I saw a little bit of Dragon Age and thought it looked really really similar to the older Bioware stuff, particularly KOTOR, and the setting didn’t really inspire me particularly. I guess it’s the same thing with how I picked up Oblivion earlier this year and tried to get into it but the setting just bored me to tears.
I hated Oblivion and even though Dragon Age’s world is a bit generic it’s the writing and characters that elevate it. Talking to party members at the camp. Random banter while on missions, etc.
Alistair had me in tears so many times…
Alistair on Ferelden food:
Ah, so the last lamb you had was probably cooked Orlesian style. Food shouldn’t be frilly and pretentious like that. Now here in Ferelden, we do things right. We take our ingredients, throw them into the largest pot we can find, and cook them for as long as possible until everything is a uniform grey color. As soon as it looks completely bland and unappetizing, that’s when I know it’s done.
Random banter on missions and at camp were fantastic. Morrigan & Alistair’s constant bickering was great fun to spur on and Leliana’s campside talk of caramel pudding did funny things to me.
The party banter only got better in 2, having Varric, Isabella & Meryl in the same party is always a recipe for a chuckle and it was awesome seeing Aveline & Isabella eventually become friends but keep insulting each other so much.
Mass Effect never really grabbed me. I sure did love Dragon Age: Origins, though.
I’m the opposite. I think between us, we like Bioware 🙂
Well I love them both, so you’re just monsters! 😛
Weird.
I liked neither! 😀
I love both AND I love SWTOR as well!
Keep an eye on the origin store over the next few weeks, they seem to have finally grasped the infinite complexity of the idea that sales increase revenue. They also have a mass effect trilogy pack that would be absolutely worth buying (its 20% off now at $63 but might drop more)
Failing that, it’s almost inevitable that the first one will be $5-10 in the steam sale starting I think Friday. Dark Souls might be rather cheap as well and definitely worth buying if you’re the kind of person who likes a challenge. And by challenge I mean being beaten like a dog for the slightest mistake and enjoying every minute of it.
How great was the opening with the plane crash though and swimming to the lighthouse? Loved when the fuselage crashed into the hall way and it started flooding. That entire intro sequence was just genious… first time Rapture came into view, blinds were mown…
Same can be said for Infinite too, I reckon. So, so good. Infinite didn’t stay as amazing as the first game, alas. :'( Still loved it though.
… i never played it XD… something something my usual story of no funds poor me, something something 😛
The real problem with infinite was the fact that you ended up being the most violent psychopath in the entire place
Which does make a degree of sense given that it was all your fault but that’s hardly the pointIt was an archetypal example of a game marred by the major disconnect between the story and actions. Now that I think of it, it’s something like a game that alternated between levels, one being a charming and inventive platformer like Braid and the other being a playable version of Sam Pekinpah’s Salad Days
Now had the game moved & played a bit more like Dishonoured…
It was pretty cool. I’d already played that bit way back in 2009 when I first tried the game out, so it didn’t have the same impact. Also, I tried to break the game by swimming away and found only invisible walls, which might have damaged the immersion. But you’re right – the atmosphere in this one is very good.
So’s your face! >:|
One of my favourite previous gen games!
(It is previous-gen now, right? I don’t even know anymore. I just really dislike the term “next-gen” :P)
Just say “One of my favourite games”
There. I just fixed the generation gap.
Oh, I dunno… That’s a big call…
I’ll need a few hours to think about this.
You claim to have fixed the generation gap but a 70 year old marrying a 20 year old still sounds creepy to me
22 from the over. That’ll do mate, that’ll do
bwahahahahaha apparently Bailey figured that wouldn’t do. What a way to send them into the dressing room
And my last post was at 1:15 but I got a you are posting too quickly, slow down message.
They really don’t know TAY well 😛
I keep seeing it as TAY calling itself a drink and its way of telling you you’ve had enough, you just yell them down and order another TAY 😛
I got that error too earlier. I didn’t think it was possible for me to post fast enough to trip it from mobile.
JOB THINGS!
Anyone in Sydney, near Sydney or who just REALLY wants to commute to Sydney for some casual work should put their hand up and you too could share your lunch breaks with @Alexpants and me in luxurious North Sydney!
Feel free to tag anyone you think might be interested.
Stuff!
Can I put my hand up for the lunch part but not the job part?
And the getting paid part too.
Okay
You so kind.
What sort of work?
Watching ads and entering them into a database.
What kind of a jobwork?
See above
Maybe you two should just get jobs on this side of the bridge.
We have Mad Mex.
Maybe Mad Mex should come over to THIS side of the bridge!
Actually, the company may or may not be relocating to the CBD in the not-too-distant future.
North side 4 lyf.
*incomprehensible gang signs*
@trjn would totally need work
Sadly they have to start right now and I believe he’s off in Europe or some far off exotic location.
I’m about to visit the Disney castle!
Also moving to Dubbo in February, so that kinda makes taking a job in Sydney hard.
I haven’t nominated people for Community Kudos for a while because I realized I was just nominating my real life friends over and over again and I came to a realization that was weeeeeird.
It’s all right, I’m pretty sure Mark was just ignoring your noms by the end anyway 😛
:'(
I’ve never nominated anyone for kudos as far as I can recall.
Spoilered due to probably pretty unpopular opinion, open at own risk.
Sometimes because it’s kind of early cutoff on a Friday and I forget, but I also kinda dislike the way noms can be pretty insular to TAY at times. Don’t get me wrong, TAY people are generally rather awesome, but generic token noms for people “being awesome” or for not-related-to-kot.au reasons seem a bit odd? Maybe I’m just a bit of a dick 😀I like it when people I’ve never heard of before get nominated for awesome comments on non-TAY articles. I don’t think I read enough comments on non-TAY articles to actually be able to do this reliably myself, and I guess being a bit lazy helps as well.I feel like I used the word ‘awesome’ too many times above. lrn2vocabulary.I get the feeling Community Kudos days are numbered, based on the amount of noms recently. Maybe it’s for the best. Something that has outlived its purpose?
We’re all still waiting for Kudos Prizes 🙂
The prizes were a metaphor, Red. Look inside your heart and you’ll find the prize was there all along!
Aw, they said there’d be sandwiches.
Look… inside your heart (?).. and you’ll find there (not sure where I’m going with this) were sandwiches… all along?
But… but… no! My “obligatory Shane tag” is still my go-to claim to fame! 🙁
Both my noms this week were non-taybies \o/
I don’t tend to wander into other parts of Kotaku. But the reason I ended up in TAY was because of community kudos.
However, that being said I have nominated non-tay people especially when it’s for a particularly good comment. I have also nommed for anti-kudos for terrible comments too.
I have similar feelings about the whole process and don’t participate either.
I’ve barely nominated this year because I told Mark I’d try and only nominate for non-TAY related things and then ended up barely even having time for TAY let alone the rest of Kotaku.
I too am tired of the nomination circlejerk and try to only nominate for noteworthy reasons. People giving friends in TAY gifts and support is too much of an everyday thing to be really nomination worthy anymore and as much as I love the guys from Potaku I got really tired of them nominating each other for Potaku stuff all the time which is irrelevant to the Kotaku community. I prefer to nominate for well thought out comments, or super-hilarious ones. I have, however nominated for these non-reasons myself on occasion because nominating properly is sometimes too much effort. 😛
Strange said circle jerk. XD
I don’t nominate because I only made the noms=nominate association a couple weeks ago …..
You thought we were cannibals or sex fiends up till then, eh? 😛
Ha, it was almost like “are they trying to be cute with each other…? Is that a thing?” E.g. “omgosh ur so cute and amazing I’d just omnomnom you up”.
Yeah, I dunno what I was thinking. :\
Oh man, that’s a little creepy.
Yep. Which is why I didn’t think about it much afterwards and figured I’d eventually (and passively) find out the true meaning. 😛
Those 2 properties aren’t mutually exclusive, one could be both surely
Of course, and it hasn’t yet been proven that we don’t fit into either or both categories…
I would like to give my thanks to @aliasalpha and @pixel_the_ferret_viking for helping me with my GOG troubles. Now I can live in the glorious land of DRM-FREE!
i helped?
THIS WILL NOT DO
I’ll be right back
*runs out of door to find some old lady to trip over*
Glad it worked out for you mang,
Have fun with your free Fallouts and stuff XD
I really should restart Planescape…
With all the mods so it looks awesome
My reply seems to have vanished… The short version is “you’re welcome, buy heaps of stuff, things are cheap enough to take a punt on even if you don’t end up liking them”
Cook out 1st ball
Onya Harris!!!
Peach of a delivery. Cook has to wait a bit longer for his 8000th run in test cricket.
The Walking Dead season two week!
I’ve been marathoning the TV series for the past week and am almost done. Aiming to finish marathon just in time for first ep of season two!
Wooooo! Only two days until it drops. And I have permission from Mrs Shane to buy a season pass! 😀
Lie about the price and get Wolf Among Us at the same time! XD
sowing spousal discord?
tut tut DC.
Hey Gooky’s romance arcs can’t carry all the storylines on TAY.
I’m planning a drug based storyline by the end of the week
Well, to be more accurate, Friday is when I’ll be able to afford the dexamphetamines the psychiatrist prescribed me. It’s not as fancy as your usual drug based storylines but its all I’ve got.
Well with some artistic freedom you can ommit the “dex” from the name of the drugs and then it’s a much more interesting story XD
It’s what we do whenever someone mentions @mythamphetamine too.
Yeah but I’d just push it too far and before you know it I’d be wandering the streets of San Andreas & people would be calling me Trevor
I had a drug based storyline a few months ago. Zoloft in my case. Was exactly like The Wire except for being any thing like The Wire at all. *decisive nod*
Well mine might be combined with Agomelatine so it could get more interesting than I expect
GMG have a 25% off coupon running the last time I looked so that might be feasible
What did you think of (the tv show) Season 2?
Loved season two, weirdly. Enjoyed the extremely slow burn. Enjoyed the whole Shane/Rick arc and tension in the group. Liked the new characters. Really liking season three too, even though it’s incredibly flawed in some ways… Still think four is my favourite so far.
Up to episode 11 of season three, btw…
Season two was the highlight for me. The pacing really paid off in some great ways.
Really like Hershel too. He reminds me of my grandpa. Haha.
It’s not “weirdly”, Shane and I like season 2 so it can’t be weird! It’s everyone else that’s weird.
Loved how the season ended too with the:
camera pulling up to the horizon showing an ominous shot of the prison.More Castlevania: Lords of Shadow rambling.
-I kind of wish MercurySteam hadn’t called the goblins goblins. They don’t look like your traditional goblins, (My perception of a typical goblin is based on the Warcraft design) so why not give them a new name? Call them the Harfis or the Yawsill or something original. It would make the world seem a little less generic.

-The combat is getting more and more fun as I learn new combos.
-The light magic/shadow magic system is great. It gives a new depth of strategy to random battles.
-The “Penumbra of the Ice Titan” battle is every bit as bad as people say it is. Hold the “use” button when we say to. Repeat. Victory.
-The game’s presentation and camera angles are just beautiful. Did I already say that? I don’t care.
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=203789719
-The mount system is pretty much a gimmick. It seems the only reason the game let you use it is so you can overcome obstacles. The game gives you a SPIDER MOUNT, (woohoo) but there are no enemies to slaughter. It’s only purpose is for it to weave a web so you can walk across a gap. After which the game tells you to strangle it. What a missed opportunity. If I had it my way, you would have the spider mount for the whole game and you would become best friends and solve mysteries. Speaking of strangling, how do you strangle a giant spider anyway?
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=204173516
-I love the upgrade system. It feels like it’s a core part of the game, and not just a throwaway gimmick. Plus you can spend all your XP on concept art! I know that I should really be saving my XP for more powerful shadow magic but I don’t care!

My humble brag for the day
My grandad is extremely hard to buy a present for. like stupidly hard but i went full amazing this year.
My grandpas brother used to be the vice president of the Carlton Football club and my grandpa is always extremely proud of his brother and shows me pictures of him all the time and how he basically ran the club for a while in the late 50’s. I wanted to get my grandad a momento of that so i emailed the carlton football club to see if the had any prospectus for the years where my great uncle was there and they did. I got one, and found a photo of the clubmen and blew it up and had it framed. KNOCKED IT OUT OF THE FUCKING PARK
i just wanted to tell people because it took me ages and a bunch of emails to the club and i was really proud of myself and am totally looking forward to giving it to my grandad.
🙂
Props for effort right there
That’s rad as fuck. Solid gift, man.
So damn considerate. I would’ve just gotten a bowling ball.
Nicely done.
hey, PC master-racers. just a reminder that the Steam xmas sale is apparently due to start on Thursday.

Another sale? 🙁
Awww man
My bank account is anemic enough as it is!
So in the spur of the moment last night I bought Forza Horizon. I was wondering to myself why I hadn’t bought it when it first came out because I know it’s pretty much right up my alley (open world racing game that isn’t NFS. ie. doesn’t have police chases).
Then about half an hour later I remembered why I didn’t buy it originally. The entire soundtrack is made up of dub step :l Urghhh I wish I could just play TDU2 again instead.
(PS well aware TDU has cop chases but you actually have to go to some effort to get in one)
DONT BE HATING THE WUB MAN. THE WUB IS LIFE
WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB
I’m sooooo glad the dubstep fad has come and gone
I think I can guess how you woo the ladies
If I recall correctly there are three radio stations in the game. A dubstep one, an electro one and a rock one.
So I spent most of the day doing Pathfinder stuff because there’s no work to do. I ended up recreating the entire Twelve Labours of Hercules which will most likely murder my party but that’s all good. If they do well they’ll get brownie points, this time with actual brownies. 😀
I was planning to do a meat write up today, however work has been disastrous today. Also I now have a migraine with 1 hour to go work wise. I will try and write something tonight. depending on whether I pass out or not.
Hope you feel better!
They (no-one) said it couldn’t be done but I set out to prove them all wrong.
Over the weekend Black Dragon Kalameet and Gwyn the Lord Of Cinder fell before my level 1 might, joining every foe from the Asylum Demon to Manus: Father of the Abyss.

I’m going to the Disney castle!
I’M GOING TO THE MOTHERFUCKING DISNEY CASTLE!
Damn. I’ve always wanted to go to Neuschwanstein Castle.
Me too! I’ve been to Cinderella’s castle in Tokyo Disney, and it was 100% unimpressive. From the inside anyway. Outside was awesome, but inside, you couldn’t even go anywhere. Only had a few stained glass window type murals of various animated movies. One little walkway through the middle. I was very disappoint. I wanted to climb to the top!
Pretty sure the Disney ones have some trick perspective stuff going on. They’re no where near as big as they look up close!
They do. Don’t expect any wonder in the US* parks.
*ok, if you went to the US expecting wonder you’re setting yourself anyway. **
** actually, Disney World is the shit, and on average US has good theme parks.
I’ve been to all the U.S. Disney parks and felt wonder in each of them. XD
Paris is pretty cool too.
Geez man.. some hermit you turned out to be! You been more places than I have! 😉

#SURVIVORFINALE
Actual spoilers below, for reals.
Almost thought Monica might have tugged a few heart strings there for a second, but Tyson played the better game. Winning both those immunities was impressive (and necessary for him). And Gervase was never going to get votes. Voting one guy out does not a good game make. Or something like that.I liked Aras’ question. Not sure what Hayden was trying to achieve, kinda glad Monica shut him down. If I was Ciera I would’ve asked Monica if she did vote for Gervase or not…Starts on TV in half an arr!
If you live on the eastern side of the country…
FINALE AND REUNION SPOILERS
I agree! So glad Tyson won 😀 and I was getting kinda worried Monica might actually win (or get close) and every time I watch a season I really hope the jury vote for the person they think played the best game and is most deserving, and not just NOT vote for people out of spite (bit disappointed that Vytas did this). Aras’ jury question was good and even though it’s a common question he worded it well and I hate how a lot of the time there’s jury questions that feel like such a waste :P. Interesting to see the spoilers I saw weeks ago were true and confirmed the final three :/. As for Season 28 I was getting excited to discuss what the teaser could mean but then he showed it and it was super obvious and pretty lame IMO. I feel like the season won’t be that great but we’ll at least have a “fan favourite” emerge@powalen @sughly @strange
Agreed re Season 28. At least it’ll be an entirely new cast (I hope…). It may just end up like One World or something, realise it’s all one sided/crashing and mix it up.The spoilers I stumbled across months ago seemed to indicate it’ll be all new people. It seems highly likely since a majority of the past few seasons have had returning playersSuper spoilers for the winner
UGH, I did not want Tyson to win 😛 It’s not that I hated him, I just really hated that nobody voted him out! Monica, I’m sorry, but you are so stupid. How could she convince herself that voting with those two (especially Tyson) would be a good move at all. I don’t understand 😛 It’s so disappointing because she doesn’t seem like a stupid person, but how she ever thought she could beat Tyson without making any sort of move for herself is just silly.Same for Gervase. Did he really think that he would beat Tyson? I was half expecting that he would flip on Tyson at the end (I suppose he might have if Tyson didn’t win two immunities). Totally saw Tyson’s move to give Gervase the immunity necklace though, it was a pretty obvious move (and why Monica didn’t go nuts over the guys breaking her trust, I don’t know :P). Monica was SO adamant that Tina needed to go at the vote, but then voted for Ciera anyway? I don’t know 😛
Rewinding a bit, I was very happy that Tina won her challenge. I did NOT expect that! Especially because Laura was such a gun. I was pulliung for Tina to win, but alas.
Anyway, I’ll see you guys next season!
Ugh, forgot tags again 😛 @strange @greenius @sughly
Gervase did mention that he was always thinking about getting rid of Tyson, but that if he did he would be next. Which actually would have been true. I kinda believe him too.Had an extremely long and unproductive day out, dragging along two mischievous kids with me.
But when I arrived home my Secret SanTAY made my day: https://twitter.com/Strangist/status/412485650164617216/photo/1
Thanks, Secret SanTAY…I love it. 😀
Wow, that’s AWESOME. I know I made out well in this Secret SanTAY business too, but I’m jealous! 😛
Should have come into the city and had lunch with me. No one wanted to 🙁
I was in the city! DC told me you were there but my kids were being too much to inflict on anyone. 🙁
I had a child with me as well.
Hey everyone
Thanks to whomever was my Secret SanTAY, it turned up today, I am shit and am yet to get anything for mine BUT THIS WILL BE RECTIFIED!
Heh, rectum 😉
Love and kisses, Spaghtt
What’d you get?!!!
Also, I fear for your recipient of the “rectified” present now…. 😛
I got a Chow Yun Fat DVD
This is the first time I’ve ever been involved in anything like this, so I’d like to try my best 😀
Chow Yun Fat is The Man! 😀
Hard Boiled, The Killer, A Better Tomorrow, and City on Fire are all awesome.
Well, the YouTube semi-boycott hasn’t been going so well… There are a few (like 5%) channels that I am subscribed to on YouTube that have dailymotion accounts. However, the dailymotion channels are completely behind schedule. And no wonder. The dailymotion videos get 3% the number of views. Why bother updating a channel that nobody watches? I think I may have to cancel this semi-boycott. Google has won. I don’t have the willpower to fight them. Anyone else that has tried a similar boyott will fall back into line, just like me. YouTube will be uncontested in it’s monopoly. Now I am depressed.
I hate to say it (okay no I don’t) but it just enforces my view that building a successful enterprise that 100% completely rides on the back of another successful enterprise is a terrible idea. Not just youtube ‘personalities’, but people who 100% rely on Facebook, both ‘businesses’ that do all their business through their Facebook page, or big companies like Zynga who for too long solely relied on the success of Facebook.
It’s never been, isn’t, and never will be a good idea, and if nobody could come up with a decent backup plan, well it’s their problem.
(PS I’m well aware that this is no doubt an extremely unpopular view, but the internet is a very volatile place. It moves. Quickly. Keep up or tough luck.)
Edit: This comment is pretty much uninformed and not worth paying attention to.
I don’t really get it.
People use company A’s free service for their livelihood, and complain when company A change the rules? Okay, it might be a dick move, but they can do whatever the hell they want – it’s a free service, no?
If you’re not cool with that, set up your own video hosting infrastructure? Your content doesn’t generate enough to be able to do that? Maybe you should rethink your livelihood. I can’t get away surviving off the money I make posting unpopular opinions on the net, so I have another job.
(nota bene: the ‘you’ in the above is not directed at *you*, @phlanispo, it’s the more general use of the word.)
I’d give you $5 for that opinion.
Except it’s not really like that at all. They set it up so that it was possible for people to earn the money generated from advertising revenue. But then because their [arbitrary but extensive length of time]-long video about a game at one point has a ten second loading screen which features a song that, while used in the game, is being detected by the googlebots as belonging to some random guy who had nothing to do with the game, ONE HUNDRED PERCENT of the money earnt by that video goes to that guy. Instead of the one who actually put all the hours and hours and hours of work into creating the video, he gets left with nothing at all.
I don’t really get how anyone could stand by that kind of action.
Yep, the situation you outline seems way less just than the picture I was painting – I should research things properly before going off on a rant.
Thanks for taking the time to highlight the more important issues for me.
That’s ok, I’m sure I’m painting a rather incomplete picture too 😛
The whole thing seems to stink to high heaven though. Really can’t stand Google at all.
How can you say that? Their corporate motto is “Don’t Be Evil”. Sure it could use some work, the fist 4 letters have fallen off but other than that its all good.
I always thought it was a clever ruse.
That’s a lie. I never thought it was clever.
Google are kind of at the Dr Venture level at the moment: http://youtu.be/D8aBP-JOZsU
One bit I’d like to add to that is that it’s more of a symbiotic relationship – those piggybacking off the service increase traffic and revenue, which is win win. Changing rules and dicking the other half around is just shooting yourself in the foot.
Oh, almost forgot about it(probably due to too much embarrassed laughing at the time), but my son was officially the weirdest kid at the Library today. He was conversing with another kid and for some reason felt compelled to say “I have veins in my penis!”. Even worse, the kid didn’t hear and asked him to repeat it so he then yelled it. D:
Ok, so which of you hot bodied hornbags has Bravely Default? My copy just arrived and no SOB in my 3DS friends list is sexy enough to have bothered with it.

…and i’ll add myself to the TAY list, seeing as I obviously haven’t been paying attention. :/
I suppose I should add myself to the list at some point. But I get the feeling that there will be some sort of ritual first, probably featuring dark souls and some kali ma stuff.
Nothing like that.
Just the oar.
And me. I want to finish LBW first before I start though.
It’s funny, wasn’t gonna get LBW because of this, then did, and flogged it in a few days 😀
Well I added a heap of you, now just waiting on the return add…

Also going to add myself to that TAY list thingo.
Are you Ash?
nope
I gots it. Add me from TAY list.
Hi guys,
I had a very good media consumption week last week. I watched a bunch of movies and played some games. Much better than my usual days which are just spent staring at my computer wondering what to do. Now that I think back, maybe it was because I had a few days off in between the week. Usually I’m just really tired since the daytime heat makes it uncomfortable to sleep after a night shift
Movies Watched:
Django Unchained – It was good. A lot of exaggerated blood splatter and language. Movie felt a bit too long though but I was engaged for most of it. I liked the Django theme too.
Monsters University – I don’t remember a lot about Monsters Inc but I think it is one of my lower ranked Pixar movies so I wasn’t expecting much from Monsters University. The movie was OK. It looked good there were some nice lighting effects and it was nice seeing Mike and Sulley’s early interactions even if the story was kind of typical.
Despicable Me 2 – Really enjoyed this one. A good new set of characters and the minions up to their usual silliness. Also I liked Grue’s interactions with his 3 kids. I never like it when movies focus too much on the cuteness of kids but here the kids did their own thing but were also part of the story.
Games (more like a game really):
I played and finished WARP. A small game about a teleporting alien trying to escape a research lab. Like the title suggests your character can warp from one area to another. The game is played on a top down perspective – more of an angled 3D view- which allows you to see your next teleporting location. You progress through the game solving puzzles and dispatching enemies. The game looks cute at first but it gets violent with your character gaining the ability to warp into enemies and blow them up. The violence is cartoonish though and I enjoyed seeing the blood spatter and how the enemies reacted to it e.g. if there are two enemies in a room, you can kill one enemy and the other one will be covered in his companions blood and will run and hide. The game has 3 endings tied to how many guys you killed and I got the worst which was particularly gruesome.
The game does take its time to unlock new abilities though. You spend much of the first half of the game with your basic teleport ability. Later on you have the ability to swap between objects- i.e you switch places with the object you teleport into – essential for puzzle solving later in the game.
Another problem with the game is the loading between deaths. It’s only a few seconds long but I would have preferred an instant restart. There were some serious frame rates drops too later in the game – the game was back to normal after a few restarts but some of the later levels are timing based which is not the best when the game is stuttering.
Overall it was a fun little game. Teleporting is one of my favourite super powers so it was fun to do so in a game. I always liked choosing teleporting characters in games like X-men legends and Marvel Ultimate Alliance.
TV – I’m still watching my usual weekly shows. I started Almost Human and I’m enjoying it. Seems very procedural so far with a very limited overarching plot. It’s still fun seeing the interaction between the main character and his android. Michael Ealy looks great as the android Dorian. It must be a combination of his performance and the special effects because his face looks the part of an android that is supposed to be as human as possible. Good show it will be interesting to see how it develops. I really hope to see more futuristic crimes, so far they are just the typical stuff you see in crime dramas replaced with robots and fancy looking gadgets.
The meat over the weekend was fun. It was nice seeing everybody again and meeting Stevo. @alexpants and @rocketman complemented me on my dumb twitter pics, Thanks for the kind words guys.
We also met some new people there at the bar. I felt they came on a bit too strong, talking excitedly and being hyper. I’m thinking they were just nervous. One or two of them showed interest in joining TAY so hopefully they do so.
Plans for this week:
Play Crysis 2- I’ve just played a few hours but the game seems interesting so far. I haven’t unlocked many abilities but it’s fun switching between amour and stealth abilities. The on-screen effects of your suit abilities are great too. A series of silver hexagons covers the sides of your screen when you have your armour ability on or your character tuning invisible but you can still see your gun’s outline when you’re in stealth mode. Story seems unimportant so far but it’s fun engageing the enemies in somewhat large areas.
Watch Devious maids. This is such a Marc Cherry TV show, wIth exaggerated acting and plots. I enjoyed Desperate Housewives (before it became too long) and this one seems to be a similar show but with hispanic maids. First 2 episodes have been good so far.
Finally, maybe I’ll watch Dredd. I like Karl Urban’s look in Almost Human and that made me remember that I had a downloaded copy of Dredd I hadn’t watched.
MASTERS OF SEX SEASON FINALE THIS WEEK TOO!!!
I’m working most days this week so hopefully I can achieve some of these plans.
Dredd! You chose… wisely. I’ve stopped watching Almost Human. Wasn’t what I was looking for in my scifi TV alas. Was hoping for a Fringe replacement to be honest. Found that in Sleepy Hollow instead, so I’m happy. 😀
Man, you guys met strangers at the bar? Weird. At Mrs. Freeze’s birthday party strangers sat next to us for a bit and then I think we wierded them out because they all moved. XD
You need to come to a Melbourne meat. We’ve scared off entire floors of customers =D
Yeah Almost Human seems OK, it might not have much staying power with me either but I’m enjoying it for now. Like I mentioned above I’d like more sci- fi elements.
What do you look for in your sci fi Tv?
I have all 5 Fringe seasons downloaded but I’ll save them for later.
I like a strong arc and chemistry between the characters, mostly. I guess I look for this in any show though. 😀 Technology that serves the plot rather than being look at all this CGI, etc.
When did you give up? I’m about to watch the 5th episode. There appears to be a strong arc being built upon with every episode and the chemistry between the two leads is developing nicely.
Stopped after the first two. Also found the show a little bland. All this cool potential that they could’ve elaborated on but never did. I’m not writing it off, though. Just not a priority at the moment. 😀 For full disclosure, I did the same with Fringe initially… went back to it… now it’s one of my all-time favourites.
Fringe. Do it.
I’m really liking Almost Human. Vague premise spoilers within:
The developing relationship between the android with feelings and the android-distrusting human who’s shut off his feelings is very believable.Yeah, their relationship seems believable so far.
Some of the interactions between the two characters have been changing between episodes – one episode they are chummy and the next there is tension. I didn’t realise why this was happening until i read that the episodes are numbered 1-5 but they are actually out of order http://sciencefiction.com/2013/12/13/almost-human-airs-order-sign-cancellation/Interestingly, this didn’t bother me because in my mind it’s as if John (Karl Urban) sometimes forgets that Dorian is an android. You know? Like how one can sometimes have an actual adult conversation with a child but then the child does something that makes you realise, ‘wait a minute you’re a child.’
🙂
Oh wow…that doesn’t bode well. It’s interesting the guy saying that after episode 7 they really should be in order, it means that DC’s “strong arc” really is there. 🙂
Whenever I see anyone mention that I end up thinking it’s that show that I watched until I remember that one was actually called Being Human.
The best nanosuit upgrade you can buy is the one that lets you shoot while cloaked. Not much, it still takes a hell of a chunk of your power for each shot so at most you get 2-3 before the cloak drops but with that, an assault rifle on single fire and a suppressor you can ninja entire sections of the game. Speccing for maximum stealth, headshotting guys, using your remaining cloak power to get into a bush or something and letting it recover while the enemy run around paranoid & confused and it really feels like a really different type of game
If you play stealthily enough you don’t even need the shoot-while-cloaked upgrade. I used to just stay far away, stay cloaked, then quickly uncloak for a split second, take my shot then re-cloak. Worked a charm. Mind you in an actual firefight I was pretty dreadful cause I always try to carry a sniper rifle with me whenever possible :3 All depends on playstyle though I guess.
WHY THE F*** ARE ALL MY COMMENTS GOING INTO GODDAMN MODERATION?!?!?!
Edit #2: apparently editing my comment took it out of moderation?! I don’t even know what’s going on anymore.
Nice, I’ll consider that route when i get more upgrade points – take out a few guys come out of hiding then run and gun to the next checkpoint.
I might upgrade the armour and speed parts first though since it suits my playstyle. I always try stealth but I just get bored and I end up in a gunfight. 🙂
Later down the line the story gets all kinds of convoluted if I remember correctly.
Also something to remember: The enemies have so much health at the end that the only way to kill them is to run up to them and hit them until either you or they die.
Oh man, I hope the difficulty doesn’t get too frustrating. I’m liking the momentum I have finishing games at the moment. I’m playing on the default difficulty though so hopefully it’s not too bad.
Edit: spelling. I wrote the as ‘e’
Upvote for Django. I’m not one for hype (and I’m not even sure it was hyped) but that was a decently good movie. Not great, not amazing, not omgosh-wow-can’t-beleive-u-did-dat, but just pleasantly good.
Agreed with your thoughts on length, but it’s to be expected with a Tarantino flick.
Yeah I felt the same way. Pleasantly good is a fitting description
Tarantino’s cameo was so dumb (in a good way) I like how he died.I like it when Masha does stuff 🙂
🙂
One thing I love about season three of The Walking Dead:
The misinformation on both sides. Andrea can only work with the information she has and the perspective of Rick’s group from inside Woodbury is pretty damn altered from reality. People of Woodbury also are blissfully ignorant of why they’d be attacked in the first place. Then Rick’s group has only what Michonne gave them. (Not to mention Glenn and Maggie.) This perspective is far more accurate to what’s really going down, but it’s still not entirely precise.
Same deal with Michonne and Andrea’s relationship and Michonne’s relationship with Rick’s group in general. Cause she keeps her cards close to her chest they’ve got this warped perspective of her.
Feels realistic and I like this element of a storyline that can otherwise be way too over the top at times.
Up to episode thirteen, btw. No spoilers beyond here please!
Oh man, this reads like nonsensical rambling. XD
Michonne is Mums favourite character. Likes her better then the rest of the cast
I like her too. I would say Carol’s my favourite, especially whenever she shares any scene with Daryl. Also love Dale and Hershel. The voice of reason in the group. I like that Rick’s a screw up and not necessarily great leadership material too. He’s flawed and tries his best but it often backfires. Then there’s Glenn. Really like Glenn. And…
I’m going to name the entire ensemble. I’ll stop now. XD
One thing that surprises me, though? Andrea. Really like her. Carl too.
Corrrlll
All these memes I’ve been looking out for, I honestly don’t even recall Rick or Lori saying Carl was in the house at all. Where did that come from? If they said it, couldn’t have been often. *scratches head*
Rick tells Carl to stay in the house (Hershels house) after he was injured. Pretty much everything Rick said Carl ignored and then Dale died because of Carl’s stupidityCarl is just a kid who doesn’t know better. A kid who wants to be like his dad and Shane, even though he lacks the maturity to do it. He’s also the perspective of how damaging a world like this can be on someone who is forced to grow up in it. A glimpse of things to come. I think Rick sees this in the kid in season four and actively tries to stop it. I like that Rick gives Carl’s advice weight too. (Like when he implied Machonne was one of them, etc.)@dc
That’s true. A lot of people can see that he’s struggling. I think he matured a lot during season 4 so far thoughI think it might’ve helped that I saw season four before the rest of the seasons too. Knew there was hope for this kid. XD@dc
I think so.
Season two he was a little shit and he still has aspects of that in season 3That’s strange because
most people hate Andrea and Carl. My opinion of Carl changes all the time but I did not like Andrea.I also really like Glenn. After all he was the only one in the telltale game. I do like Rick. He tries to do his best but doesn’t seem to forget he’s human and humans make mistakes
I think Andrea is a screw up plain and simple. You can see her arc develop that way ever since Amy died and that stuff with Dale at the CDC. After the suicide attempt (if you can call it that…) I think she saw herself as weak and wanted to prove herself. Think that’s why she gravitates towards screwed up characters like Shane and the Governor too. She knows what it’s like to be the outcast or damaged goods, can take a certain comfort in seeing that in others too.
Also I think Woodbury makes sense because it gave her something resembling a normal life again. Only reason she pressed on after CDC was because Dale made her and this place seemed to be something to live for. I can understand her motivations entirely. She is flawed. She does make stupid decisions. Feels like its by design though and a character trait rather than bad writing.
I often find myself very sympathetic to damaged characters like this, possibly because I see a little of myself in them. XD
I just thought she was a bit of a bitch. =P
Haha! I think Lori could be a bit of a bitch to her at times, though. That stuff in Hershel’s house about her not pulling her weight even though she was on lookout and doing what the guys were doing. She also was one of the first people to stand up to Carol’s abusive husband!@dc
Lori wasn’t a bitch, she was just a terrible mother =Pl’il ass kicker is better off with Daryl.
Also, thanks Scree! I didn’t expect to be having much Walking Dead conversation about old seasons since everyone had moved on but it’s good that I get this chance. You’re awesome! 😀
@dc
I’m sorry?
I’m buying Mum the box set. Gametraders gave me a discount and let me pay it off ^^ So I was pretty lucky. Been using my left over money on it.
I really disliked Andrea
Not only was she useless but she actively puts people in danger. Towards the end she started to be a little useful but then countered that with utter stupidity. One thing that bothers me though:
Rick is becoming Shane, the very thing he didn’t want to become. He’s cold and callous and doesn’t give any weight to people who aren’t his own. Kind of lost a bit of his humanity. D:Yes, that’s true but he comes back from it. He sees himself turning into Shane and comes back from it. You know this already because season 4.Yeah, which is why I still like the guy. XD
I think Shane wasn’t entirely bad though. He had good survival instincts that were pretty extreme, but also somewhat reasonable given the circumstances. Rick just chose the higher ground which I liked.I think Shane gave himself a warped view of what was important. To him, going back to how it was before Rick woke up seemed to be the most important thing. Having Carl, Lori and him as a family and he was trying to protect that but in doing so put everyone else in dangerI couldn’t help it, okay! There was no reason why they had to kill me for it 🙁He was pretty much another version of The Governor. His for crulty got given an excuse come to the surface under the guise of survival. Basically he as a prick and the end of the world gave him the excuse to be more of a prick without forcing to confront that aspect of himself when he was convinced he was a good person.Imo.
Season three Walking Dead (safe for DC to read!)
That’s true, didn’t really think about that that much. The only reason I say I didn’t like the last half of season three is because I really hated the way the Governor was characterised (we can talk about this more when you’re finished I suppose :P)Also RE: Carl from your conversation above, the reason I don’t like him is because he’s stupid 😛 I don’t know, it just didn’t seem at all believable to me for a kid to be that bratty when his and everyones lives are at stake. But, I suppose I was the goodie two shoes kid so I can’t relate very well haha
Yeah, I really dislike The Governor. Over the top character served by over the top writing. Doesn’t mesh with the otherwise grounded approach taken with other areas of the show. Still love the prison arc though and Andrea desperately trying to stop the inevitable from going down, which seems to be a thankless task on either side. She doesn’t belong any where now. :'( Like the divide between Glenn and Maggie too, he blames himself and she is shutting him out.
Love the dynamic between Daryl and Carol. Thought it was slightly weird that Carol’s relationship with the inmate was starting to have that same feel to it too. Almost like she was filling a void left by Daryl. Glad Daryl returned, not happy to see Merle again though. Like the Governor I find him a cartoonish, mustache twirling villain in an otherwise realistic world.
Haha, that last sentence is exactly the image I was thinking of when writing my reply.
Agreed about Andrea too and about the prison arc. It’s probably my favourite arc of the series, followed by the Sophia-is-missing arc of Season 2.It’s cool that all the seasons have their own sort of self-contained story while being connected to the overarching arc.
Season Four:
The sickness stuff in season four was pretty great, but really looking forward to second half of the season with every thing being different. No Woodbury. No prison. No Hershel’s farm. Only the unknown. 😀Starbound
Wasteland 2
Xbox One
2 weeks off incoming?
I am not going to leave the house for nothing!
Wastleland 2 looks pretty great. Going to wait until full release though.
Oh man. I just ate some glorious dinner that my gf concocted. I had some wine and I’m pretty much tipsy. Additionally, I’m listening to some FLAC of Lorde – Love Club.
Today was a good day.
THINGS N WORDS
(just some random bored ramblings and thoughts!)
– I had surgery last week and it’s annoying >:/. UGH, EAR. STOP BLEEDING!
– WOOO SURVIVOR!
– Finished Dust: An Elysian Tail recently and it was alright. I probably wouldn’t have considered it at all if it wasn’t for @ash (pretty sure he doesn’t exist anymore) – but thanks for the suggestion!
– A Link Between Worlds is awesome too! I think I’d rank it up there as my favourite 2D Zelda :O (although technically there’s 3D parts but shutup)
– Those two make around 53 games finished this year so far *flex* (I’ve got a list! @dc)
– A few weeks ago Kotaku had an article for Ys: Memories of Celceta. I’ve never played a Ys game, nor did I even know what it was about, but the trailer made it look awesome so I just randomly impulsed the collector’s edition. It arrived today and I just sat there thinking “what the heck am I going to do with all this stuff?”. There’s a Ys branded compass (wut.) and a 3 disc soundtrack of songs from all the Ys games – none of which I’ve played :D. It’s still pretty though, but yeah, odd decision :P. I’m hoping it’ll spark some Ys lovin’
– Don’t really have time for it atm though. Been JRPG’n with Bravely Default and I’ve got a few other games lined up already. It’s weird having money and a job 😛
– I also started AND FINISHED a book last week! The last book I started (Catch-22) was back in like Feb and I only finished that last week as well. I don’t mind reading but I don’t do it frequently enough. Luckily Game of Thrones is pretty cool guy and kept my interest. It also helps that I forgot nearly everything that happened in the show’s first season 😀
– I’ve been playing Rocksmith a lot too. It’s fun! I’ve played guitar long enough so it’s not necessarily improving my playing but what it is doing is making it really fun and easy to learn songs and help me discover songs I would never have discovered otherwise. @beavwa or anyone else wanting to learn guitar/bass – definitely look into it! I would’ve killed to have something like this when I was starting out!
I gots a list too, Greenius, ol pal.

Those are the ones I can remember, I suspect I’ve done a few more that I’ve forgotten. Also a few I’ve finished a couple of times, either because they were that damned fun or because a mate and I were trying to record a coop session.
Dust is a pretty cool game. @scree and I have played it before.
So is Link Between Worlds, definitely my favourite 2D Zelda game. I really liked the ending! \o/
Also, I assume you are only playing Rocksmith to improve your C chords because, let’s be honest, why do you need anything more then the c chord?
I like how I reply to your comment but a new one pops up 😀
What was your previous top? Mine was Link’s Awakening and A Link to the Past.
Yeah I was the same. My top 3 now are
– LBW
– LA
– LTTP
I enjoyed it but I’m really not a fan of the art style. Don’t really like that whole animal cutesy furry amateur kinda look, but mad props to the guy since he pretty much did a lot of the game himself!
Dust 2 pls!
I actually really liked the art style. Also, yes, we need a Dust 2!
I really wants Rocksmith, but I don’t have a lefty electric guitar 🙁 I could always play my bass on it though I guess!
You’re welcome 😉
Wow, you’re back from the dead! How is life as a zombie, ash?
As @greenius rez’ed me, he is now my master….
Catch-22! I read that just two days ago! 😀
A friend gave me a copy seven years ago. Only just read it for the first time last week.
Major Major Major Major!
What have they done to the soundtrack on the new FFVIII?! /o\
That’s what players of the PC version faced back in 2000. Since PCs don’t have the PS1’s sound chip, it’s just using some normal midi thing. There’s a coupla things you can do to fix it. I’m pretty sure there’s a mod which changes the midi library to make it sound more like the PS1 chip, but personally I’d recommend looking up a thing called Roses and Wine, which replaces the music files with pretty decent quality rips from the official soundtrack, so it ends up sounding a smidge better than it actually did on the PS1.
Final Fantasy VII PC had the same thing happen. Terrible MIDI sound files. ;_;
Yeah, they did patch the recent re-release recently, but it took them about a year after its, err, release.
Thank you! Just what I need to better the experience!
Five minutes into Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu, and I’m really enjoying it.
I really liked that one. I think there may have been a second season but I couldn’t get into that one.
Sorry, just testing something. I feel like I have to validate this somehow though. Hmm. Ok, random question. Who is your favourite video game character ever out of any game. Mines probably Auron from Final Fantasy X. He is just so bad-arse! I know he’s not particularly deep or anything, but damn is he cool!
Edit: edited for testing purposes *shifty eyes*
Manny Calavera. For a dead guy, he was so very, very alive.
So many great characters I like. Gabriel Knight. Manny Calavera.
Part of me wants to say Commander Shep from Mass Effect because it was my character.
Sheppard was alright. I didn’t like how vague some of the prompts were. I tried to give my fem-shep a little bit of attitude, next thing I was punching reporters D: Not what I was expecting!
Edited to get me out of goddamn moderation!
Master Chief, mainly because of nostalgia.
Snake.
Solid, Old, Naked – any one will do.
Only snake I’ve ever played as was Old Snake in MGS4. He seemed like a pretty cool dude! 😀 Raiden was pretty sick too! I don’t get all the hate with him though, although I did miss all the early games :3
Edited because Kotaku hates me!
Excluding user created yet generic characters (eg fallout 3/skyrim style) and ones who grow by your choices (since that’d lead to multiple possibilities and no true shepard for example), I’d have to go with Guybrush Threepwood. He’s just too endearingly pathetic to be anything but utterly lovable.
Keep in mind that this nomination contains spoilers:
I know this may not be legitimate because this game is a visual novel and I’ve only taken two of six possible paths, but I would like to nominate Emi Ibarazaki from Katawa Shoujo. She is the pinnacle of overcoming a disability. She is has no legs, and yet she is the track champion. She refuses to let her disability define her. And yet… It does. The process by which she lost her legs was so mentally scarring, yet she refuses to admit it. She has serious emotional initmacy problems. Not in a sexual way, but an emotional way. She will refuse to allow people to get too close to her. She is afraid that if she gets too close to someone, they will either leave her or die, just like her father.
She also such a good character because of her attachment to running. She had been running since she was a child. And then, the car accident happened. She was under hospital care for seven months. (If I remember correctly) During that time, she could not do the one thing in her life that had meaning: run.
For anyone that has no idea what I am talking about, Katawa Shoujo is a visual novel that was made entirely by guys from 4Chan. It is really, really good. One of my top 5 games easily. There are six paths, but I’ve only done two because I can’t handle the EMOTIONS.
I know double nominations probably aren’t allowed, but I’ll also go with Grovyle from Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: explorers of Darkness and Time.
Major Spoilers:Grovyle is a villain. Or is he? I can’t tell for sure. Were you the hero for helping him? Or the villain?
This is the strength of PMDE, the morality is not binary.
In the game, the timelord Dialga went insane and time stopped. In the future, there is no light, no happiness, no innocence.
Grovyle travelled back in time, and is fighting to restore Temporal Tower and change the timeline. But he knows that if he succeeds, he loses. By changing time, he will be removed from existence. Not killed, REMOVED FROM EXISTENCE. If he succeeds, millions will also be removed from existence, including his dearest friends. He is effectively plotting genocide. But were they better off living?
In the game, he is first presented as the antagonist, but as the story progresses, you join him. Was that the right decision? The main “villains” Dusknoir and Dialga, aren’t clear-cut villains. Dusknoir is not opposing Grovyle because he’s a big meanie, he is fighting to protect millions.
Dialga is merely an insane god that has lost control of existence.
Not to mention, Grovyle’s sacrifice was incredibly sad. There is a reason I nominated PMDE as having the best soundtrack of all time.
Holy hell do I like that game. The gameplay was a bit crap, though.
Your answer makes mine seem so shallow, haha! I like Auron because he’s cool, and wears his arm in sling even though he doesn’t need to, and because he wears sunnies at night, and he has a big sword :3
Edit: Aurons my home-boy, wurd!
Hooray! I wasn’t the only one who went with Katawa Shoujo.
I like Lilly though. Emmy is my second favorite though I think Emi actually has a better story as far as story telling goes. She’s the fastest thing on no legs.
I played all 5.
Yeah, I haven’t gotten to Lilly yet. I went for Rin the first time, and it was okay. I actually got the neutral ending and assumed it was the true ending, didn’t go back to it for weeks.
And then I did Emi’s path. So many feels. I am not going to lie, this is the first time I have truly wanted a video game character to be real. Not because of sexytime or”that would be badass,” but because the entire path was about getting to know her as a character. It was quite sad to realise that I really wanted to know the psychology of a character that did not exist. It made everything I had done seem pointless. I was aware the game was not real from the second I played it, but the fact that the characters weren’t real didn’t sink in until after. I never once put myself into the story, it was always Hisao. BUT HISAO’S NOT REAL. NOTHING IS REAL!
After playing Rin’s path, after playing Emi’s, the game would be stuck in my head for about 5 days and achieving work was rather difficult. In the case of Emi’s, it redefined my entire views on characters in fiction. Up until then, I had considered characterisation less important than the overarching tale. Now I don’t know what to think.
But yeah, I haven’t done the other paths. I realise that I am not willing to do them because I am scared of what emotions it would elicit. I don’t like being sad. Why would I play a game that is guaranteed to make me sad?
Jeez, that was a lot of words. I’ve got to go to bed.
Yeah, those feels can be pretty intense.
When I did Emi’s path
I nearly got the bad ending because I was stubborn and derided to worth with what I thought I would do if I was in Hisao’s shoes rather then what I knew I was supposed to do. I had to leave for work just after I got kicked out of her house. Longest 12hour shift I’ve ever done.Hmm. i know my most hated is Alister from Dragon Age: Origins. I hated him so much. Hated that I needed him as a tank for so long.
Felt no guilt sending him to be executed prior to the last phase of the gameFave character is a hard one. I don’t seem to get attached to any of the ones I actualy play as. Many of my favorite games don’t actually have a protaganes or one with a personality.
I’ll probably have to go with Lilly Satou from Katawa Shoujo. She’s just so damned kind. Those feels.
Fun fact. He’s is the only rout without a bad ending. Just good and neutral. She’s just that kind. Most hated character is a tough one for me. I would probably have to say my most hated is Mario. I like the games, I hate him. Something about his stupid red hat and potbelly really irks me for some reason.
Edit: Finally I can post without going into moderation!!!
Since everyone is doing these lists, I guess I’ll list all the games I finished this year. (Or at least, I think I finished this year)
-Bleed http://store.steampowered.com/app/239800/?snr=1_7_15__13
-Saint’s Row 2
-Bionic Commando (2008)
-Dead Space
-Homefront

-Section 8: Prejudice http://store.steampowered.com/app/97100/?snr=1_7_15__13
Yeah… I don’t finish a lot of games, do I?
I hope to finish Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, TESIII3 Morrowind, Deus Ex, RIFT, Supreme Commander, Warhammer 40K Dawn of War 2, Warhammer 40K Space marine, Titan Quest, Saint’s Row 3, and Red Faction before 2014. It’s going to be one hell of a marathon.
Morrowind? jeeeeeesus.
Wooo I’m half of “everyone” 😀
Lords of Shadow is great. It surprised me at how good it was!
I’d do mine but I can’t remember what was on the list last time I posted it. I could try and call upon the power of either my memory, or D.C. to answer this, but lazy.
PC people. got a question.
anyone else use a wired 360 pad & get a BSOD whenever you unplug it?
it’s….. annoying. & seemingly a common issue. but I cant work out a fix. pretty sure I’ve got the latest drivers for the controller & stuff, but a solution is eluding me.
Solution is the wireless 360 controller. 😀
Wired 360 controller here, no BSOD on removal.
Yup, same here.
Same here
Are you doing the safe removal of hardware thing before you pull it out?
What about the latest drivers for your motherboard? It might be a USB issue. I assume you’ve done the very basic stuff of trying different ports
Also, whats the error on the BSOD?
So, @redartifice, have you watched Arby n the Chief?
Or did you refuse to watch based on the stupidity of the premise? Perhaps you realised that some episodes are age-gated, and couldn’t bother signing in? I won’t hate you if you do.
Maybe…
Didn’t get to it yet! I had a crazy busy w’end
Games-pixel-finished-this-year-because-he-wants-to-be-cool-like-the-rest… list…
The Cave*nods, walks off*
Hi everyone,
I’ve written a blog post with regards to the “working for exposure” phenomenon, and put together a survey about crowdfunding.
If you get a couple of minutes, could you please click through and have a look? The more responses I get, the better I can plan for the future!
Thanks
http://shanewsmith.com/2013/12/working-for-exposure/
Exposure, you say?
*unzipping sound*
Guess I asked for that.
Also, inb4 “artist dies of exposure” joke 😛
If you’re planning a kickstarter hopefully it is after the holidays when peoples’ finances are not as stretched.
I’d be happy to support it. 🙂
Thanks, man. Yeah, this is still a while from taking flight. I’m just testing the waters at this stage.
I completed the survey, though may have unintentionally skewed the results :S
Jeeeeeeeeeez
Thanks! 🙂
I read it and did the survey and probably wasn’t helpful. Hooray!
huzzah! \o/
Help I got kicked in the guts and oh god what happened to my heart :'(
Enjoy those shivers, btw
…ok this is odd, just a night or two ago I watched this other video which I think had a brief clip that had her in it? Not sure though.
She’s got a good strong voice on her
So can we get FFXIII-3 collectors edition in Australia? I can’t seem to find it.
EB Games appears to have a preorder bonus steelbook and DLC.
I got to play in snow and Neuschwanstein castle is obscenely pretty.
Today was a good day. One that I will probably struggle to top.
aahh Füssen… now there’s a nice place! we had a few holidays there when i was a kid… Glad you guys are having an awesome time
Snow? Ew.
Just a little jealous.
Good morning Tay…
I’m electing to stay in old TAY because new TAY scares me…
Hope you’re all well this morning!.
I’ve had my morning coffee so i’m going fantastic \o/
Hey Pixel, I’ll circle the wagons with you if you like? For now!
*sigh* peer pressure get the better of me… apparenly being a TAY hipster doesn’t work very well 😛
Because I want to find out what people think before I start tilting at windmills, I ask you to read this blog entry and fill out the attached survey.
http://shanewsmith.com/2013/12/working-for-exposure/
Edit: Morning everyone! How y’all?
So new TAY is going to be official TAY for the rest of the week…guess you’d better repost this again there. 🙂
Wait.. there’s another TAY? Thanks for letting me know! 🙂
Since it’s a new day: LET THE CRINGING BEGIN!
Ugh, why did I leave this tab open? I already know about the new TAY. Christ you’re an idiot Blaghs.
Yep.
:'(
Glorius
How do you insert hyperlinks into ordinary words?
TAY uses HTML tags (as opposed to the bb tags or whatever else that a lot of forums use). So a link is [a href=”link url”]link text[/a] (the quotes around the url are important, as otherwise the link will be formatted as appearing after this page of TAY, and that’s messy. Another one that works and isn’t mentioned is [del]
Strikethrough[/del]. But using > and < rather than square brackets.Huh, that’s surprisingly complex. Thanks for the help. I’ll probably never try it for fear of screwing it up.
*circles the wagons*

*Dies*?
Old TAY, we hardly knew ye.
So… I played some more Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. I now wish I hadn’t.
I reached the second “Penumbra of the Titan” boss fight. It was HORRRIBLE. Remember when I said the game played fine on mouse+keyboard? It doesn’t apply to this bosses horrid QTE’s. The game keeps expecting me to make a circle movement with the analogue stick. This is nigh-impossible to recreate on a keyboard*. You have to complete this QTE to be able to attack the boss. I successfully completed this QTE about three times. I spent 51 (I checked) minutes on this boss fight before I gave up. I literally shed a tear at some point. I was whimpering by the end. This was one of my worst hours in gaming history. The boss fight is terrible. The boss fight does well when it comes to empty spectacle, since it looks great**, the music is great***, but everything else is as well-executed as the Crimean War. The music gets a BIT annoying when it loops several times over the course of 51 minutes. Was it worth just to hear Claudia curse at the Titan****? No.

Let’s hope the links work.
What else is there to say? I think I might quit this game right where I stand. Nothing the game does from this point on can make up for the boss fight. I probably won’t ever be able to beat it anyway. Goodbye, Castlevania, it was good while it lasted.
Hey everyone, how was today? Last song played was 3005 by Childish Gambino
I guess I should set up this stupid Gravatar thing if I want to have a profile picture. Let’s hope I don’t screw this up.
Success! Now I can show my true form in public!
What happened to TAY?
Is it dead?
Nobody seems to have commented all day.
My heart turns to lead.
Numerous scenarios spring to mind.
Did everyone flee?
Was it @weresmurf’s behind?
I call for TAY’s brethren: @strange, @shane, @scree!
Didn’t intend to have it be a sonnet, but I just rolled with it.
Oh, I think I am in the wrong TAY. That explains it.
Yep, there’s a new TAY 😛
http://www.kotaku.com.au/2013/12/talk-amongst-yourselves-256
I like your Gravatar…sorry you were hanging out in the wrong TAY though!
hmmm
