Trade-in offers are rather common — many retailers, including stores other than Gamestop, will take in old equipment in exchange for money or credit. This includes Microsoft — which will currently take your old 360s…and your old PS3s, too.
In fact, there are reports of Microsoft emailing this ad to people:
…which almost makes it sound as if it’s a PS3-only offer, when it’s not. According to the Microsoft Store website, you can trade in the PS3, Xbox 360 S or Xbox 360 E for store credit. The consoles have to work for Microsoft to take them in, of course, and the offer is only good until March 2nd in the United States.
Its cool that they’re not discriminating and are letting people trade in more than one last-gen console, but…it’s also kind of weird, no? Just what are the Microsoft Stores gonna do with all the PS3s they get? Its not like the Microsoft Store sells PS3s. I can just imagine sad stack of boxes of PS3s in the back of Microsoft stores…aww.

The most sensible thing for a ps3 owner in the U.S would be to hold onto it and buy a $400 ps4. You now have 2 consoles and still saved $100.
Yep, was going to post the same thing. You can save US$100 buy just buying a PS4 instead of an XBone and you’ll still have your old PS3 / 360 so you can play your old games, too.
I think you’ve summed up why I’ll be getting a Steam Machine once my rig dies.
Crazy thought, but I have a sneaking suspicion that this promotion isn’t targeted at people who want a PS4, but people who want an Xbox One.
If someone has a PS3 to trade to an xbox one, that means they probably aren’t ‘fanboys’ right? Which means that they wouldn’t want to get rid of their old console surly? I keep my old consoles… So yeah, this is really weird and very funny.
Next headline: X-one Cloud confirmed to use Cell processors. (JK)
I don’t know, I sold my PS3 (I never had a 360) right before getting the Xbox One, I only used it for blurays and FIFA.
Exactly!!!
What do you think they’re doing with the XBOX 360s?
…melting them down into Kinects?
If they are 2005 models you wouldn’t even need to buy an incinerator!
Piece the bits together and build a Voltron type gaming super robot?
Taking them to EB and trading them towards PS4’s?
Make them battle to the death with the PS3s?
Weird? Its quite a good idea really from a business perspective. Tempt the curious away from their previous platform, try to instil a bit of brand loyalty with an early discount and make sure they don’t have their PS3 to go back to so their only option is XB1 or nothing.
But when they can stick with their existing brand AND keep their existing console for the same price, it’s not really that enticing a discount. Maybe if the deal actually undercut the PS4 price by $100 (or even $50) it might tempt some. But so far they haven’t really done a very good job of giving people reasons to switch camps.
True but there’s little to be lost by trying. Neither console has anything to make me jump for joy or even really slightly bounce in mild happiness so far
Not even TV or sports or TV?
Not EVEN sports TV!
is this a US, AUS or Global thing?
Looks like America, Canada & Puerto Rico, no mention of it on the AU store that I can see
Can just imagine the people at Microsoft making a large bonfire and then circling around it while performing a ritualistic dance
“Now who’s laughing, now who’s laughing”
This would be great if it wasn’t for the fact that you can get more for your used PS3 on eBay (albeit the accompanying ball ache).
Apparently xbox January sales were really low.
Eh, EB Games gives minimum of 80 for a PS3, and it doesn’t even have to work…
Interesting. Basically they are putting a price on getting a conversion in the console wars, and it is $100.
That cloud of 300,000 servers ain’t gonna build themselves, the power of the cell.
Witchcraft. They will take out the entrails of the PS3 and divine the future of the XBone with them. Or you know, reuse a bunch of electronic components, especially since the XBone has Blu-Ray capabilities and there are hard drives and stuff. The flyer itself even says “let us recycle your PS3”.
Microsoft should just buy Sony, it’s not like they don’t make in a quarter what on current projections Sony makes every 33 years. And Sony is also only just making a profit in the last 2 years after 5 years of losses in the billions.
