Bad news for anyone who loves subscription fees: you won’t need a PlayStation Plus account to play The Elder Scrolls Online on PS4, Bethesda says.
You need Sony’s premium service to play most PS4 games online, but Bethesda’s upcoming MMORPG (out in April for PC/Mac and June for PS4/Xbox One) will be an exception, because it’s got a subscription fee of its own. Posting on the PlayStation Blog this morning, The Elder Scrolls Online director Matt Firor dropped the news.
“A PlayStation Plus membership is not required to play The Elder Scrolls Online,” Firor writes. “PS4 players will only be required to pay the same monthly subscription associated with The Elder Scrolls Online that PC and Mac users will pay — nothing more.”
Also, PS4 players will be on a different server than PC/Mac players. No word on Xbox One/Xbox Live just yet.

Forbes says you will need Xbox Live Gold Sub – http://www.forbes.com/sites/davidthier/2014/01/28/elder-scrolls-online-wont-require-ps-but-will-require-xbox-live-gold/
How much is the monthly subscription going to be?
$14.99 per month with discounts for players who buy several months at at time.
I probably wasn’t going to jump on this game because of the subscription cost, but if console and PC players are separate I see less of a reason to play.
Initial purchase + subscription + ingame store is what turned me off.
Call this wishful thinking, but it would be better (and more appealing) if PS+ and XBL Gold subscriptions allowed you access to TESO. Beth are already asking for the game to be purchased at full retail price, so it’s not like they’d be losing all of their profit.
It’s good in theory but it’s very wishful thinking.
The problem will come down to Bethesda having to pay the server upkeep and not Sony/Microsoft. Bethesda won’t see any of the money from the PS+/XBL subs.
Well this is a completely pointless situation.
How many people on the PS4 now DON’T have PS+?
It might be good for the 0.0002% of the Sony playerbase that want to play this on PS4 and DON’T have PS+?
It’s the game sub cost in itself at $15 a month people have a problem with, not whether it requires a 3rd party sub or not.
After their trial expires, a lot. There’s not many games out, and even less multiplayer, so having PS+ when you only have a PS4 is silly.
What? I have a PS3, PS4 and Vita and all have at least 3 free games on each, all amounting to greater than the cost of the PS+ subscription fee itself. It isn’t silly, it’s a lot of content for very little money.
People do exist with only a PS4. 😛 At this stage, if you’re not into COD/BF4 multiplayer, PS+ isn’t much value. At this stage.
Awesome so I don’t have to pay for PS+ so the rest of my games are useless with no online multiplayer.
Thanks Bethesda you money grabbing whores.
you do understand how capitalism works right?
I should really pick up skyrim..
Nobody cares about this.
The real question is: How much for the horse armour?
Horse armor also has a monthly subscription, but you don’t need to be subscribed to elder scrolls online to do so. You can buy it just for bragging rights.
FF14 managed to get cross play between PC and ps3 users seems strange that this game couldnt achieve the same thing.
its not strange nor is it hard, deve, opers just wont do it because of the fact that PC players were curbstomping console users due to using mouse and keyboard instead of a slow controller
Only reason they are doing this is so people can no longer argue that they are paying two monthly fees for this game. I’m guessing the people that were arguing this were hoping they would drop the monthly fee for the game, not say that P+ is no longer needed. This change makes no difference to 99% of users.
Not that it matters… I mean, every MMO to date has shown that if you’re playing an MMO on a console, you’re kinda doing it wrong in the first place.
Although… Who knows, maybe this will be the first one to not be inferior on consoles. (Seriously doubt it.)
Chrome hounds was the best mmo I EVER played ohh and that was on the 360
This game’s still going to be $80+ on a console right?
I’d be cool with it being <$40 and a subscription, but full price is more than a bit rubbish.
It actually shows that Bethesda don’t have a lot of faith in their own product (or whoever is publishing it), if they thought people were going to play it for more than a month then they shouldn’t need to charge full retail for it.
all subscribition MMOs have been full priced + subscribition at release since everquest. ie WoW, DAOC, Age of Conan, Aion, Tera, Rift, SWTOR, Warhammer. Guild Wars and Defiance are the only MMOs that just have a one off purchase
PS+ is NOT The Elder Scrolls Online, it’s a different service that offers loads of value to those who are interested. They aren’t connected by any means besides the delivery system. Why would you expect a company to pay for your product on your behalf?
