Infocom’s classic The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy turns 30 this year, and to celebrate, the BBC will publish an updated online version of the game on March 8, the 36th anniversary of the series’ first radio broadcast.
The BBC did something like this in 2004 for the 20th anniversary of the game, releasing the original in two editions playable on a web browser. It was a wildly popular re-release, luring millions in to play and even winning a BAFTA award for Best Online Entertainment.
The re-release promises to update that game with high definition graphics, plus support for tablets and, of course, to share one’s gameplay over social media. The original game was published for the Commodore 64 and Amiga, Atari 8-bit and ST computers, DOS, Macintosh and Apple ][. If you wish to play the 20th anniversary edition of the browser game, you can revisit it here. Otherwise, the update will be live on the BBC site on March 8.

But will it have microtransactions?
I’ve played it, its the only text-based game I ever got into, purely because the source material is pure gold.

High definition text adventure? Does that mean we get proper kerning and anti-aliased TrueType fonts?
Wingdings have never looked so realistic!
ah the babel fish puzzle
This was actually scheduled for release on the 10th anniversary, but it was held up in the Vogon bureaucratic machine…
Wow I still have the original. Awesome stuff.
