It’s schoolgirls in sailor suits. Make that zombie schoolgirls in sailor suits. Oh, did I mention there’s dancing, too? There is. Namco Bandai’s newest arcade game is called Sailor Zombie: AKB48 Arcade Edition and stars Japan’s biggest girl group AKB48.
Gpara reports that the game features seven members, including Yuko Oshima, Mayu Watanabe and Yuki Kashiwagi. You fire vaccine bullets (uh, love vaccines) at the zombie AKB48 members as well as large monsters.
As you progress through the game, Sailor Zombie suddenly turns into a rhythm game, with the zombie schoolgirls dancing to AKB48 tunes.
Starting this April, Sailor Zombie: AKB48 Arcade Edition rolls out in arcades across Japan. Meanwhile, the schoolgirl book I wrote, Japanese Schoolgirl Confidential, just got a new, full colour edition with 16 new pages. Would have liked to include this as it’s yet another example of the power of the sailor suit in Japanese pop culture.

I’m more shocked that Namco is still making arcade games.
Arcades are definitely still popular in Japan, between the station and my apartment there’s two arcades and if I want to play one of the rhythm games I have to go after 8pm or so or else I have to wait in line behind school kids.
But no Atsuko, not that I would shoot her
Yes yes I know, she graduated.
