Metal Gear’s story is a mess. Hideo Kojima might make great stealth games, but, the dude also needs an editor.
With Metal Gear Solid V (and its prequel) on the way, there might be people who have never played a Metal Gear game before wanting to get in on the action. Or veteran players who might be out of the loop and want to get back into things.
If that’s you, then may God have mercy on your soul, because AudioRejectz’s guide — while being as concise as it could probably be — is still some heavy reading.
Thankfully, it’s also in bullet-point, chronological form, so you can also use it as a mid-game reference for all those “huh?” moments.
Know that there are some spoilers, but the big ones have been kept secret where possible.

METAL GEAR?!
The metal gear story is no more convoluted than many western stories of comparable length when it’s layed out in the linked article. Playing the games in chronological order helps but I think it is also bit of lost in translation, there are plenty of Japanese stories in games and shows that don’t quite make perfect sense when you overlay western sensibilities.
Though I have never seen anyone investigate if people who play it and understand it in its native tongue are equally confused as us westerners.
!
Kept you waiting huh?
I’m never going to be able to take MGS1-3 seriously again after watching the “Lets destroy Metal Gear/the Shagohod” series. Sums up the story, and cracks plenty of jokes along the way.
The full summary is actually a good read, cuts out a lot of the plot and just puts it up as a quick and to the point summary of each game and overall plot.
A Hind D?
It’s just a super-soldier looking for big, walking nukes.
Whats wrong snake? Snaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaake
Hm!?…… Who’s footprints are these?
