Arcade Classic Gauntlet Is Getting A Remake

First released in 1985, Gauntlet was a genre-defining arcade dungeon crawler. Now, it's being re-released for PC, in the form of a top-down co-op action RPG, all prettied up and modernised for a new audience.

Magicka creator Arrowhead Game Studios is developing the new Gauntlet, which will feature full Steam Machine and SteamOS integration along with both local and online multiplayer. In addition to the above trailer, here's a bit from the press release describing the gameplay:

Players select from four classic fantasy-based characters: Warrior, Wizard, Valkyrie, or Elf. Each character has its own unique strengths and weaknesses. For example, the Warrior does the most damage in melee combat, the Wizard has the most powerful magic, the Valkyrie has the most armour and the Elf moves the fastest. Distinctive play styles, procedural dungeons and an impressive art style keep the gameplay fresh.

Upon selecting a playable character, the gameplay is set within dungeons where the object is to fight through the chambers slaying evil creatures and completing challenges. An assortment of special items can be located in each dungeon that can restore the player's health, unlock doors, and shift the odds in the player's favour with magical relics which can aid the player in surviving longer in the Gauntlet. The enemies are a vast assortment of fantasy-based monsters, including ghosts, grunts, demons, spiders, sorcerers and skeleton warriors.

Gauntlet is expected to arrive on Steam in the third quarter of 2014.

Hang about, you can remake old games and not have them Free-To-Play? I was looking forward to Gauntletville Saga.

      Pow!! Right in the ovaries!!

As for the game itself, AWESOME, I remember wasting away the weekend playing Gauntlet with my mate when we were kids, looking forward to seeing this

And not on mobile either? I can just USE a potion whenever I want, without having to wait an arbitrarily mandated 24 hours? Madness!

    Red elf shot the food!

Ahhh, I remember the Gauntlet trolling all too well...

Awesome! I'm been waiting for a new title in this series since Gauntlet Legends on the '64...

You didn't catch Dark Legacy or Seven Sorrows?

Dark Legacy yes... Always seemed like an expansion to Legends rather than a real 'sequel'...

Seven Sorrows I haven't played, though it's on XBL so I may just have to!

How many remakes is this, now?

I'd really just be happy with Gauntlet Legends HD.

I'm hoping this is first person and has lots and lots of storyline, auto-aim and quick time events. Because that's what Gauntlet was all about.

I'm impressed that the Valkyrie seems to be wearing armour!
    Poor Warrior though.

I always used to play as Valkyrie because girl power but felt embarrassed at how scantily clad she was, so this excites me greatly!

I see they have one special move. . . spinning!

It looks fantastic, my only issue is arrowhead's netcode isn't the most reliable...

Hope the unlockable classes are included (oh who am I kidding, hello dlc)

I hope the DLC includes the characters from Gauntlet: The Third Encounter, like Pirate, Samurai, Gunfighter, Android, Punkrocker, and Nerd.

You could wait for this, or you could get Hammerwatch now.

Yeah, my first thought about, "Arcade classic Gauntlet is getting a remake..." was, "What... again? Ohhhhhh, you mean an official remake, not just another millionth clone that captures the spirit of Gauntlet, sometimes without even intending to..."

Its just not the same if you aren't playing with 4 people on one keyboard...
