The Daily HaiTaku

Looks like it was all too easy yesterday as I expected. Well done to Dr Curlytek who guess Shining Force. YOU DEFEATED!

Today's haiku is by meeeeee...

It was the best one A problem with memory It's only real flaw

Oh man, this is about as cryptic and vague as it gets. This is the ultimate haiku challenge. Good luck.

This is HaiTaku. We write haikus about old video games and leave it you to guess what game we're talking about. If you want to submit a Haiku feel free. Send it here!

I'm gonna take a stab in the dark and say Final Fantasy VII... Was that the best one?

    Wing Commander 3?

Ok, hilarious tidbit of trivia for the original Wing Commander that I didn't actually know.

As development for Wing Commander came to a close, the EMM386 Memory manager the game used would give an exception when the user exited the game. It would print out a message similar to "EMM386 Memory manager error..." with additional information. The team could not isolate and fix the error and they needed to ship it as soon as possible. As a work-around, one of the game's programmers, Ken Demarest III, hex-edited the memory manager so it displayed a different message. Instead of the error message, it printed "Thank you for playing Wing Commander."

Something that needed the N64 expansion pak?

So either of Donkey Kong 64 or Majora's Mask? They were the only 2 that actually "required" the pak to work from memory.

Perfect Dark required it as well.

& @beavwa - Was required for most of the game, but technically not "required" to play. That's what I was getting at.

          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Perfect_Dark_Expansion_Pak_Info.jpg

They utilised the expansion pack so that they could do more with the game, but it wasn't required due to bugs, like DK64 was.

        Beat me to it!

DK64 was what came to mind. It was the game which was the reason for making the expansion pack, not intentionally, but because it was the only way to fix a bug which they could not otherwise solve.

It's certainly *my* favourite DK game.... but I didn't think it was Mark's, so I don't know.

Yeah, I don't know that anybody would call DK64 the "best one" with memory being its only real flaw. DK Rap anybody?

The Game of editing your Autoexec.bat or config.sys files for Extended/Expanded memory?

    Great game that one!

Many memories of that one! And later, creating batch files to run CD games which had been copied to the hard drive.

    Space Station Silicon Valley

      Oh man, nobody remembers that!

      It was so good!

I was playing it a few weeks ago.

          The music! The sheep!

I remember reading about the game in an old magazine as a kid and thought it sounded like the most amazing thing ever, then I played it and it was so silly, but I still liked it.

    Need a little help?

    http://www.its-not-its.info

Ohhhhhhh... If you want it to be possessive, it's just 'I-T-S.' But, if it's supposed to be a contraction then it's 'I-T-apostrophe-S,' --- scalawag.

Thank god for the people like you who are keeping this world safe from stray apostrophes. Forget our countless other troubles, forget ignoring minor mistakes that in no way change the experience. Oh and who cares about engaging the subject matter, right? Cos (there's one just for you to correct) correcting spelling and grammar is where it's at!! The countless fools who think correcting spelling and grammar is a sign of their intelligence, who do so because of the momentary feeling of superiority, my god.... (The one thing they usually have in common? They're arrogant 19 year old's.)

No. I was bored and had nothing better to do. And just because it's the internet, it doesn't mean someone should take their foot of the gas. So please have a Coke and a smile...

These guys are paid to write. One of the major parts of their jobs they should be getting right, is grammar!

Nothing wrong with pointing it out IMO. Though it was kind of done in a snarky manner.

I hope your not talking about FarCry 2 (with it's seriously horrid memory leak problem)
EDIT: Best is also based on perspective :S

Hang on. It's Mark. Therefore skating + Nintendo.

So it must be Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2?

    Monkey Island 2.

Needed to use a custom boot disk to free up RAM to play that on PC. And it was the best one... :)

Flashback, so much better than fade to grey or Another world (spiritual prequel), he cannot remember anything

oooohhhhh nice guess. And AWESOME game!

Didn't get into the remake too much, because the original is still awesome. The art style and rotoscoped graphics are what make it so fantastic!

Yeh I like this guess. Great game, used to smash it at my mate's place on his Sega.
Best-selling French game of all time too, according to wiki.

    Metroid: Other M.....

It had that Pyrosphere door glitch where you would be stuck in the room and have to completely restart the game.

No Mercy on the 64. Widely considered the best WWF game of all time. It did have a bug that caused a lot of wiped save files though.

Seems to obvious and therefore probably wrong, but:

    Remember Me?

Ultima 7 - clearly the best in the series and getting enough memory to run it was a NIGHTMARE!

What about a cartridge with battery backup etc??
    Pokemon Blue?

      The Legend of Zelda!
Battery was only meant to last around 5 years, but mine was still going strong 15 years later.
