This is the week I’ve been waiting for. Oh dear lord is has come. Dark Souls II and Titanfall in the same week. Time to scrape some DNA off that mole on my butt and clone myself.
1954 Alcatraz (PC)
What is it? Hey wait a minute, wasn’t this supposed to come out last week?
Should you care? Well, it’s a cool concept/period piece/adventure game thing. Nice idea.
Atelier Escha & Logy: Alchemists of the Dusk Sky (PS3)
What is it? Another JRPG with an inexplicably long name.
Should you care? Apparently this is pretty good — it has reviewed well at least.
Cypress Inheritance: The Beginning (PC)
What is it? An action RPG that’s being touted as a realistic game without tutorials.
Should you care? I dunno. I’ve personally heard very little about this.
Dark Souls II (360/PS3)
What is it? The sequel to my own personal favourite game of the last generation.
Should you care? I couldn’t be more hyped about this. However, I love Dark Souls more than any game released in the last five years, so you might want to take my hyperbole with a pinch of salt.
Dominique Pamplemousse (PC)
What is it? A dazzlingly original adventure game that is also a musical with one of the most incredible art styles I’ve seen.
Should you care? Absolutely. This looks great.
Frozen Endzone (PC)
What is it? It’s a new turn based game from the creators of Frozen Synapse.
Should you care? Frozen Synapse was great. This might also be great. That’s the extent of my reasoning.
Mitsurugi Kamui Hikae (PC)
What is it? A high speed arena based slasher that was greenlit on Steam recently recently.
Should you care? This is another of those greenlit Steam games I’m not too up on. Maybe head here for a bit more info.
The Pinball Arcade (PS4)
What is it? It’s a pinball video game thing.
Should you care? I like these things. But if you have no interest in pinball then, yeah… this is a niche thing for sure.
Titanfall (Xbox One/PC)
What is it? It’s the saviour of next-gen gaming! The shooter that will turn water into wine, etc.
Should you care? In all seriousness, Titanfall is great. Hopefully the lag thing won’t ruin the experience here in Australia.
Yoshi’s New Island (3DS)
What is it? A new Yoshi game. On 3DS.
Should you care? This is weird for me. I love the original Yoshi’s Island so much. It might be the best 2D platformer ever made. But Nintendo hasn’t made a decent game with ‘Yoshi’ in the title ever since. So I’m not holding out much hope for this.

SNAKEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Snakes! Why did it have to be Snakes?
Dark Souls 2 release is the first time I have genuinely considered calling in sick for a release.
Also add in that True Detective finale this week with Titanfall. Its an entertainment multiple orgasm.
TRUE DETECTIVE!!!!!
I love how expanded they can make the narrative when they don’t need to be restricted by leaving it open for a second season.
Atelier Escha and Logy actually ended up coming out last week. It was only just recently the date changed to this week so maybe someone dunned goofed? I’d be playing it right now but:
Lightning Returns Spoiler
– Bhunivelze 4th form– Dark Souls II
I really wanted to pick up Titanfall at launch but didn’t budget for it. Payday isn’t til Saturday!
Hnnngh… well, I probably wouldn’t have had time to play it til the weekend anyway.
Yeah same. Makes me wonder if I’m gonna log on on the weekend and get destroyed by all these kids who have time to level up to crazy levels.
In all fairness I was probably going to get wrecked by kids who played the beta non-stop, so being a couple of days post-launch isn’t the end of the world.
Having played the Beta you could get into Titanfall three months down the track and still do very well with the starter weapons and Titans. It is just a matter of playing smart and using your team mates as cannon fodder at times.
Yeah the beta felt like it was a very dynamic game. Like you could come in and still have fun. Thr level cap was only 14, so it was very confined. Curious to see how it will be when I start as level 1 vs level 20 or 30. I got some ideas for tricks and strategies I picked up during beta.
This is also a good point. I jumped in the beta pretty late and really did feel like you could still be competitive based on how you played as opposed to which toys you’d unlocked.
No it is not. But in the past with games such as battlefield, I found myself get wrecked by superior weaponry simply due to the level difference and time invested. Really started to hate the game when you pump someone full of bullets and they turn around and kill you with a single shot.
However, titanfall didn’t seem like that on beta. Once again though they aren’t revealing everything. Still gonna buy it and find out.
Probably. A week after Plants Vs Zombies: GW launched I came across a guy that was level 71, think I was only level 28 at the time.
I’m going to jump into PvZ next weekend as well. Glad that one’s co-op!
As much as I’m looking forward to titanfall, I’m more excited for next week Metal gear, FF HD and Infamous
If my Titanfall copy doesn’t arrive this working week from ozgameshop, I will besiege a plague of locusts around their headquarters.
EDIT: Crap. I bet they’d have snacks and copies of Titanfall to play inside.
Same here…… I am not too hopeful of getting it prior to the weekend, but we live in hope.
I am not ready for Dark Souls II.
I will never be ready.
*buys Dark Souls II at launch*
Release a difficult, time consuming game over the holidays?
Nah, we’ll release it when you get back to Uni/Work.
I have doubts about Titanfall, severe doubts. Whether I can hold off buy it for a bit though is another matter. Guess there is always EB’s 7 day return.
Yeah, I played the beta, and at first I thought it was awesome….then after a few hrs of running about, and hopping in my Titan, and realising that’s all there was to the entire game, I was thinking that I’d get bored of it really fast.
The I played it again the next night and enjoyed it again…
Now I don’t know what to think…or who I am…or where my pants are…
Im hoping the beta was more of a vertical slice of the game rather than “the whole game”.
From what I have been reading on the whirlpool forums from people who have gotten the game running early that it almost exactly the same as the Beta just with more maps and weapons.
Did people like Yoshi 64? I was dissapointed because I thought it was going to be like the snes. In hindsight now I don’t know how to feel about the game.
Also tempted to buy a ‘You Died’ t-shirt in prep of Darksouls II.
Oddly enough my mum really liked it. She liked platformers like Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario World and Yoshi’s Island but the drop in difficulty worked for her.
Looking back Yoshi Story was a good game for what it was but it was released at a time when all the great platformers were doing gimmicky, half-baked ‘3D’ games. Fans were absolutely starved for a great 2D platformer. So Yoshi Story comes along and everyone gets excited, but Nintendo failed to get the message across that it’s not a game aimed at people who loved Super Mario Bros 3, Yoshi’s Island or Super Mario World. Hard for that not to result in a lot of disappointed gamers.
I remember being super eager to play it when I first got it home so I started playing even though I knew I had to go out in like 30 minutes, and I ended up beating it with time to spare. There was a little bit of replay value in unlocking the Yoshi’s and progressing through the story differently but it would be considered pretty light even for a modern mobile, indy or XBLA/PSN game.
So it wasn’t just me than. I recall it being super short, but I wasn’t sure if I knew about the mutiple paths back then. I didn’t like the art style back then, but I think it was really nicely done now.
It’s why I ask the question now. For example, I didn’t like StarFox64 when I was a kid because I thought it was too short. Only years later I became aware of the multiple paths and replay value.
Thank science for the internet. You only used find these things through word of mouth or having a game mag subscription.
Interesting that you bring up Starfox. I’d never really thought about it before but I loved Star Fox for the things I hated about Yoshi Story. Although I also loved the gameplay in Star Fox and it had a proper narrative. Yoshi Story was easy enough that the paths were more of a choice than a challenge, where with Star Fox you had to work your butt off to get anything other than the default path.
Yeah this is true. If you missed it you were more inclined to keep going for another path or try again all together.
Thanks man that was good.
Haven’t finished the original Dark Souls yet (in the Tomb of the Giants at the moment, do I have much longer to go?), but I really want to grab DS2. Can’t wait for Titanfall as well, had a blast with the Beta.
Also holding out some optimism for Yoshi. Would have loved it to be more akin to Yoshi’s Story, but this still looks pretty fun.
The wife got me the X1 Titanfall bundle for my birthday…I’m freaking out!!! NEED TITANFALL NOW!!!
Thats a good wife… My Ms has hinted about a ps4 for my bday (we bought the x1 together at release). She keeps asking me what game I would buy if I had a ps4… dont know what to tell her!
Holding out on Dark Souls ll in till I hear a definitive answer on a next gen port.
I was going to do the same thing. Then I figured it’s a game worth buying twice.
But I guess it depends on how smoothly it will run on ps3/xbox360.
There is nothing, that will prise my attention away from Dark Souls II.
Can anybody confirm the Australian release. My pre-order (JB) says 13th March, as well as EB. Where as kotaku and some others have said 14th?
EB and JB are releasing at 13th, I double checked.
Speaking of which, I attempted to upgrade my black armour edition to a collectors edition today at EB but they were all sold out.
Here’s hoping I can upgrade on the day I pick it up, if there are any lying around.
I missed out as well, JB had some last time i checked (That’s where I pre-ordered my collectors edition). Only issue being its online only, so will have to wait for delivery. Which should arrive by Friday, since they post the day before release.
EB promotional material in-store all says 14th, but I (and several others) have double and triple checked with EB, including a call to head office.
Uniform response: Release date is 13th.
Awesome. It’s quite strange as all the information around plus the trailers say the 14th March for the console release. I’m not complaining though!
yay it has finally started.
next/current gen begins March 2014
im excited for titan fall but more in the interested to see how it impacts xbone sales and how live/servers holds up. im not really into multiplayer shooters anymore but can see this haing a big impact on others.
soon we will have second son and MGS and we now know when watch dogs is coming. glad to have a ps4 and xbox one now
plus im still playing donkey kong country and that game is brilliant
The live servers have always been rock solid, wouldn’t be worried. Also keen to see how much Titanfall impacts x1 sales…
I want to see Titanfall on the 360 before making a move either way.
I recall rather enjoying Yoshi’s Island DS. Sure, it wasn’t as great as the original (and just wasn’t the same without Super FX :P), but it was still decent and I think got kinda brutal towards the end there.
Oh, and Yoshi Touch ‘n’ Go! Most people don’t give a crap about that, but I had lots of fun with it. Also had a very cool version of the YI theme song.
Man Dark Souls II finally! then Reaper of Souls, MGSV and Second Son over the next couple of weeks.
Glad I am about to finish South Park tonight phew.
Why do all the GOTY’s come out in friggin’ March nowdays.
