Between PS1 Classics and newer games like Persona 4 Golden, the unheralded PlayStation Vita has become an essential beast for JRPG fans and today brings news of more cool Japanese stuff for western gamers.
In addition to Freedom Wars, which we talked about earlier, Sony has just announced plans to localise the Soul Sacrifice remake (Soul Sacrifice Delta) and a new JRPG called Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines. “In case you haven’t guessed it by now,” writes Sony’s Tomoyo Kimura, “it’s an RPG in which you take charge of an ancient Japanese clan that have been cursed with a maximum lifespan of just 2 years. Your task is to lead the clan on their quest to lift the curse and enlist the help of gods inspired by Japanese mythology to make sure each new generation of the clan is more powerful than the last.”
We don’t know much about Oreshika yet, but it’s a sequel to Over My Dead Body, a PlayStation RPG that never left Japan. It sure is pretty.
On top of those official announcements, rumours are pointing to a possible localisation of Tales of Hearts R, the Vita remake of Tales of Hearts, which also never came to North America. That one isn’t official yet, but the game showed up on a GameStop product listing, which has since been deleted, as a “GameStop exclusive.”
Now all we need is a Vita remake of Final Fantasy Type-0. And maybe some better PS1 Classics support. And PS2 Classics. On second thought, we still need a lot of stuff.

My first thought was toddlers in samurai outfits.
My first thought was that with a lifespan of 2 years, it won’t be ancient for very long.
I love my Vita so many great RPG’s out and coming out
Don’t be ridiculous. There are no games for the Vita! /s
This please!
Final Fantasy Type-0
That’s all.
I think Namco Bandai learnt with Tales of Xillia that people are still interested in there action JRPGs.
Tales of the Abyss on 3DS in Europe apparently exceeded sales expectations and required several reprints. (Source: WIkipedia.) I actually bought a copy of the Japanese version of Hearts R, but have not yet had the courage to start playing it.
Conception 2 is due for release shortly (has already shipped from OzGameShop); Demon Gaze is out shortly, as is Ragnarok Odyssey Ace. Deception IV came out not long ago, although it’s not really a JRPG. Sorcery Saga & FFX/X-2 were also out not long ago.
It’s getting so almost half the Western Vita releases are JRPGs. I’m not complaining.
I was really tempted to buy a Japanese copy of Tales of Hearts R, but got scared off. Only 3000 yen, too!
I got a Japanese copy of Katamari Damacy instead, because that game really can’t be any more confusing.
I want that game soooo much! Tales games are amazingggg!
We need a good original turn based jrpg! Action jrpgs usually lack story and context and are just mobster killing quests, I want something with purpose! And epic cinematic too 😀
Like Persona 4 Golden??? That game really has the “purpose” part down pat. But seriously, I was really surprised about the quality of Tales of Xillia’s story (I only expected monster killing quests). Sure, the game wasn’t amazing, but it’s still my second favourite JRPG of 2013 (FE: Awakening is first!)
Never really got into persona, lifeless floating heads during dialogue, the whole gameplay being completely separate from dialogue and the lack of any real animation excluding battles, it all just really seems cheap.
And that’s the way the fans like it. With JRPGs, oftentimes the gameplay and the story are what the fans are looking for, not fancy presentation.
I’ve been waiting for final fantasy type-0 (xii agito) for soo long. The community PSP patch will be finished august 14 please please bring it to the vita instead need a petition or something. Feels like square ignore the attention that game has gotten from western gamers.
the vita is the best hand held system I have ever owned, and I go way way back to the original GameBoy (i dont count my old game and watches as legit entries). Its a great, and slick piece of kit, and I dont care what people say, it may not have the largest library, but I have been investing far more time in vita games than I have in my 3DS games.
Mine is weighted towards the 3DS at the moment:
3DS- Fire Emblem Awakening (50 hours), Pokemon (20 hours), Kid Icarus (10 hours), others (20 hours).
PS Vita- Katamari (5 hours), Gravity Rush (10 hours), Persona 4 (10 hours).
But then again, I only just got Persona 4 a few days ago, so that’s gonna change!
In my opinion it is a great system. Sony killed it before it came out with the memory cards though.
