What Makes A Bad Game Bad?

If there's one thing I've learned about video games, it's that no two bad games are bad in quite the same way.

In this enjoyable episode of PBS' Game/Show series, host Jamin Warren explores bad games, and tries to get a handle on what makes them that way. It reminds me of the excellent thread on this article, in which our readers listed the worst games they have ever bought. Poor Two Worlds.

Usually a combination of little things. D3 makes a good example.

Good graphics, good gameplay (if you're fresh and not hanging for a D2 experience) and all the bells and whistles.

Game was defeated by the AH ruining the need to do more than gold farm.

I don't think you can call Flappy Bird the worst game of all time. If anyhing, it was the most successful, if you look at the amount of people that became gamers because of it, and how much money it made, etc.

You actually think people 'became' gamers because of Flappy bird? I fully endorse the idea that people applied false ideas towards the game to justify their playing it. I said it since the start and yes I've tried it... Flappy bird is fucking garbage.

I think that if you define a gamer as someone who ahs played a game, then yes, lots of people did become gamers.
Flappy Bird may or may not have been rubbish. But iyou've got to look at its success. The principle of a really hard game with just a score and friendly competition. Now if these concepts were applied to other games, gaming would be better because of it.

Guy is trying to hard to look at game from a philosophical perspective. Carmageddon or Flappy birds as an example he says they lower the quality of game and show that games are just a waste of time. Well who cares if they are. "tucker dale vs evil trailer" as an example it a crappy movie by most other peoples standards, I personally thought it was hilarious and enjoyable and in no way detracts from film making overall. You're around to release time-waster/guilty-pleasure games because that is a demographic.

      You are 100% correct.

As an aside, Tucker and Dale vs Evil is in my top 10. You should track down a copy of the pre-special effects leak. If anything, makes it even better!

How dare he trash on Carmaggedon, that game was amazingly good... in a mindless fun sorta way.

Call of Cthulu: Dark Corners of the Earth was one of my favourite survival horror games. However, without technical support it was also one the most infuriatingly bug riddled pieces of shit I have ever had the misfortune of dedicating so much time just to install, run, play and uninstall.

Jumbo Jet Pilot on the Atari 800, this is easily the worst game ever, on any platform. Look it up.
OMG I can't believe I saved up to buy that piece of crap.
