Astro Duel Turns Asteroids Into A 4-Player Deathmatch

Take Asteroids, throw in a little Combat, and some Mario Kart-style powerups, then shove it all in an iPad for a nice portable experience that you can play with four friends wherever you are. Astro Duel was inspired by the feeling of playing multiplayer Bomberman, and the lack of that type of experience on mobile devices.

I visited Austin recently and developer Rusty Moyher (of Retro Game Crunch) was nice enough to have me over his house to show off his new game.

The game works by using the free Joypad app to turn your iPad into a console and iPhones into controllers. The goals of the game are simple. There are three modes, Headhunters, Team Deathmatch and Last Man Standing. Headhunters is basically a free-for-all where you get one point for a kill and lose a point for dying, and the first to a pre-set number of points wins.

The game has ten levels including hazards like black holes and lasers to keep you on your toes. It also has a collection of settings so you can customise each match to your liking and keep things interesting.

Take a look at the video above to see it in action, and keep an eye out for the game on iPad soon. Look for updates on Rusty’s Twitter or his blog.
