Or is an homage? Or just a kwinky-dink? Whatever this scene from popular anime Love Live is, it sure resembles an episode of Glee.
As pointed out on Japanese bulletin board 2ch, the recently aired sixth episode of Love Live‘s second season has a scene in which the characters are sewing costumes. One of the students (named Hanayo) makes a mistake while sewing, while another one (called Nico) is upset that they have to sew the outfits. Kotori then calms her down.
On the 20th episode of Glee‘s third season, some of the students are sewing costumes. One student (Joe) accidentally pricks himself, while another student (Sugar) is upset that they have to make the outfits. Tina then calms her down. This episode originally aired in 2012 and has been released in Japan.
Here, you can see a side-by-side comparison. Look how many of the shots lineup!
And here, you can watch the scenes back-to-back. (Note that the video is courtesy of Nico Nico and all the dialogue is in Japanese.)
This Love Live episode also has a changing-places scene like the Glee episode, and the ending also seems close to Glee‘s, with some of the anime dialogue appearing to be similar. One of the lines is apparently almost exactly the same.
Online in Japan, some are calling the anime “Rip-Off Live,” while others say this is an homage — especially considering how the anime recently parodied Kiss. Most seem impressive by the original 2ch user’s knowledge of Glee.

Wow, I didn’t realise people actually watched that shit. I feel really bad for whoever spotted this, poor sod.
Anyways, no fucks will be given here.
Yeah, sadly, there is a huge market for creepy cute story-less drama anime. Probably a similar market to glee, ie, the lowest common denominator of both our societies.
People watched it alright. Lots of people. Lots of people who then went out and bought DVDs, blurays and other merch for it at a rate that easily guaranteed it this second season.
Why do I get the feeling that it this was reversed, the Japanese would be clawing for blood?
It has already happened, Gene Simmons son Nick Simmons traced and copied multiple popular Manga series and produced it as his own in his terrible Manga. One of the creators of One Piece or Bleach I think it was was more worried that Nick Simmons was creating Manga himself more then anything.
Considering all the times it’s been reversed, and only the fans went rabid and called for blood I don’t think so.
Wait…. so their complaint is that the show used a standard Over the Shoulder Shot? And then a reverse of the same shot to show conversation….
…Like every person at film school would probably learn on day 1?
Blocking is almost identical, characters are in the same positions, shots change in the same way, same sequence of events happens with quite similar dialogue.
Yeah, I haven’t actually watched the video itself because I don’t care about it that much, so I wasn’t sure if the dialogue was similar. Will take your word for it. 🙂
