Studio Ghibli Characters Sure Look the Same

They don't look exactly the same. But many of the characters from Japan's most beloved anime certainly look similar.

Studio Ghibli, of course, is famous for anime like My Neighbour Totoro, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, and Ponyo — all of which were created by Hayao Miyazaki.

As noted on Japanese Twitter site Ghibli_Fan7, Taiwanese site Fanswong, and perhaps, elsewhere, here are some of the Studio Ghibli characters that resemble each other, whether that's similar hairstyles or facial features.

This is noticeable once you compare them. So let's do just that.

In Castle in the Sky, the image of a young Dola resembles Sheeta — which is probably on purpose.

But, the old lady from Spirited Away resembles the older Dola from Castle in the Sky.

This light-haired page from Howl's Moving Castle looks like Haku from Spirited Away.

Grey-haired Sophie from Howl's Moving Castle looks like Nausicaä from Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.

Fio from Porco Rosso looks like Ursula from Kiki's Delivery Service.

Apprentice Markl from Howl's Moving Castle looks like Ponyo from, uh, Ponyo.

Satsuki from My Neighbour Totoro looks like Kiki from Kiki's Delivery Service and Sheeta from Castle in the Sky. Or maybe it's the other way around? Whichever!

Kamaji from Spirited Away looks like this mechanic from Castle in the Sky. (Both look like Doctor Eggman from Sonic!)

Then, of course, different characters from My Neighbour Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Castle in the Sky, and Kaze Tachinu all share similar physical features.

These similarities are not necessarily a bad thing, and they do make sense. These characters were created by the same studio, and that studio definitely has its own style and look.

I read somewhere that Miyazaki does this on purpose. Just as certain directors choose to hire the same actors for many different films - like Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. Miyazaki chooses to use continual features in his characters to evoke the idea that there is an animated actor playing a part.

I swear there are several anime actors that just go from show to show. There are a number of times I forget I'm watching an animation and go "Hey, aren't they that person from that other show?"

Leiji Matsumoto's been doing this kind of thing since the mid 70s, even Osamu Tezuka is 'guilty' of it.

I'm surprised he didn't throw in Mei (from Totoro) with Ponyo and Markl.
If you find a design you like, stick to it, I guess.

It's sort of like Final Fantasy except they reuse faces instead of names. I don't mind it.

It shocks me you people didn't notice this sooner. Since, ya know, it's super duper obvious. XD

And fairly deliberate. It's a 'house style'. Might as well claim that the classic artists like da Vinci etc often painted people who looked similar. Shock horror.

The fathers from My Neighbour Totoro and Kiki's Delivery Service are literally wearing the same clothes!
