'Worst' PS4 Game Is Getting Rebuilt From Scratch

Normally, if a new release is lacking in some way — be it in terms of quality or because of bugs — the developers will simply patch the game. But in this case the situation is so grim that the developers are starting over and redoing everything.

Basement Crawl is a Bomberman-like horror game that is rated so poorly on Metacritic, it's not only the worst PS4 game on there, it also has a score that's lower than infamous games like Duke Nukem Forever, Aliens: Colonial Marines, and The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct. (Basement Crawl has a score of 27, to be specific.) "Basement Crawl is not only a broken, unfinished game — it's also a poor one," Destructoid wrote in their review of the PS4 launch title.

Speaking to GameSpot, Bloober Team's Marc Colhoun apologized for the situation and pledged to make things right with Basement Crawl.

"Firstly, I think that I should start this off by apologising to those of you who bought Basement Crawl and have been waiting for us to fix it," said Colhoun. "The game was a mess for both you and us."

"Usually, what you will see at this point is a lot of marketing talk and maybe a patch. Rather than accepting defeat on this and issuing a patch that kinda fixes this or kinda improves that, we have decided to just come out and explain to you where we are right now and what we plan to do. We have been rebuilding the game, completely from scratch and on a new engine."

The new version of the game will be free for those who already bought it. The developers are hoping to fix the AI, and add more game types, amongst other things. While they don't promise that the new version of Basement Crawl will be the best game ever, the fact they're going so far to make things right speaks volumes.

There's no current ETA on when the rebuilt version of Basement Crawl will hit the PlayStation Network, but for now it sounds like you might want to hold off on the purchase.

    That's pretty respectable, admitting failure, highlighting their mistakes and taking significant action to address them. When the replacement version comes out, I may well check it out just on the strength of that.

    This is how good stuff is made! You learn from your mistakes and use the experience to make your thing the best it can be! If only EA would follow the same approach (Battlefield 4 still not fixed...)

    While I admire the fact they admit they screwed up, I'm dubious about their ability to pull off a complete re-write. Although they have a bunch of re-usable assets and development experience, they will still need to go through a full development cycle and somehow have the money to pay for it. The team behind Hydrophobia did a similar thing but it wasn't a complete re-write, just a rework of the existing game. Square rewrote FF XIV, but they are a large company with lots of talented staff and money. Stardock managed to do it with Elemental: Fallen Enchantress (née Elemental: War Of Magic) but it's going to be interesting to see whether Bloober Team can do it. The damage may already be done.

      If this is just a bomberman clone though, it won't be quite as large a job as the others you mentioned. If they're reusing all the art assets, it isn't like they're repeating the entire development cycle.
