Well here’s a thing that makes complete sense. Step 1: take a writer on arguably the most successful fantasy TV show ever made. Step 2: ask that writer to create a script for a movie based on a popular licensed product also set in the fantasy genre.
Step 3: Profit?
Magic: The Gathering is the movie, and Bryan Cogman is the writer in question, a writer personally responsible for the following Game of Thrones episodes: Cripples, Bastards, and Broken Things in Season 1, What Is Dead May Never Die is season 2, Kissed by Fire in season 3, and Oathkeeper” and “The Laws of Gods and Men in season 4. A pretty good innings by all accounts. ‘The Laws of Gods and Men’ episode, for reference, was the one featuring that completely bitching Tyrion Lannister speech about how he stands accused of being a dwarf and whatnot. That was a pretty cool speech.
I don’t think we’ve ever seen a movie based on a card game before, and the only movies I can remember based on board games are the terrible Dungeons & Dragons movie and Battleship. Two pretty dreadful movies by all accounts, but the Magic: The Gathering movie appears to be in good hands. It’s being produced by Simon Kinberg, who works on the Marvel franchise for Fox.
Could this actually end up being good?

The adventures of Jace Beleren (and some other people, maybe Chandra)
Or just saying… it could be about the real hero of the Magic universe… Garruk.
All jokes aside, I would love to go back to Kamahl.
Magic the Gathering does have something resembling a plot.
At the time I was playing, it involved a flying pirate ship crashing the moon into an evil god which then turned the ship’s golem into a god.
PSH… That old cliche!
Step 3: Piracy, according to the myriad news articles going around.
*Cough* there are already 3 yugioh movies out with a forth on the way*cough*
so? and you should get that cough checked out
Think implies he isn’t sure. Considering all the things on Kotaku that are Headlines and a GIF, Image or Youtube link I’ll give him a break for not knowing about Yugioh movies. Also Magic will probably be Live Action with a ton of CGI rather than a Cartoon like I’m guessing the Yugioh Movies are.
No movie based on a card game…
Except for, you know, the 18 Pokemon movies
I would really love to see a movie based on the old story of Yawgmoth. IMHO, he is still the best villain in MTG.
Fingers crossed it’s based on the Tempest block storyline.
I’d watch it, regardless how bad the reviews were…not that I’m expecting it to have bad reviews
Actually, Mark is one of the good ones, he actually writes, and very well at that!
Actually mark is not an American. Like all Australian authors, they are not that bad.
Mark is as Aussie as they come… for a Scotsman :oP
