As previously reported, Nintendo’s getting into the toys-into-game business with collectible figurines they’re calling Amiibos.
The Amiibos figures were shown off during a segment for the new Smash Bros. game, where Nintendo president Satoru Iwata touched a Mario figure to a Wii U gamepad and spawned a Mario character into the match. Later on in the digital broadcast, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime discussed how Amiibos will store player data as well.

haha love that Nintendo used the luigi death stare.. you can officially confirm that Nintendo have acknowledged its existence!
Time for all parents out there to get a second job…
Pokemon Stadium-U, featuring amiibo support.
You know it makes sense.
Yes but then we’d have to buy hundreds of mini pokemon Amiibos! You want to massacre my wallet!?

Time for that second mortgage guys! :p
There was right there Nintendo acknowledging the Luigi’s Death Stare.
I hate this news.
I don’t want to buy a piece of plastic to unlock game content. I just want to play my game.
I don’t mind paying for DLC, as I’m paying for the dev time, but if I have to buy plastic crap to go with, it’s inflating the price for reasons I’m not interested in.
Not every player wants to collect figurines, and not every figurine collector wants to play games. Unless there’s some genuine AR-type interaction (as in, the toy is robot controlled by the game software), I’m not interested.
No, You’re right. Not every player wants to collect figurines. And they are not forcing you too either. But there is a huge market for this, If people didn’t like the idea and they didn’t sell then Skylanders wouldn’t exist.
This will sell. and it’s a brilliant move by Nintendo. My guess is they even have some type of Skylander / Amiibo crossover which will be amazing.
Well damn have i got the System for you my Friend… http://i1.ytimg.com/vi/xENKe61B97E/maxresdefault.jpg
Yeah, ROB! That’s more like it 🙂 I miss my ROB :'(.
I would have no problem with this as a product, and it will indeed sell like hotcakes, but my qualms come from the fact that they are being introduced in to franchises I love.
As an established Smash Brothers fan, I want to experience all the content the developers create for the new products, but putting it behind these pay-gates is kind of a deal breaker for me (mostly because the minimalist in me doesn’t want to buy physical goods!).
I miss mine as well 🙁
And you have a valid point. but to be honest Ninetendo would be absolutely stupid to lock players out of great content.
At most i think the Amiibo integration in Smash will be limited to things like costumes. If they integrate Stat changes / powerful move etc it’s a terrible idea.
