Nintendo didn’t go for a live presentation today, but it still had a lot to show this week — and some of that stuff was considered a megaton for fans. New open-world Zelda. Brand new games with fresh ideas. New characters and modes in Smash. Most of what Nintendo showed during their short E3 presentation was a highlight, and most people seem hyped.
Heck, people seemed pumped before anything was actually shown — here’s a small selection of images and GIFs posted leading up to the presentation.
And here’s what people had to say once things got going:
I hope that smash anime exists, and it’s just an endless eight-style plot arc set on final destination

(A part of the Smash Bros. presentation was, amusingly enough, in the style of an anime show.)

Nintendo killing it. A lot to be said for sharp, concise, well-constructed presentation. Live audience presentation not always best format.

(You can import Miis into Smash Bros, is what this person is talking about.)

zelda catches up to the year of the bow and the open world fad
— Patricia Hernandez (@patriciaxh) June 10, 2014
Folks seemed to be awed by the new, open-world Zelda.
The footage did bring up a lot of questions though. Notably, a lot of people seemed concerned with Link’s gender.
One person on Reddit made a veeeery interesting observation about Link’s bracers: they resemble these:
Dun dun dun!!
Comparisons to Skyrim abounded:
One person couldn’t help but ask this question, based on an early demo of the Wii U:
And one person couldn’t give a shit about theories or open worlds:
But let’s go back to Smash Bros for a moment…
People had things to say about Pokemon’s quick appearance, too — most notably, Mudkips mega evolution:
And yes, Francis has something to say about Nintendo too:

Zelda brings the world revolution.
“zelda catches up to the year of the bow and the open world fad”
Zelda invented open world and year of the bow.
To her credit, Patricia is still trying to catch up to the year of journalism.
She sometimes writes good stuff, but my goodness most of the time it’s just ugh…
Hehe exactly, I’m hoping Patricia was joking when she wrote that.
I don’t mind making fun of the ‘year of the bow’ stuff, but calling open world a ‘fad’ is pretty ridiculous.
Last time I checked people don’t like being needlessly restricted.
Lens Flares were a fad.
Giving players an open world is like platformers going 3D in the post-N64 era…. Its not necessary all the time, but it’s also a natural advancement.
Last I checked, open world invention goes to Elite.
When did they promise that Zelda from a couple years ago? They were always pretty clear that that was a tech demo.
Spaceworld 2000 and 2001 2.0
Ie. People are dumb
I much prefer the look they currently have for it, beautiful cell shade type look and bright colours over hyper realism and shades of brown/grey any day.
A week ago i finally resigned to the fact that my Wii U was a Glorified GBA emulator… how the hell did Nintendo manage to change my mind so quickly. I am seriously excited about the Wii U for the first time since i got the machine.
like i have said before the new zelda looks and will most likely be amazing,(still would of preferred the demo look) but i believe the cell shading will probably restrict sales, as most gamers who dont know much about zelda wouldn’t be caught dead playing a “cartoony” game
