Just about nobody is playing as Ness today in today’s Super Smash Bros. Melee competition at Evo 2014. Good reason. The Earthbound hero is considered a bottom-tier character for competitive play. But a guy named Vrud played him. He even dressed the part.
Vrud didn’t win, but he put in a valiant effort that shocked Evo’s announcers and excited the 30,000 people watching the Evo 2014 livestream.
Today’s Smash matches are all best-of-three rounds. Vrud lost his the first round. Above, you’ll see his second.
By contrast, here’s a win by S2J, a top player using Captain Falcon, who is one of the better-regarded characters in the game:
And here’s an incredible show of force by an exceptionally good Yoshi player, VGBC aMSa. Bear in mind, people used to think Yoshi wasn’t a great character for competitive play!
You can watch all of the Evo 2014 matches for Smash and seven other fighting games via Twitch. We’ve got all three streams for you right here.

Ness? BAD?
People only likely label characters like Ness and Lucas bad because they aren’t your everyday Marth of Shiek.
Nes and Lucas are insanely fun. Slow, yes, but fun and powerful. In the past when my friends and I host LAN parties at the local youth centre, I remain undefeated playing a mean Lucas and I plan on maining him in the upcoming Wii U sequel!
TL;DR – Just because they aren’t Marth or Shiek or, doesn’t make them bad. Just higher skillcap involved.
Unfortunately your 2 of 3 points about him make him a bad tournament character.
Slow is very bad for tournament and fun isn’t the name of the game. Plus Ness isn’t really ideal for 1v1 matches, he was always better in the more chaotic 4p matches.
Also these are (supposedly) some of the best players of these games, i dont think skill would be a huge factor.
Won many tournaments as Lucas
Just saying
(Yeah, not ness, but bleh)
And I guess it should be added that just because it’s a “bad” tournament character doesn’t mean they are completely nonviable, just means they are less likely to be focused on.
True, but that just means that if two people of equal skill play, the Ness will always lose to the Fox.
That’s not what that means at all, but ok.
I remember Link and Mewtwo being my favorite characters to play in Melee, always seemed to really well.
Dat Lucas up-smash doe.
Its so hard to watch these vids cause of the constant frame jumping… I just wish they’d put up a better quality recording than this
