The next big game from Gearbox is Battleborn, a first-person multiplayer game that appears to be their take on the MOBA genre. It will be out for PC, Xbox One and PS4.
Here’s the first trailer:
Gearbox announced the game through this month’s issue of Game Informer, and they’re promising more information in the GI cover story. Here’s the press release from publisher 2K:
2K and Gearbox Software — the genre-fusing masters behind the award-winning and best-selling Borderlands franchise — today announced that their next big original IP, Battleborn is in development for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. Affectionately called a hero-shooter by the dev team, Battleborn combines frenetic first-person shooting with co-operative combat, and an expansive collection of diverse heroes to create an experience unlike anything you’ve played before. Set in a distant future, the only hope for the last star in a dying universe is a new breed of warriors who must put aside their differences to drive back an unstoppable menace. Players choose from a myriad of powerful heroes and fight together alongside their friends in a narrative-driven co-operative campaign, or battle against them in fast-paced competitive multiplayer matches.

Really? Gaming needs a new fantasy MOBA like it needs a new brown colored, modern warfare, cover based, multiplayer focused FPS!
Off the top of my head, there’s only one other first-person MOBA I can think of (Smite) and this one is being developed for consoles.

Smite is 3rd Person.
I lold at this because you have a good point, but as matt also states there really isn’t much MOBA for consoles let alone them being first person.
That said – gaming companies are recycling ideas a bit too quickly for my liking these days.
Consoles need a good MOBA game!
Monday Night Combat
I must have missed that one 😐
Its a 3rd Person shooter 5 v 5 with different classes and bots that travel down lanes – only the bots can destroy the objective so you have to escort your bots and destroy the opposition’s – I understand this is the same general principal as a MOBA
Fantasy! Now with more robots, miniguns, rifles, lasers, power armour, laser swords, rockets, mechanical creatures and bowler hats.
All aboard the market flooding bandwagon!
Does the gaming world really need another MOBA? Does it?
I think some people forget that gaming companies are also businesses. If you look at the big games at the moment, what’s making money is MOBA titles. I think this a good move for gearbox and hopefully the money they make on battleborn will give them confidence to make a new IP that’s a bit more crazy. I’m sick of seeing game IPs being recycled over and over again (COD, assassins creed comes to mind).
Gearbox, welcome to the mainstream hum-drum,
Please leave your creativity and innovation at the gate, it is not welcome here
WIll this be outsourced?
I actually like the idea of a 3rd or 1st person MOBA. I’m sick of the same old top down formula.
I hope Heroes of the Storm can reinvigorate these games for me but if not, it would need something different.
I think making it 1st or 3rd person changes the game immensely. More like a counterstrike with mobs and special powers…. could be interesting.
Edit: after watching the video it looks like it could be very similar to wildstar. Perhaps wildstar should make a DOTA style pvp mode…
A robot in a bowler-hat with a shotgun for a cane?
SOLD!
