If Dark Souls Came Out 20 Years Ago

Titan Souls might be a little too on the nose as a name, but when your biggest influences appear to be Shadow of the Colossus and Dark Souls, you may as well wear them proudly.

Titan Souls is a top-down game about one itsy bitsy ant of a man’s lonely journey to slay a bunch of colossal titans, each of whom have wildly varying attack patterns and themes. The twist is, in between all your (somewhat familiar) dodge-rolling, your main method of attack will actually be quite unique:

“Loose your solitary arrow at the monstrous titans and summon it back to your hand to unleash another forceful strike. Dash and run from the titan’s attacks but do not fear death, as it is both inevitable and plentiful in Titan Souls.”

Yep, one arrow. That’s all you have. You can psychically pull it back to you (and sometimes through enemies, to deal damage), but Titan Souls is a game of smartly timed precision strikes.

The full version of Titan Souls — set for release next year — got its start in the form of an excellent free game made as part of the Ludum Dare 28 game jam. It’s pretty hard, but I highly recommend it. The fights are frantic, the ruinous art is quite nice, and the world’s atmosphere is oppressively, beautifully mournful. It’s a great little game, and I’m pleased as a giant slayer who didn’t leave all his other arrows in a his other pants that we’re getting more soon.
