Last night Good Game ran a top 100 games of all time countdown as voted by its Australian audience, and I managed to head into the Good Game studio and talk about some of my own personal favourites for the rundown. Now you can watch the whole thing from start to finish. I’d love to hear your thoughts.
Lists are lists — obviously we’re not going to agree with every single entry, but I think the Good Game Top 100 represented the interests of younger gamers and older gamers. A few entries shocked me — literally BioShock Infinite was way, way too high — and it definitely skewed towards more recent games with a number of older classics not making the cut.
And the number one? Well I don’t want to drop spoilers but I was surprised. I do love the game that the Good Game audience voted as number one, but I can’t say I agree it’s the best game ever made.
But regardless, I thought it was a super interesting episode, well worth watching. I had a lot of fun taking part and (in particular) talking about Halo and Dark Souls!

“Who doesn’t want to fight dragons?”
Me.
Imagine if every time you told someone you enjoyed movies, they assumed you meant adam sander movies. That’s what dragons do to video games.
oh man
any chance of the top 100 list being in text form as well (sorry to be painful)
The whole videos at work issue ….

This is literally the saddest list I have ever seen in my life.

Agreed, it’s a list of “most popular games of the last 4 years”. It’s nothing short of a miracle that some of the all time greats managed to make it in there.
Kids these days I swear…
At least 30 of them are from before 2010
3. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Or maybe newer games are simply better than older games. I’ve been a gamer for 20 years, but once you take off the rose-tinted glasses you realise that a lot of modern games built on the success of the elder. Gaming has been a constantly evolving medium and I think they’re better than ever.
*SHOCK* *HORROR* Not everyone agrees on what are the top 100 games. Oh no!
All for the saddest show I’ve ever seen in my life.
Okay yeah I’m not totally angry but putting Halo 4 above reach is something nobody would ever agree with
Also morrowind below oblivion??? I love both equally but that would be a worldwide outrage hahaha
Putting Halo 4 in at all is beyond me. That was horrible compared to the rest. Reach being my favorite of the series.
Where the hell is Ultima VII.
way to many kids voting 🙁 Sigh.
Imagine if that list was mostly mobile/tablet games.
Ctrl+F > Metroid > 0 of 0
–__–
Arkham City way above Asylum hmmm
Bioshock infinite was abysmal in my opinion. I dont understand how it got in.
Half-life 1 and deus ex 1 deserve to be in top 10.
Watch_dogs was great but didnt deserve a spot.
AND HOW DID MASS EFFECT 3 GET 18??? Number 1 was waaaaaaaaaaaaay better.
Because the ending made Millennials think they’re smarter than the rest of the world.
(I welcome your downvotes)
That also known as the “Metal Gear Effect” isn’t it?
So deep…. and by deep I mean convoluted and messy….
Eh, Kojima usually managed to bring it around down the road. Infinite writers obviously had so many “deep” endings that they couldn’t decide on one, so they decide to go with all of them.
Hold onto your hat!
Watch Dogs at 68!
Probably because its on the side of school buses still…
I played the main campaign and haven’t looked at the game since.
How awesome is it that games are now advertised on buses though!
Yeah, that’s my point. I loved it(so much so i got called a fanboy of it), but not top 100 material.
I liked it too.
Didn’t make my top list but I enjoyed it for what it was. It’s amazing what happens when you don’t play in to and perpetuate hype.
There are a few on that list that are purely there, or are higher than they should be due to how new they are.
i.e. Bioshock (all of them imo, but infinite definitely), Last of Us, Watch_Dogs, Mass Effect 3, Twilight Princess, Tomb Raider.
These are all over rated, or should not be in the top 100 in my opinion. I think any top 100 games, should be more focused on games that revolutionized a genre, introduced a genre or mechanics or are the best of their type.
That’s just my opinion though. I honestly don’t think there were many games from the last few years I would put in the top 50. Maybe in the bottom 50. Perhaps that’s because I remember the SNES.
Twilight Princess is one of the only games on this list that would also appear on mine! (along with Portal 2, OoT, Super Mario 64, Age of Empires 2 and Super Mario Suns… Oh wait, Super Mario Sunshine ISN’T ON THIS LIST???)
Though, it’s always funny seeing the Tomb Raider reboot being placed above not only Uncharted but also the original Tomb Raider games!
Totally agree. BI was an absolute mess. Childish attempts at discussing topical issues, clunky writing that confused depth with complexity, extremely poor shooting mechanics, non-sensical (in context) use of upgrade elements just to tie it back to previous bioshock games. I really don’t understand how ‘people love these characters’. I can assume ‘people’ means teenagers and ‘love these characters’ means ‘one of the characters has tits’
how on earth did BF4 make it in there? The only rankings it deserves is:
“Biggest clusterfuck of a release”
“Most shameless raping of an otherwise good franchise”
Posted in TAY earlier:
Didn’t watch that GG list stopped watching ages ago, no point starting now, but ran some numbers on the list:
56% of games were post 2007 release.
81% of games were 2000 or later release.
19% of games were pre-2000 release.
Top 10 post 2007 – 80%
Top 20 post 2007 – 75%
Top 25 post 2007 – 80%
Pretty much sums up their demographic (which is obvious by the shows production).
Dark ages of PC, SNES, MEGADRIVE, SATURN and even Playstation 1… We lived in such a poor time apparently.

Obviously everyone is going to have their opinions of what should/shouldn’t be in the list, but seriously, no Quake? That game revolutionized not only First Person Shooters but also large scale modding. Class based FPS, Capture the Flag, etc – all came from Quake
While I agree there’s a tilt towards more recent games, I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing. On the whole, and speaking as somebody who’s been playing games since the late 70s, more recent games are more playable.
I’d rather play Resogun than Defender.
I’d rather play Civilization V than Civ I.
I’d rather play Age of Wonders III than Master of Magic.
I’d rather play Tales of Xillia than Tales of Symphonia.
I’d rather play LOTRO than Everquest.
I’d rather play Borderlands than Doom.
Given almost any old-school game, there’s a more recent game with more evolved mechanics and gameplay that I prefer. When I revisit those older games, I might play for half an hour and have some fun doing so, but there’s almost always a newer game I prefer.
The year is 2014. The interval between now and 2000 is the same as between 1986 and 2000. At the same time, the capabilities of consoles have increased quite a bit; many more games are being produced; and game designers have had the opportunity to learn from the mistakes of the past.
It’s easy to look back on the 80s and 90s and see the world back then with rose-coloured gaming glasses, but really Sturgeon’s Law applied then as it does now: 90% of everything is cr*p. We’ve just forgotten the cr*p produced back then because frankly, who would want to remember it?
You’re comparing newer versions of existing games (or similar games) against their original counterparts. The point is when the classics came out they redefined their genre, everything that followed only improved and added to what was discovered.
If this was the list of what you’d rather play your argument holds merit, but the top 100 games of all time needs to look at the games that dared to push the boundaries that existed and I’m sorry but bloody having Clash of Clans on there just makes the whole list null and void in my humble opinion.
You will have to sell me on Xillia being better than Symphonia. Maybe you should have used for that example Tales of Phantasia.
I never played Symphonia or Phantasia, but Tales of Xillia was sooooo good! Can’t wait for ToX 2 to come out in just over a week!
Play Tales of the Abyss if you can stand the graphics, otherwise play Tales of Vesperia. If you know Japanese, play the PSP version of Tales of Phantasia (Fully Voiced) or the PS3 version of Tales of Vesperia.
I swear the world doesn’t want me to play tales games. I don’t know Japanese and don’t have a 360, so there goes most of those options. However, I could play the 3DS version of Abyss (if I order it from the UK). Otherwise, the next on my list are Tales of Xillia 2, Tales of Symphonia Chronicles and Tales of Hearts R (I actually own a Vita!)
I played Doom a few months back and I enjoyed it more then I did borderlands.
Indeed. Borderlands 2 in particular lacks “fun” – it’s a grind and compelling, but is it “fun” – Doom, however, was fun.
I still rather play ToS over ToX.
No Street Fighter, that made my heart hurt 🙁
Fallout New Vegas is WAY better than Fallout 3.
Also, boo Bioshock: Infinite.
Whose idea was it to put Halo: Reach right before Halo 4? Personally I’d never put Halo 4 in the top 100.
and Resident Evil 4 is number 99!? Are you friggen serious!? It’s easily in the top 10, top 25 at most.
Counterstrike is at 98 and Minecraft sits at 4th. Take the list with a grain of salt my brethren.
I stopped reading at skyrim, i get its a great game but it no way its better then a large number of those games
9 year old’s flexing their voting muscle.
“Those games are old. Better vote the cool new one because it looks better and is easier.”
Yeah, this list reeks of that.
See neo kaiser I totally agree with the Halo Reach thing… but new Vegas was pretty meh
I dunno did I miss something in the game that didn’t just make it fallout 3 with new boring quests?
honestly I thought fallout 3 was supposed to be better?
Here’s a simple way to prove to yourself that New Vegas is better than Fallout 3.
Replay both games (as long as you want) and have this one, single question running through your head as you do.
“What do they eat?”
To be fair, this obviously isn’t the Neo Kaiser top 100 and as usual with these things according to the law of averages you will end up with a list that pleases nobody. The “recency” and “primacy” rules will usually also come into play. Just goes to show that you don’t need fancy graphics to create a well remembered game.
p.s. yes, I am aware I could just as easily have made this comment on many of the other posts so don’t feel I am picking on you. Feel privileged 😉
Once again Australians show they are incapable of voting.
In 6 months time the games industry will announce hiding entire levels of games behind pay walls just for Australians in order to save the industry within the country.
I agree with you on Fallout NV. It’s more “fallout” than FO3 by a wide margin. FO3 was Elder Scrolls with some post-apocalyptic paint.
I also concur with RE4 – loved that game, but I stand by RE 2 being a better game. Silent Hill 2 as well, but that’s another story…
No Naughty Bear = terrible list
No Final Fantasy VI…no credibility…boooo
In all seriousness though, just taking this with a grain of salt. Different people, different tastes…
My biggest problem with the list was why was FIFA 14 there? And pretty high. What a weird choice people voted for. I have no problem with the list having alot of modern games on it. If the game is awesome, it doesn’t matter if it came out last year or 15 years ago. However no max payne 2 makes this list invalid.
Yeah, i’d be interested to know the average audience age of GG. Would make the list easier to understand. Myself, i own 27 games on that list and out of them would probably only put half in my top 100.
If I was a cynical prick I’d guess GG’s audience was largely composed of Art Students and 12 Year Olds.
…I guess I’m a cynical prick.
You know what people should do when they do a “Top 100 of ALL TIME” list?
Discount the current and previous year.
In this example, GG would have had to accept games that were 2012 and earlier.
So sure, you’d still get Skyrim, but it would force people to think harder about their choices, rather than “I’m playing this game right now and enjoying it, so it must be a brilliant game worthy of being in a top 100 list”.
Exactly like all those games that you play through once but struggle to do again.
Or weight games by age, so that votes for an old game are worth more than a vote for a more recent game. This sort of list is always skewed to recent stuff.
The other way is to always include the results of previous years’ votes. Over time, old but great games will still keep getting votes year after year, newer but faddish games won’t and will drop down the order.
But then you’d lose The Last of Us. And we are not going to think any less of that game in 20 years, let alone 2.
Unfortunately there will be collateral damage in games that are brilliant and do deserve to be in the Top 100…but it will stop things like Fifa 14, or the latest Battlefield/CoD iteration being in there simply because John Doe sinks god-awful amount of hours into this game, so it must be brilliant, until the next edition comes along, in which case THAT is a brilliant game and must be in the Top 100.
The votes are in!…..BUT Bioshock is a much better game than Infinite.
Infinite was fun at first, but when you realise how bad the game design is, along with the ridiculous story trying to be deep, it’s pretty bad.
It’s like the voters just googled “metacritic highest rated games” and chose all the hot new recent releases.
Wow, no System Shock 1 and or 2…
Opinions, man.
Opinions might not be wrong, but they can still be stupid.
Actually opinions can be wrong. TASTE can’t be wrong.
It can be kinda wrong 😛
Wrong can be opinion, but stupid can be taste. :S
a link to the past at #83.
Ocarina of Time at #3
Good game. fire up youtube. look up EgoRaptor and his ‘Sequelitis: a link to the past vs ocarina of time’
enough said.
i also now remember why i dont watch good game. its hard to take hex and bajo seriously.
Well, I’ve played 26 and have a stack more from that list.
Honestly, can’t complain about it. What is “top”? Most fun? Most important? An industry landmark? Game that’s stood the test of time?
The industry changes so much each generation that hugely important games from the mid 90s might seem like clunky relics now. I tend to just run down these types of lists trying to pick out what I’ve played and sometimes getting a push toward picking up something new.
MIA on the list……
Descent,
COD,
Counter Strike,
Doom 3,
Unreal Tournament.
Yes I’m old school…
What about TUROK!?
Doom 3 was crap. The HL2 scene in Ravenholme was scarier than the whole of Doom 3 put together.
You know, after playing Doom 1 and 2 I never once thought that for Doom 3 they should suddenly turn into a horror franchise…
Ocarina of Time. Aah childhood memories! Everywhere I go I see it these days. I’m tempted to get it on the 3DS but I don’t want to destroy my childhood nostalgic memories…they only seem good until we replay them.
Wow, it has SMB, SMB3, SM64 but no SMW. Surprising.
This. SMB and 3 have a ton of nostalgic value and are definitely some of the greatest games created in their era, but World is so far better, building on top of everything that made those games good. Same with Galaxy and 64. 64 defined an era and established the parameters of 3D platform games, but Galaxy is all that and much, much more. Finally, SM3DW needs to be a top of them all. It took everything that made both World and Galaxy great and managed to fuse it in a single game.
Eh, can’t say I totally agree with you. I used to be constantly at odds over whether SMB3 or SMW were my preferred game. But now my answer is SMA4 😛
And like I mentioned in Mark’s 20 Games thing the other day, I don’t get the hype for Galaxy. Still rate 64 over the pair of them.
3D World was pretty brilliant though. Gotta get back to what I was doing with that.
We all know that Super Mario Sunshine is the best Mario game! That, Double Dash and Smash Bros Melee are why the Gamecube will always be my favourite console of all time!
It’s not even right on recent games – Mario Galaxy 2 is MIA 🙁 At least Persona 4 made it I suppose.
Good for you Watch Dogs.
Glad to see Goldeneye got the respect it deserved. Awesome multiplayer memories. Super Mario 64 was robbed though!
I really don’t get what everyone’s hard-on for Goldeneye is. I remember playing it at a friends house and coming from PC shooters at the time I was seriously pissed off at the lack of simple things like walking off ledges and jumping, aiming was also the most bullshit thing ever.
It was awesome at the time it came out. Multiplayer was amazing – rotating between different houses for a few hours after school each day.
Had actual proper objectives that changed with the difficulty. Non linear levels, could play stealth or gung ho.
Enemies could hear gunfire, so using a silenced weapon was useful. They also reacted to where they were shot.
Plus it was actually better than the movie.
Lots of those were firsts for a FPS.
Earning cheats added heaps of replayability as well – spent hours earning and messing around with them.
Guess I really like this game 🙂
Planescape: Torment appears nowhere on this list. That tells me everything I need to know.
1. Skyrim
Y’all are some abysmal people, Australia. A-bys-mal.
It’s not so much Australia as it is the casual gamer crowd. They’re everywhere, really.
……No Super Metroid? Or Metroid Prime?
And here I was thinking, no no no no no no no this list won’t do, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic pops its head in surprisingly and quite high too. A little faith in the world is restored.
This is like the 2013 election all over again. HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?
I watched the show and the list was a bit meh. I was confused as to how some games fell where they did, until I worked out that the younger demographic would have been the ones voting the most (spare time and all that). If you look at it from that perspective you can see why so many newer games came in so high (despite many not considering it “top game”) and sooooooo many of the older games came in so early or not at all.
anyhow it was good to see you on the TV Mark, I knew you were a big Dark Souls fan, but man then I saw your eyes light up when talking about it. Try explaining that love of a game to a non gamer and they just don’t get it (usually followed by a sideways look)
Some games transcend the realm of entertainment and really become part of us, or maybe we become a part of them. (a bit like petrol heads and their cars I guess).
anyways I enjoyed the show for the entertainment it was.
After putting over 600 combined 360 and pc hours into Skyrim, at least that into GTA Online and around 500 hours into Red Dead Redemption, I’m happy that my votes helped those games into the top 10.
Great list – if you like games that are currently being played. Just because it’s new and everyone is playing it, does not make it a great game. Will they be playing it in a year’s time? Probably not.
Gaming has been around for all of my 41 years and has been an integral part of my life for 35+ years and it is sad to not see any reference to a pre-japanese console. Surely Elite must get referenced. This was Retrogamers best game of all time. Way of the Exploding Fist?? Any Geoff Crammond driving games present??? Even the Star Wars arcade should be in there! Next time, do a list of all time, but separate them by decades. 25 games for each ten years and you have 100 games over 40 years, which just about accounts for all. And that is my two cents, rounded up to 5 cents!
Australia you disgust me Doom at 55 why do I live here -_- at least top 20 come on nay Sayers you’re morons
Seems to be some dissent amongst Kotakans about this list – I suspect the demographic of Good Game voters is a bit different to Kotaku’s demographic…
So come on then Kotaku – lets have a proper vote/poll here… 🙂
Convenient list. Confirms that Good Game has nothing for me and I need not bother watching.
Still, I didn’t realize things were so bad.
They didn’t put together the list, the community did.
Indeed. This list was voted by the people who are interested in Good Game and participating in their polls. I don’t seem to like the same stuff that they like… Good Game falls into that category also.
They advertised the list on the kids version too. Notice Clash of Clans in the list? That’s where that and Minecraft came from.
I love when top 100 lists comes out and all of a sudden the nostalgia hipsters come out of the woodwork and complain with their fists waving in the air. *grabs popcorn*
Good Game: Mortal Kombat, on Sega Genesis, is the best video game ever.
Old Gamers: I disagree, it’s a very good game, but I think Donkey Kong is the best game ever.
GG: Donkey Kong sucks.
OG: You know something? YOU SUCK
new found respect for Bajo. voted for wow 🙂
This seems like a very skewed list. In my personal opinion you get a better one by going to a site like GameRankings and clicking the “All Time Best” button. It gives you a good indication of how the game was received in its day, and feels a lot more objective.
you know whats really fucking amazing about this list.. Half Life 2 didnt make the top 10
I think it’s nigh time for the video game equivalent of The Movie Show. I like the hosts of GG and I think they do a great job, but the tone is heavily focussed on appealing to a certain type of ‘gamer’. The fantasy enthusiast. The cosplayer. Of course there is nothing wrong with those interests, but they do not reflect the totality of people that enjoy games and the show going out of its way to appeal to them inevitably colours the tone of the entire show. I’m 32, I love games, why isn’t there a show that discusses and reviews games (not the game industry) that doesn’t make me cringe to have on when anyone else is in the room. Surely I’m not the only one!
Minecraft is the 4th best game of all time? Ok.
If they could it would be spots number 1-10…
No FF6 and Chrono Trigger is at the bottom of the list?
Twilight Princess above Wind Waker?
No Donkey Kong Country 2 or Super Mario World/Galaxy?
It’s almost as though only PC and Playstation owners who hate NIntendo and were born in the 90’s were the ones voting.
Battlefield 4 was half way up this list? It’s literally, and this is coming from a previous fan of Battlefield, is the worst FPS I’ve had the displeasure of playing.
This list is bizarre.
Lol this list is a complete joke…. Where are all the innovative indie titles? How does battlefield4 score higher then Chrono Trigger let alone get in the list at all.
No Galaxy?
mhm
The list also made me angry and I host the show! But, lists are meant to make you angry and are fun to talk about. I think Skyrim winning actually makes perfect sense. It’s appealing to so many, from ‘hardcore’ to ‘casual’. It’s a game that ticks so many boxes, lets people pay it the way they want to and rewards them for it.
Sif no Rock n Roll racing in top 10.
*looks at number one*
No, just… no.
Admittedly I only played it for two hours, but quit it out of pure boredom and complete disengagement with the story & characters… which for a role-playing game is not a good thing.
People you’re supposed to be into tech/games/etc
Simple Rule: New is better than Old
Once you think old is better than new then you’re passed it.
Time to move on.
It’s creative, dude… as in subjective. There were some fantastic older games and there are fantastic modern games. In fact, there’s a bit of an issue with the development cycle being so long these days that huge creative talents get involved in fewer and fewer projects (like with Squeenix), although the new generation has brought in enough talent to balance it out for the most part.
While I was watching this I see Tomb Raider at 23 and I think, “I wonder where Dishonored will land”
What the Holy Flaming Frank, were the people they surveyed a bunch of misfits to miss Dishonored? I was shocked.
Reading some of the above comments, people are talking about more recent games appearing on the list over older versions that were better. I was surprised there’s no Civ 2, no C&C, no RA, no Total Annihilation, these games defined a genre and they’re nowhere in sight but Civ 5 makes the cut? Civ 5 is a good game but it’s not Civ 2 good.
Where was Junglist? Boo! Zero stars!
You’re my new best mate.
I’m happy to see a distinct lack of the Mario rehash-factory on here. Good list.
Not a bad list, but far too many modern games that really don’t deserve it (Bioshock Infinite and Watch_Dogs for two). Glad to see lots of Valve games made it, and seeing all the Zelda games brought a smile to me. Great show regardless of my veiws of the list, well done @markserrels
Well, at least BG2 made it on. Seeing Conker there gave me a laugh. Probably the only top 100 list with Conker’s BFD making contention. Seeing all that Bethesda, Bungie, and Rockstar makes me sad. Then again, I didn’t vote. 😛
Wow there is lots of people clinging on way to tight to older games here! The question isn’t if you can play said old game now and still enjoy it, your nostalgia alone will take care of that. The question is can you give it to someone who has never played it before now and will they enjoy it? More than a current game of similar genre? It’s the only fair way to compare new games to old.
(no I’m not 9, my first console was a Sega master system so I’ve been around a while)
@bathmatt I love Torment. It was one of the most important games of my youth. While I would say it has probably the best narrative in a video game, I’m not sure it deserves a spot in this list, because as an actual game, it’s pretty horrid and has definitely not aged well.
I think more than any other Infinity Engine game, Planescape really highlighted the dull, dry combat of that system. It didn’t have the minutiae of Baldur’s Gate’s strategic options to help mask the bad taste IE leaves.
When I replay Torment these days, I usually put cheats on to hurriedly slog through fights and get to the next dialogue tree (much like what people say about Mass Effect games, actually)
To me, a great game should be a harmonious blend of gameplay and depth. My vote ended up being for Red Dead: Redemption, because of all the games I’ve played over the years, I’d never enjoyed such a skillful synthesis of narrative, freedom and just plain fun.
So yeah. That’s why I think it’s not there. I can’t say that Watch Dogs was more deserving of a spot though. :\
