October is the month where ALL VIDEO GAMES EVER are generally released, which makes this week a bit of a strange one. Sure, we have a few major releases — the new Borderlands, The Evil Within — but it’s actually a little bit quiet… TOO QUIET.
A City Sleeps (PC)
What is it? The latest game from Harmonix. A soundtrack driven shoot em up that looks spectacular.
Should you care? Man, I love pretty much everything Harmonix does. I’m super keen to check this out.
Akiba’s Trip: Undead & Undressed (PS3/Vita)
What is it? This is a game where you kill vampires by stripping them of their clothes. Yes it was made in Japan.
Should you care? Apparently it’s pretty damn average.
Bik – A Space Adventure (PC)
What is it? This is a point and click adventure that apes the very first generation of graphic adventures.
Should you care? It’s reviewed fairly well, and the art does stuff to my nostalgia bone. Looks great.
Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel (360/PS3/PC)
What is it? It’s Borderlands game that was made in Australia!
Should you care? Borderlands is Borderlands. This is on last-gen consoles only, which sort of takes away the excitement somewhat, but still well worth investigating.
Deep Dungeons of Doom (PC)
What is it? A dungeon crawler with (gasp) a retro aesthetic.
Should you care? This has been given props for being a unique, stripped down dungeon crawling experience. Sounds interesting.
F1 2014 (360/PS3/PC)
What is it? It’s the new F1 game ya dingus.
Should you care? Fans tend to love this series. What a redundant statement, but you get what I mean. This is an enthusiasts thing.
Legend of Grimrock 2 (PC)
What is it? A modern dungeon crawler with an old school heart — that’s how the developers are selling it. Sounds good to me.
Should you care? The first game did well, I’d expect this to do the same.
The Evil Within (Xbox One/PS4/360/PS3)
What is it? The much hyped horror game from Mikami.
Should you care? I’m thinking it could be great, but I’d wait for reviews before making the call on buying.
Did we miss anything? What are you buying this weekend?

Words cannot express my hype for The Evil Within.
Oh wait they just did.
Will be interesting to see how it stacks up against Alien: isolation
Yeah I couldn’t cope with Alien Isolation, first person horror freaks me out but third person (a la RE4) is fine for some reason.
It’s an intense game for sure
After seeing the stupid levels of hype etc for Watchdogs, then Destiny and a few others this last year? I’m eager for it but have been purposely staying away from things so as to not overdo it with exposure. I’m praying it turns out great, horror games have started becoming actual ‘horror’ games again lately, which is exciting. So here’s hoping!
Whaaat? Horror games are tensed and subtle to make your imagination the true enemy? Pfft, please. Companies like EA regularly express how bombastic explosions and chunky machine guns are what make horror games scary.
lmao tell me about it.
Dead Space 1 : MANY changes of pants needed.
Dead Space 2 : Gun bro ahoy. Some jump scares.
Dead Space 3 : RAMBOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. (“Hey this is EA, it’s still scary right? No? We’ll market it as horror anyhow…”)
I’ve been thinking about Dead Space lately and i think it just was scary cos no one knew what a necromorph was, it was scary to fear this thing you didnt understand and had never seen. Number 2 was kinda like “oh hey i know these guys” and jump scares and then number 3 was you were a badass Isaac who has killed hundreds of these… and only full of jump scares and micro-transactions…
Which broke my Gamer Heart cos i so badly loved dead space 1 ;-;…. and 2 a little
Number 1 was original, it relied on jumpscares but it also had good game design. The necromorphs were creepy, weird and disgusting. The further sequels just felt watered down.
Dead Space 1 blew me away. I bought it on impulse at JB when it dropped to $67 a few weeks after release hearing it was like Event Horizon and finished it in 2 sittings. Fantastic.
Got DS2 Collectors day one. Was appalled. DS3 in some ways went back to the first but in other ways turned it into co-op garbage too.
Damn it EA – EVERY FRANCHISE WHY YOU DO THIS!?
It’s true isn’t it. BF2 I consider the highpoint of the series. 3? Meh. 4? Wtf EA.
Borderlands and Evil within for, I imported Akiba on vita bout a month ago, it’s not a very good game
Yeah I had it on PS3, was not good at all. If anything it was more for the interest in seeing Akihabara re-created virtually.
I just want to know when Costume Quest 2 will be out on console 🙁
This. I’m not gonna lie. I’ll be checking once a day until it shows up.
looking forward to the pre-sequel, but i really dont know which character ill play as ive always played as Axton/Roland or Kreig
If you’re an Axton/Roland player, Wilhelm will probably be your best bet as he has two drones that provide shields and do damage. For Krieg style, Fragtrap will most likely be the best choice.
Personally, I’m going Athena. The “Sword and Shield in a world of guns” thing is right up my alley. Plus she’s somewhat the tank character which is my style as well.
I think I’ll be playing Nisha. She’s definitely my type of character and her ability sounds really good.
I’m not sure if this is a thinly-veiled hint to us …
Evil within, i predict a solid 7.5 to 8. Above average, not fantastic. at least that’s my hope at the very least.
I actually predict a 5-6/10 average across the board, the game’s systems are so dated they will only appeal to the hardcore survival horror fans who are okay with tank controls and cheesy characters. That being said I will still play it to death no matter what score it gets (i.e. I played Duke Nukem Forever through to the bitter end).
I hope it evens out to an even 7 then lol. And yeah I’m also gonna play it no matter what, although I was not able to finish Duke Nukem Forever. I applaud you for achieving such a feat!
Legend of Grimrock 2 is out?! HELLLZ YEAH!
First one was a lot of fun and the editor was superb. Very keen to get out of the dungeon!
@markserrels you missed a potentially really important one: Minecraft for Vita on the 15th. Vita seems like a perfect fit for that game.
Both Borderlands and The Evil Within are of interest to me…
Borderlands however, I will be hoping for an GOTY Up-port with DLC…
The Evil Within will just have to wait due to lack of funds though.
“Borderlands however, I will be hoping for an GOTY Up-port with DLC…”
Me too! This game looks great but would look amazing on the PS4/One if they did it right.
Yes, given that I’m still working on Borderlands 2 – I’m willing to wait for an Xbone port
CLAPTRAP!
Also known as the one-time Interplanetary Ninja Assassin Claptrap!
Pre-Sequel! The first game I’ve preordered in a long long time. I want to play this with buddies on day one.
Should be seeing Minecraft for Vita dropping on the PS Store this week too. Pretty happy about that – Vita should make a damn fine portable MC platform.
And whilst certainly not a new game, WoW’s 6.0.2 pre-WoD patch drops this week. Some pretty big changes coming, including the stat squish, and an overhauled UBRS. As well as some major inventory changes and Blasted Lands Iron Horde invasion.
Looking forward to Borderlands. Playing on PC so the last gen console thing is a non issue for me. I was going to pre-order but there doesn’t seem to be any incentive to do so on Steam from what I can see.
Hyped for The Evil Within, hope my pre-order is justified.
I love Borderlands but I refuse to buy it until GOTY edition. You know it’s gonna happen, it’s just a matter of time.
