There was a total lunar eclipse just now. The blood moon! And boy did it look amazing. The entire eclipse was only viewable in parts of eastern Asia, Hawaii, parts of Australia and New Zealand as well the Western portion of North America.
Most of Japan was able to see the full eclipse, and people gathered outside to watch this year’s last lunar eclipse. The below photo was taken at 6:51pm Japan Time by Kyoto-based game developer Dylan Cuthbert of Q-Games. This is just as the eclipse was getting underway.

Note that in Japanese, a lunar eclipse is called “gesshoku” (月食) and literally refers to eating the moon.
And, of course, many people in Japan were kind enough to upload their photos to Twitter for all to see. In case you were sleeping, or lived in an area that couldn’t witness the eclipse, have a look.

Unfortunately cloudy where I was in Sydney. We caught glimpses of the moon being swallowed up, but it was pretty disappointing on the whole.
Was the same last time we had this lunar eclipse earlier in the year too. Figures.
There were more clouds than on Bespin here in Brisbane. Not even enough light to break through the clouds for the most part.
The first part was hidden by light cloud here in Adelaide but shortly after it cleared and the peak and aftermath were visible. Was pretty cool. 🙂
I was doing the weekly nightfall on Destiny and forgot all about it 🙁
Looked awesome in Canberra, anyone know if it looks much different to the top image in a non light polluted area?
Everywhere other than Canberra must have been socked in by cloud, given what my friends have recounted. In the national capital, other than just as the moon crept into the penubral shadow, the sky was cloudless and crystal clear.
