As I said earlier today, we’re getting to the business end of the nominations and now it’s time to talk console games. What were your favourite console games of 2014?
I did most of my gaming this year on consoles, mainly the PlayStation 4, so this is sort of my favourite award. Here are some of my nominations.
Alien: Isolation
Dark Souls II
Trials Fusion
Destiny
Mario Kart 8
I’m going to be honest and say that 2014, in my opinion wasn’t the greatest year for games in my humble opinion, but those are the games I enjoyed most, how about you?
Drop your nominations in the comments below.

South Park The Stick of Truth
Even though it was censored!
Honorable mention goes to Telltale Games
The Walking Dead Season 2
Dragon Age: Inquisition. Hands down.
My new favourite game.
This by a mile – nothing else came close. It was one of the more refined/polished games to launch as well.
In no particular order:
alien: Isolation
sunset overdrive (if it’s story were another 5-10 hours longer it would have been MUCH better)
Dragon Age: Inquisition
This is your friendly reminder that Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze was a game of this year. And that it was rad.
I assume Bayonetta is also rad, even though I have not got around to playing it yet.
Slim pickings. Destiny is the one I’ve probably been putting the most amount of hours into. Wolfenstein was a great blast. South Park as said before was brilliant.
Other than that, this has been a year for me to try (and fail) to clear out my backlog of games not yet completed.
Diablo 3 Reaper of Souls. So damn good on consoles. Been my go to game between games and even playing others I want to go back.
Don’t think it’s going to get much love, so I’m nominating Hyrule Warriors, I’m still playing it almost every day.
I really don’t know! As much as I love Dragon Age Inquisition and a few others, nothing this year makes me feel like, if i looked back on 2014, THAT would have been the game I remember that year. That being said…I do quite enjoy Dragon Age Inquisition, and it probably comes closest for me…
* Alien: Isolation
* Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel
* Diablo 3
* The Evil Within
* The Last Of Us Remastered
South Park The Stick of Truth
I’ve played next to nothing on a console this year, however the two games that stand out to me are:
GTA:V remastered
Oddworld New ‘n’ Tasty
Hands down best console games for me this year,
I want to say Smash Bros. Wii U, but I haven’t played it yet – still not out in Australia. And, unfortunately, it was a bit of a slow year, with most of my hours put into either Forza Horizon 2 or Tales of Xillia 2. So, I vote Forza Horizon 2.
Dark Souls II
Mario Kart 8
The Walking Dead Season 2
In that order.
South Park: Stick of Truth
Alien: Isolation
Mario Kart 8
Samurai Warriors 4
The Walking Dead Season 2
Super Smash Bros 3DS
Bayonetta 2
Mario Kart 8
Hyrule Warriors
Diablo 3
I think I’ve played a grand total of 3 (maybe 4?) new games on console this year… of those, the best have been Infamous: SS and Destiny (our first run of the Vault of Glass remains my favourite coop experience ever, alongside our first successful run through hard mode).
– Infamous: Second Son
– Valiant Hearts: The Great War
– Far Cry 4
– Mario Kart 8
Honorable mentions to The Last of Us Remastered (I prefer to keep my GOTY to completely new releases), Little Big Planet 3 (haven’t played enough yet, but it’s great so far), Wolfenstein, AND PROBABLY COSTUME QUEST 2, AS IF I KNOW. Ahem.
It still isn’t out on PS?
Not on PS4, nope 🙁
I’ve resolved that if it’s not out by next year (I have games enough to see me through till then), I’ll just get it on PS3.
$10 on steam atm
3 D:
The Wolf Among Us. Most of it came out this year. 🙂
Bayonetta 2 – Those Masked Lumen duels… Amazing!
MarioKart 8 – Especially with the DLC.
Pullblox World – Seriously, one of the most played games in our household.
Spec Ops : The Line.
Don’t care what year it came out. Still gets my vote for this year.
Hahaha, you’re like friggin’ Kayne. “Yo, 2014 games, I’ma let you finish, but Spec Ops: The Line… “
Yeah, I picked it up in a Steam sale earlier this year and it blew me away. I’m so over shooters, but Spec Ops: The Line stood out for me. Definitely stuck with me long after I finished the game.
I just finished spec ops for the first time last night. I went in knowing next to nothing about it. Definitely worth a look!
No one has any love for Shadow of Mordor?
Shadow of Mordor
Dragon Age: Inquisition
Walking Dead Season 2
Damn straight! If only it had come out a few months earlier…
Still haven’t played it, mine was lost in the post and had to be resent but now I’m on Dragon Age.
Destiny
Shadow of Mordor
Dragon Age Inquisition
In chronological order. Reverse that for order of preference.
Dark Souls II
Bayonetta 2
Maybe BlazBlue: Chronophantasma
Mario Kart 8 for me. The first batch of DLC has come at just the right time and renewed my love for it all over again.
I’m also enjoying Dragon Age: Inquisition, though I haven’t yet left The Hinterlands.
Oh, and I really liked Valiant Hearts. That was good too.
I WANT to leave the Hinterlands, but there’s still so many icons to wipe from the Quest map! MUST… DO… QUESTS!
MK8
Mario 3D world
Bayonetta 2
All three basically perfect games.
oh yeah Mario 3D world. utter genius. big tick.
3D World was a 2013 game though wasn’t it?
Oh damn, you’re right!
I only played it this year too 😛 Same with Link Between Worlds and Pokemon Y.
Slow on the uptake. Totally skewed my view of what was when.
Destiny. Have not played anything else since it launched.
(Well, I put a couple of hours into GTAV…)
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor (Even though it was a little on the short side)
Dragon Age: Inquisition
Dragon Age: Inquisition no doubt about it. Massive bonus points due to my wife loving it as much, if not more, than I do 🙂
As someone who has not played much this year. in no real order
Trials Fusion (really need to pick it back up).
NBA 2k15
Watchdogs.
Lego Movie (despite some horrid bugs)
Wow just shows me how very little games i get.
NBA2k15 was far too broken at launch to qualify
For me it didn’t matter as i don’t play online. Although was it really as broken as some of the other games this year? like Drive club?
I don’t play online much but my characters were all online saves and flat out wouldn’t connect or would drop out constantly in the middle of games and the way they’ve built it it does not save if the connection drops. They refused refunds of real world money spent on VC too to top it all off. Mine was doing this for about 3 weeks with them deleting or ignoring any posts/messages I sent their support (their forums had a lot of people complaining). I ended up making an offline save and playing that, recently tried some of my online players and they seem stable now though. The gameplay is good just that launch really pissed me off.
I think the gameplay has even got worse since 2K14. Same goes for the presentation.
The pc version of 2k14 was presented nicely but the xbox one version was horrid, 2k15 is a HUGE improvement in presentation. Gameplay wise I think I prefer 2k15 too but there’s some things that have been muddled up and made stupid or confusing like the way you have to go undrafted in myplayer and the way your skill points change your type of player seems odd, I had a guy who was rated 80 at 3pt shooting but listed as an all round wing who was harder to hit 3s on than a guy with 70 3pt shooting who was listed as a 3pt specialist because his other stats were lower.
Top 4
Alien: Isolation
Mario Kart 8
Destiny
GTA V PS4
Tales of Symphonia Chronicles
Dark Souls 2
Hyrule Warriors
Bayonetta 2
I think that’s my entire purchase list for this year’s releases.
Destiny.
Dragon Age
Destiny
Err… there were other games?
Mario Kart 8 and Alien Isolation.
Mario Kart 8
Hyrule Warriors
Smash Bros 3DS
Smash Bros Wii U (not out yet but still)
Mario Kart 8
South Park: The Stick of Truth
Both are hands-down the best gaming experiences I’ve had this year.
Mario Kart 8
The Evil Within is absolutely amazing
I made a rule at the start of this year that I wouldn’t be including remasters in my list.
That really narrowed down the options.
Also, damn you @markserrels … I wasn’t ready to do this yet. I’ve still got to work through Valiant Hearts, Never Alone, and a few others.
My console game of the year so far is either:
Wolfenstein
Forza Horizon 2
Dragon Age: Inquisition
Sunset Overdrive
Alien: Isolation!
Then Mario Kart 8
MK8
Dragon Age: Inquisition
Danganronpa
ummm…actually can’t think of anything else I thoroughly enjoyed.
Maybe Shadow of Morde.
Dragon Age Inquisition
Same as PC, Alien Isolation!
Wolfenstein
Farcry 4
Sunset overdrive
Bayonetta 2 And Smash Bros U
Mario Kart 8
South Park
Abe’s Oddysee: New n’ Tasty.
That’s the sum total of what I bought and what I think qualifies.
Valiant Hearts
Hatsune Miku: Project Diva F
Hatsune Miku: Project Diva F 2nd
Shadow of Mordor
Tomb Raider Definitive Edition
Borderlands The Presequel
Bayonetta 2
Bayonetta 2
Bayonetta 2
I bought a WiiU solely for that game, and I wasn’t disappointed.
Destiny has been nominated? 2014 really has been a poor year for games….
I think Destiny has ended up with nominations for best console game and also biggest dissapointment!
Pretty good year for horror fans. Here’s hoping for more…
Alien: Isolation
The Evil Within
Dark Souls II
and a little Mario Kart 8 for some stress relief
Wolfenstein – seriously this is a top game.
Dragon Age: Inquisition
Destiny – funnily enough I could also put this in biggest disappointment category. Still love it to death and play it every day though….
Dark Souls 2
Mordor (Shadow thereof)
hmmm probably some others i’ve forgotten in the deluge of games in the last months.
