Arnold Tsang is a concept artist at Blizzard. We’ve featured his work before, but now that Overwatch is out in the open, we can showcase his work on the much-hyped shooter.
Tsang did all the character pieces you see here, giving us one of the first looks at the game’s bright, colourful and very comic booky cast.
You can see more of Arnold’s work at his DeviantArt and Artstation pages.
Fine Art is a celebration of the work of video game artists, showcasing the best of both their professional and personal portfolios.

I feel the character design is simultaneously:
1. Extremely well done and high quality
2. Very cliched
You know, the samurai who looks like a samurai. the dwarf that looks like a dwarf. The cyborg ninja that looks like a cyborg ninja. And so on…
And all time manipulators (Tracer) are naturally British. Though your point made me wonder. What is a dwarf that doesn’t look like a dwarf.
That clean shaven one in Dragon Age.
A Viking!
Haha, that’s a great comment
The “samurai” doesn’t have a sword, instead he ONLY has a bow. Also, if you get picky and say that a samurai can use any weapon then I’ll get pick and say what makes him a samurai as technically speaking a samurai is; one who serves.
That’s all well and fine, but only serves to reinforce the point that he looks like your typical Samurai. Nasu no Yoichi used a bow, but if you look at one of the more known Samurai in gaming circles, Mitsurugi (Soul Calibur), you can see why it feels like he’s a bit cliche.
He honestly just looks like a rad Asian dude with cyborg legs and a bow. Yeah he has tatts, could be gang related, he has long hair, I have long hair. There isn’t a lot that says he is a samurai but rather more that says he is possibly of Japanese descent.
I really love how they went with their promise of not sexualising women.
What are you saying! Having exposed thighs and a semi-exposed chest make PERFECT sense if you’re going into a fire-fight! I know if I were headed into territory with shrapnel, bombs, fire, bullets and arrows, I would leave a good amount of thigh exposed because that’s a SUPER sensible thing to do. Don’t our soldiers march into combat showing off a good amount of leg and maybe their chest?
Apart from the sniper and the blue engineer girl, they aren’t very sexualised I’d say.
I wonder, they said they were going to do it right, but they still sexualised two of the characters as you mentioned.
