There used to be two main ways to take outposts in Far Cry: sneaking around and stabbing everyone inside, or going in guns blazing. Thanks to the addition of the tiny helicopter, though, Far Cry 4 players have discovered a third option: death from above.
Here’s YouTuber “punish” showing us all how it’s done in a recent gameplay video:
The footage might make attacking an outpost by air look like a dizzying affair. And it is, to an extant. I’ve tried to do something similar both in single-player and multiplayer and found that it can be tricky to gracefully steer a helicopter (“buzzer” is the proper name) with one hand and shoot a grenade launcher with the other. But that’s also what makes this player’s feat so impressive. I mean, he even managed to disable one of the alarms. And take the outpost without having reinforcements called in. That is what I like to call “pretty damn impressive.”
Here are the steps to follow if you want to try something similar:
- Step 1: Equip a proper sidearm. The helicopter is a vehicle like any other at the end of the day, which means that you can only use one-handed firearms when piloting it. Thankfully, Far Cry 4 has the wonderful M-79 grenade launcher that’s perfect for our purposes here. Alternatively, you could also play in co-op and have you or your buddy ride along with any two-handed tool of destruction as well.
- Step 2: Find a helicopter. Pretty self-explanatory, I guess. But those darn things can be pretty tough to pinpoint sometimes! Once you get your hands on a buzzer, I’m telling you: don’t let it go anytime soon.
- Step 3: Rain down hellfire. Again, pretty self-explanatory.
Once you get the hang of flying-and-shooting, taking outposts by air like this is an effective way to snag more of them from Pagan Min’s minions. But keep in mind that you won’t get as much experience as you would if you seized an outpost stealthily — i.e., without triggering any alarms or being detected. Is there a way to do even that with the tiny helicopter? None that I’ve managed to pull off. But I’m sure that Far Cry 4 players are doing their best to figure out a way.

This is a better way to take down Pagan’s Wrath convoys and stuff. I much prefer the stealthier no-detection methods for outposts. But still, the buzzard is super fun.
Destroying supply trucks is even better though. Wingsuit, parachute, land on truck, C4, jump off, detonate, don’t look at explosion and walk away slowly to look like a badass.
Walk away slowly while reloading your shotgun for extra badass points.
My favorite way for clearing out an outpost undetected is to send in your guns for hire then sniper from afar. Great fun.
Death From Above is fun but repetitive and a chopper isn’t always available. I found that a suppressed sniper rifle works wonders from a vantage point. Combine that with the uPlay-point-purchased automatic pistol with the suppressor attachment and the Concurve Bow for close-combat. Full stealth package, rounded out with the M-79 for when things go pear-shaped. This worked perfect on my first stronghold, going it alone.
Don’t forget that you can drop grenades, Molotov’s and bait from the buzzer as well .
Game is broken for me I think. It crashes every time I try to do the Longines Himalaya mission, and even though I’ve done hardly any Story/Golden Path missions (a couple for Sabal, couple for the stoner bro’s, met Hurk but done none of his) there are none showing up on my map. The Longines mission is the only one available.
You’ve probably completed all the required story missions and have only one left to unlock more. If it keeps crashing, delete your game file and start again. I unfortunately had the same thing with Red Dead back on PS3 and had to start over. Once I deleted the game file, it let me finish the mission.
Haven’t played this yet but liked releasing the caged animals in FC3.
This is a rookie question so please be gentle: I just got this on PS4.
How do I bring up the main menu/world map/upgrade section? I swear I’ve tried every freakin button on the controller.
Press in the touch pad! Took me a while to figure out too 🙂
Cheers Deegs, I must have missed it, I thought that was just for the weapons select menu.
