The Cockiest Way To End A Smash Bros. Match

The Cockiest Way To End A Smash Bros. Match

Last weekend, a Smash Bros. event called Shockwave 11 went down. And during a Grand Final match with two impressive players, we saw what is probably a master class in swagger.

The showdown was intense. A Ness, controlled by a player with the handle “Awestin,” faced off against a Captain Falcon player with the handle “Bwett”. For the most part, Ness dominated the field with great pressure, and on-point combos. Like the commentators in the match say, the matches are pretty much highlight reel fodder. You should watch the entire thing in this upload by Tourney Locator, if you have 17 minutes to spare:

If you don’t, I suggest skipping forward to the 13:30 mark, which is where the final match in this set goes down. That’s when Awestin claims victory with a great combo against Captain Falcon — and then, when the entire thing is over, Awestin looks at Bwett like this:

And he follows that reaction up by telling the game to save the replay of his win in an incredibly bold move. You can hear the audience react to that replay save with “OOOOOH!!” The commentators, D1 and Infinity, are taken by the move, too:

“The disrespect is so real,” D1 says in response. And it’s true! Saving the match on the console is sort of like rubbing salt on the wound; not exactly the nicest thing to do after winning in a match. But at the same time, Ness the character feels like such an underdog, and Awestin was playing so well, that I ended up rooting for him anyway throughout the entire thing. The swagger is surprising, but arguably earned.
