Newsflash: January has been a bit rubbish for new releases and this week is no exception. Next week perks up somewhat with Dying Light. This week is the normal round-up of niche Steam games with a handful of HD remakes for those of you that are interested.
Among Ripples (PC)
What is it? Ever wanted to play a game where you control the eco-system of a pond. Yeaaaahh…
Should You Care? I’m actually intrigued. Anything that’s a little bit out there grabs my attention.
Blackguards 2 (PC)
What is it? The sequel to a fairly-well received turn-based strategy game
Should You Care? Those who enjoyed the original should pay attention, as should fans of the genre.
Citizens of Earth (PC)
What is it? I’ve heard/read about this game before, but I can’t remember where. This is a game about politics. It sort of looks like a weird political version of Earthbound.
Should You Care? I think it certainly looks interesting. Might wait on the reviews though.
Combat Monsters (PC)
What is it? A CCG-RPG game. Expect to see a lot of these in the next year or so.
Should You Care? Thankfully this is a good one. Really good actually. Fans of Hearthstone looking for something new might be interested.
Exodus Wars: Fractured Empire
What is it? A futuristic turn-based wargame with some fairly high-end production values.
Should you care? Seems to have reviewed strongly. Tabletop gamers in particular will want to check this out.
Grey Goo (PC)
What is it? This game is surprisingly po-faced for something called ‘Grey Goo’.
Should You Care? Still, this looks like a half-decent strategy game with high production values. Worth investigating.
Human Extinction Simulator (PC)
What is it? Another turn-based strategy game, yawn right? Well this has a fair amount of buzz about it.
Should You Care? It doesn’t look like much, but apparently this is fairly innovative and polished from the strategy perspective.
Resident Evil HD Remaster (Xbox One/PS4/PC)
What is it? This is a HD update of GameCube version of Resident Evil which was in itself a remake. A remake of a remake.
Should You Care? I’m still keen on this. The GameCube version of Resident Evil was so good.
Saints Row Re-Elected + Gat Out Of Hell (Xbox One/PS4/Xbox 360/PS3/PC)
What is it? Another of them there HD remaster things.
Should You Care? This is a good deal if you’re desperate to play something. I’d leave it if you played the original though.
TorqueL (PC)
What is it? TorqueL is a weird puzzler from Japan that looks really intriguing. It’s about stretching, rolling and solving spatial puzzles.
Should You Care? Man, I’m keen on this. Seems like a great time waster. Simple controls, complicated mechanics.
Did we miss anything? Are you buying anything this week? Let us know in the comments.

Dyling Light will be a fun distraction for a month or so. Hope it holds out more than 2 weeks to the least, Hoping for 3. want 4.
I haven’t experienced the HD remake of RE so I am quite keen for that. Also SR4 I have finished before, but for 65 bucks with all of the DLC and the new Gat Out Of Hell expansion its a pretty sweet deal so I will play this also 😀
Resident Evil (GC) was bloody great. You won’t be disappointed – just get ready practice your classic Resident Evil controls. Up is forward. Down is Back. Right/Left is rotate. 180 degree turn is down and Action Button… 😉
I think this version also has the option for a more modernised (aka non-tank) control scheme, if the original feels too clunky.
Can anyone confirm that? I was going to pass on it but if the controls have been upgraded that might change my mind.
I can’t seem to find the trailer that confirmed the new control scheme option in English, but this PC Gamer review happens to mention it (“If you can’t stomach the tank controls there’s a new analogue option that works well with a controller…”).
*EDIT* I just stumbled upon the official Resident Evil website, and it lists that”You can play using the original control scheme or an alternate control scheme that lets you just push the analog stick to move in the direction you want to go.
★You can switch the control scheme during gameplay in real time.”
Sweet. Thanks.
It’s not really fair to lump Gat Out of Hell under a general “Another of them there HD remaster things.” because it is a new, standalone game in the SR4 series and should have been mentioned separately. It’s only the “Re-elected” package that’s a HD remaster affair.
I also heard a rumour from the Playstation EU blog people that Suikoden I and II are out this week.
Edit: Remembered the rumour wasn’t as random as I thought.
Dying light has been delayed in Australia
I hadn’t heard that.
I’ll just buy a US Xbox cash card off the net and switch the region on my Xbone if the game is any good.
The game is already available for download on the US Store.
its only phyiscal copies that have been delayed ( affected everywhere but north america), digital copies are unaffected and will go live on january 27th (not our time, but US or EU time)
I never played SR4 nor RE1, so I might pick up one or the other or both or neither.
My interest in both is just passing….
I’ll get RE if they’ve removed the loading screen doors.
Nope, they are still there.
It’s part of the tension.
It would be nice if they kept them, but ONE of the door animations were different, preferably a hand bursting through or a dog, catch the player off-guard.
Gat out of Hell might tide over a few hours, a fun little expansion like Blood Dragon was.
Grim Fandango next week and then nothing until March when GTA V PC comes out (hopefully)
Man it’s going to be a long wait to the order 1886. At least there’s Grim Fandango HD and Resident Evil later this month.
RE HD interests me the most. One of my favourite GC games and I consider it the best RE game overall.
I picked up the RE:HD game back in December from Japan, it’s worth the money.
I’m getting the Saints Row IV remaster because I enjoyed the game the first time and I want the DLC too. This actually saves me money.
Thank God H1Z1 is fun
Upvote to counter the downvote for having an opinion on a game.
Planning on getting the Grim Fandango Remaster and Resident Evil, both games I never played when they were released.
More DriveClub DLC!!! That’s all I need.
I’d like to see Resident Evil 0 released. I played the others but for some reason I completely missed all the GameCube releases. Also Resident Evil 2 would be quite nice, even if it was just a straight port.
I guess I’m the only one interested in Grey Goo, since it’s an RTS from the original C&C developers.
