The story of The Scourge and The Lich King has always been important lore, and even though the original Lich King, Arthas, is no more, his replacement, Bolvar Fordragon, will return some time in the future. Probably not in the next expansion, and even not in the one after, but he’ll be back sooner or later.
YouTuber Bruty gathered three of the most popular theories floating around the web about his return:
- An even more powerful scourge powered by the Red Dragonflight and lead by Bolvar Fordragon returns to Azeroth.
- The Burning Legion invades Azeroth at the end of Warlords of Draenor and since The Scourge were originally created and commanded by them they will awaken Bolvar and we’re all going to die.
- This is probably the most likely outcome: Bolvar Fordragon didn’t go completely mad at the end of Wrath of the Lich King and he and The Scourge would return as an ally against the invading Burning Legion.

Just did an xmog run through ICC last night, still the best looking expac ever
What is “xmog”, “ICC” and “expac”?
I haven’t played wow since 2008 and even then I was barely adequate…
Xmog: Transmogrification, which is altering the appearance of your gear to look like another piece of gear of the same slot, IE; Different helm for helm
ICC: Icecrown Citadel, the end raid for Wrath of the Lich King
Expac: Expansion, IE; Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King ect
End raid of WotLK was Ruby Sanctum, technically.
I just quit WoW due to 3 Orc based storylines. A return of the Lich King would make me return in a heartbeat as Wrath was my favorite Xpac. I just hope Blizz remembers that story based questing is key to success, not trying to cater to the Vanilla/BC rose colored glasses crowd like they did with WoD
Green-jesus, green-jesus and more green-jesus! That said, I’m really liking the WoD story, despite some pacing issues at 100 and I play Alliance.
