Last December, Kotaku reported on Final Fantasy XV‘s combat. At the time, details were somewhat abstract. Today, we have a detailed list of how exactly the controls function.
Square Enix showed off the basic controls in tonights FFXV walkthrough, and the images below are from the demo (via Japanese site Hachima Kikou). Perhaps seeing how the controls work will give you a better idea of what it’s like to play the game.
Camera Controls
Xbox One: Right stick
PS4: Right stick.
Walk
Xbox One: Left stick
PS4: Left stick
Run
Xbox One: Left Stick
PS4: Left Stick
Jump
Xbox One: B Button
PS4: X Button
Dash (Free Run)
Xbox One: Left Stick Button
PS4: L3 Button
Note that while in Dash, you can automatically jump over things in front of you. Like so:
Attack During a Battle Scene
Xbox One: X Button
PS4: Square Button
Combo Attack During a Battle Scene
Xbox One: Hold Down X, Or Press It Repeatedly
PS4: Hold Down Square, Or Press It Repeatedly
Shift (Warp) During a Battle Scene
Xbox One: B Button
PS4: Circle Button
Note that using Shift/Warp uses MP. Also, realise that MP is slightly different in Final Fantasy XV.
Shift Break During a Battle Scene
Xbox One: B Button
PS4: Circle Button
The key here is to lock on an enemy and, essentially, launch a warp-like attack. Likewise, this uses MP.
Guard/Parry During a Battle Battle Scene
Xbox One: LB Button
PS4: L1 Button
This also uses MP.
Using an Ability During a Battle Scene
Xbox One: Y Button
PS4: Triangle Button
Your weapons have abilities, which can be selected by toggling right or left on the Dpad.
This is a very basic look at Final Fantasy XV‘s combat and controls. We’ll learn more once we get our hands on the game’s demo.

Awesome!!!
So Realtime combat – not turn based? Could be interesting
mmmmm I should go back and finish FF12 before this come out
Kotaku branching out into writing game manuals now?
I must say I was expecting a discussion on how it compares to previous battle systems, not just “X button does this, A button does that”.
