Last night, we attended a preview of Contiki’s Robots Unrivaled show, which is running for three days in Sydney this week. The live performance is based on Tokyo’s infamous Robot Restaurant and includes many of the same dancers, robots and performers that made the show a raging success in Japan. This 60-second highlights reel will give you a taste of the insanity you can expect to encounter onstage. (Plus photos!)
To celebrate the launch of its 13-day Japan Unrivalled trip, youth travel brand Contiki is hosting a frantic rendition of Tokyo’s Robot Restaurant in Darlinghurst, Sydney. It’s an experience like no other, with sword-wielding robots, giant sea serpents, twerking pandas and pole-dancing fembots all boogieing to ear-melting J-Pop in front of a reeling auidence. It’s kind of like having scary/sexy rainbows shot directly into your eyeballs for 30 minutes straight — and it totally rocks!
Tickets went on sale last month and sold out in approximately seven minutes. If you were lucky enough to snag a ticket (or just want to see what all the fuss us about) feast your eyes on our video below:
Weird and wacky stuff, eh? Contiki is running three sessions each evening at 5:30pm, 7:30pm and 9:30pm. The $40 admission includes two alcoholic drinks and a deconstructed bento box. As mentioned, the show is unfortunately sold out, but there are a few punters selling tickets online with prices starting at $110 for two tickets.

Thirsty to see more? Here’s a bunch of photos from last night’s event:
Guests are initially greeted by waitresses serving Asahi, sushi and other Japanese delicacies. The 1980s cyberpunk shades are a nice touch.
Yes, that’s totally a Star Wars stormtrooper wiping down a stripper pole: a portent of the decidedly non-robotic antics to come.

Seems pretty tame compared to the Japanese restaurant.
No kidding, the official thing is mindblowingly amazing.
Don’t know about ‘mindblowingly amazing.’ I think it’s something you should check out if you’re in Japan, but it’s a tourist trap, kinda like Dracula’s cabaret only dumber. The fact that this is run by the Contiki people should set off some alarm bells. It looks like a lousier, TEDx spin-off.
Yeah, I watch the video and it seemed pretty lacklustre. Glad the tickets were sold out before I could buy one. Looks like a waste of $40.
hop feed is good
That’s not Robot Restraunt !! No effing way!!!
Btw it’s not truly a restraunt but it’s an amazing experience in Shinjuku. My bubs was made there . Only In Japan
You conceived your child at the robot restaurant in japan?
wut?
Melbourne Transformers! 😀
Needs more flashy LED lights… and more robots.. Looks more of a cosplay bar/restaurant imo.
Phew! Glad I didn’t buy the tickets to that. How is that even robots?
Kinda pissed off with these guys. Me and about 8 of my friends signed up on their webpage for more info about tickets, not one of us got a reply before they sold out. Pretty poor if you ask me.
I wonder if they will try and recreate the atmosphere of the original by employing touts to rush you as soon as you leave offering special prices on sexy massage.
Nope. Nope, nope, nope.
That’s an exceedingly poor version of the real thing – tourist trap or not, it’s one of the best things to do in a city brimming with awesome things to do.
I’m so glad I didn’t go to this.
