Today, a number of people across the country obtained access to a test build for “Gears of War” on the Xbox One, as shown in the screenshot above. Although we suspected it might be part of an as-of-yet-unannounced Gears collection including a number of games in the series, this may in fact just be a remaster of the first Gears of War game, if a new Polygon report is accurate.
Polygon reports that Microsoft and developer Black Tusk are, as expected, remastering Gears of War for the Xbox One, and they say they have seen screenshots from a remastered version of the opening cinematic in the original Gears of War, which was released for the Xbox 360 in 2006. What we don’t know is whether this will be a standalone remaster or part of a bigger compilation, like the Halo: Master Chief Collection that Microsoft released last year.
Rumours of a Gears collection have been floating around for quite some time now, ever since Microsoft purchased the franchise and announced plans to make a new entry with their subsidiary studio Black Tusk. What would be surprising, however, is if Microsoft and Black Tusk only remastered the first entry in the series.
We hear this Gears test build will go live today around 9pm Eastern (11am AEST), so we should know more then. Microsoft has yet to respond to Kotaku‘s requests for comment.

I liked Gears of War but was anyone really asking for this?
Nope. But who cares if people ask for it because $$$$$$$$!!
If it’s a collection then yes I am asking for it. The collections are good for people like myself who missed some of the original games but want to pick up the new one when it launches.
I never played the original gears of war, so yes, I definitely want this.
I was!
Yeah I need this, wanna finish 3 and play judgement before they inevidabely make a fourth game
I’m probably up for a HD re-release of the series if it’s all 4 games, all the DLC and priced at budget. But I would expect this as a precursor to a 5th game in the series.
Edit: Oh and I expect it to work the day of release.
if this is a collection and it has seriously 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 achievements they can gtfo if they expect us to regrind those.
They were cool at the time but I agree, never again
Agreed those achievements were needlessly brutal and uninteresting, I think I finished the original Gears of Chore with a grand total of 80 Gamerscore. Also any re-master of the first game needs to bring the multiplayer up to the excellent standard of the third game to avoid it becoming the shotgun spam game again.
I can sort of see why they’re only doing one game though, after the Halo experience I think they’ve proven that multiplayer becomes a mess when there are too many options.
