Riot Games Crowns Its First Ever Australian Champions

The Oceanic region just got its first ever Australian League of Legends champions and that team is the Chiefs, who claimed the OPL Split 1 Championship crown last night in a 3-0 victory against Dire Wolves

This means the Chiefs will fly out to Istanbul to take part in The International Wild Card Invitational (IWCI) on April 21-25 for the chance to play in the League of Legends Mid-Season invitational against the best teams from the US, Europe, China, Korea, and Taiwan later this year. The Chiefs will compete against teams from Turkey, Russia, Japan, SEA, Brazil and Latin America for one single spot.

“It feels absolutely amazing that we won last night,” said Simon ‘Swiffer’ Papamarkos, Chiefs Captain. I’m so proud of all the boys and that we were finally able to win the Oceania Final. I’ve been looking forward to a moment like this and getting the opportunity to travel to the International Wild Card since I joined the team in 2013. Now that has become a reality.”

The Chiefs were favourites to take out the first Split and delivered in spades. It would be great to see the team perform well enough in Turkey to make it all the way.

It’s super interesting: the strength and depth of the League of Legends pro scene is incredible. Seriously, it’s easier to win the bloody Champion’s League. Pretty incredible that becoming Australian champs is only good enough to get you to the Wild Card tournament. It doesn’t even guarantee you a spot in the main finals. Regardless, good luck to the Chiefs over in Turkey!
