How To Get The Most Out Of Destiny’s Cool New Bounties

How To Get The Most Out Of Destiny’s Cool New Bounties

If you played Destiny anytime in the last 24 hours, you found a surprise waiting for you in the Tower. The Queen’s Wrath is back! (OK, it probably wasn’t a total surprise, given that you had to download a 6GB update first. And the game greeted you with a huge announcement pop-up informing you about it. Anyway.)

The back promenade in the Tower has reopened, and look who it is! It’s good ol’ Petra Venj, the Queen’s Wrath bounty lady. She’s arrived in advance of the House of Wolves expansion, which launches this coming Tuesday, and she’s got some new bounties for everyone.

What To Do

I spent yesterday evening clearing a bunch of the bounties, and thought I’d break down how the whole thing works. Here’s what you do:

1. Go to the tower and pick up the available bounties from Petra Venj. Each one looks like an actual bounty this time, with the name of a target and their outline. A new bounty opens up each day; there are already five of them available: Two on Earth, two on Venus, and one on the Moon. The last Moon one unlocks tomorrow. Nifty.

2. While picking up your bounty from Petra, say her name out loud. Notice that it sounds like you’re saying “Pet Revenge.” Lol softly to yourself.

3. Head to whatever region the bounty you’re pursuing dictates, and wait. In a few minutes, you’ll see some notification text that says “A pack of Wolves is prowling.” That means it’s go time.

4. Fight off the waves of attacking Fallen. Eventually, the mini-boss on your bounty appears. The enemies are all high level, so they can be pretty tough. Fortunately, there’ll be a lot of people at a given battle, since everyone is doing these pretty much constantly.

5. Once you beat the boss, things get interesting. You’ll get an “Ether Key” with a countdown timer. As you may have guessed, that means you have a limited amount of time to find a chest that has spawned in the area, which requires the key. The ether chest has a gold lance of light shooting up out of it. It looks like this:

In the chest, you’ll get some crafting materials, some blue or purple engrams, or even — apparently — a key to open a chest in the Prison of Elders, the new horde mode that comes with House of Wolves. I’ve gotten a bunch of blue and one purple engram, but no chest keys yet.

Interestingly, the engrams you get won’t decode yet. The (safe) assumption is that once House of Wolves launches, they will decode to new, higher-level gear. (You should also be keeping any legendary engrams you get anywhere else, since they will also carry over and decode to better stuff on tuesday.)

General Tips

I’ve taken down a bunch of the bounties across my three alts. Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you go.

  • Once you beat the boss, don’t die! I died once, and lost my Ether Key. The chest was still there, taunting me:
  • Bring your Arc guns. These being Fallen enemies, a lot of them have arc shields, and it can take a stupid amount of non-arc gunfire to bring them down. Hooray Fatebringer! Hooray Song of Ir Yut!
  • Each encounter will start with a couple of enemies carrying the new Scorcher Cannon. Kill these dudes, and you can use the cannon yourself. They’re fun, and you’ll probably want to grab the first one you see and start wasting enemies with it. Resist the temptation and save your ammo for the boss. Scorcher Cannons are really powerful, but they have a limited number of rounds, so don’t waste them on enemies the other players could take out normally. No one likes the rookie who shows up and starts wasting precious scorcher rounds on scrubs.
  • Enemies can no longer be damaged while they’re hanging from dropships. If you’ve defended a warsat or fifty in your time as a guardian, you’ll know that’s a minor game-changer. No more firing rockets to clear out a bunch of dudes before they even hit the ground. You’ll have to fight them straight-up.
  • Time is a factor. If you take too long to beat one of the bosses, they will lose interest in the fight and bail. Be sure everyone is focusing fire at once. Jason and I let a boss slip through our fingers, and it was a bummer.
  • Once you defeat the bounty boss, keep an eye on everyone else you were fighting alongside. That can be the easiest way to find the chest.
  • You don’t actually need a bounty to get the chest; you can just go and kill the bosses on your own to get ether keys.

And that’s pretty much all I got. The folks at the Destiny subreddit have been collecting a thorough list of all the other new stuff in the expansion that I haven’t had a chance to check out. Sounds like there’s a new Fallen Pike that packs a mean punch, in addition to some other things. A big group of people has also been hard at work mapping the locations of the potential ether chest locations.

If you’ve got any other tips, I hope you’ll share below. It’s pretty nice to have a new thing to do in Destiny, huh? Tuesday should be fun.

  • Little tip. If you’re quick leave the area you are currently in and then return to the chest and it would have reset. Easy to do on venus because the areas are quite small and you can drive everywhere.

    • Tried that earlier today on the moon. Got out of the area on my sparrow, raced back only to see the chest de spawn just as I got close, ha ha.

      • It’s probably easiest to do in The Citadel, you can get the same chest 3+ times if you’re really quick.

        • Agreed, and confirmed.

Grab the chest and head straight to the closest linked location to the Citadel. As soon as you see the new location’s name pop-up, hack a U-bolt and go straight back to the chest again. Rinse, and repeat as much as you can within the 90 seconds.

Today I probably looted the ether chest around 16 times; not one prison key yet but a whole bunch of blue engrams.

        • Cosmodrome at skywatch is good. If the chest spawns near the fence overlooking the cliff near the entrance to the area, you GP an easily get it 3-5 times.

    • I did this for a few hours last night at Skywatch. The chests usually spawn near the opening to the lunar complex. Race back inside on your sparrow until it says Lunar complex and then race back out. I could get three cracks at the one chest each time. I have filled up on blue engrams and heaps of synthesis but no treasure keys yet dammit!

SKywatch is awesome too because at any given time there can be multiple events happening. Last night the following happened twice all at the same time:
      1. Defend the Warsat
      2. The enemy is moving against each other
      3. Fall at Urzok The Hated
      4. A pack of Wolves is prowling

It was a straight up war for about 10 mins straight. Must have been over 100 enemies on screen fighting each other and the 5 guardians who were there. Most fun ive had in ages.

      • I think i was there for that. Same thing happened to me a few times gamertag; R3d7iger. Give us a message if you remember me 😛 will be on tonight for the last target!

  • I’ve copped some fairly bad luck in my trial and error with the new bounties. Some of my tips include;

    – Watch out for area-specific enemies after you’ve completed the bounty and have your key (I was killed by an Ultra Minotaur whilst running for the chest. Death takes your key.

    – The HoW Skiffs tend to fly in without you being able to notice, so keep your eyes peeled.

    – Don’t swear too loudly when you get disconnected mid bounty.

  • these were pretty fun. a nice mix on the bounty system, although waiting for the event to trigger kinda sucked.

  • I was grinding over the weekend got heaps of blue engrams, a few purple and no damn keys.
Oh well, try my luck tonight after work for a key, fingers crossed.
