And it looks wonderful. Check out this Super Mario 64 hack: it’s called Super Mario & The Missing Memories, and it’s being created by someone who goes by MarioHacker14.
The footage makes the game look like it could have easily been an actual level in Super Mario 64, observe:
The level is one out of a whopping 27, each one with its own unique theme and design. Presumably, playing through the level will help the player recover Mario’s memories.

I’m not sure if Patty ever played SM64, but she’s awfully wrong.
This map had a whole lot of nothing between places while appearing to be about as big as SM64’s biggest levels, and the whole thing seems to be a linear path to that one single star.
SM64’s level design was great in that the worlds were made with the 7 different stars in mind, while not having much in the way of filler.
The headline’s pretty misleading too, seems like the most that level has in common with Rainbow Road is a few of the assets.
STILL, for a fan effort it looks like it could be fun, maybe, If you haven’t had your SM64 fix recently.
Nah dude, it was designed to be comparable it to the “Bowser in the Dark World/Sky” levels. They’re mostly linear, and the way to get the single star (not including the DS port) is to collect the 8 red coins. Not all levels consist of mulitple objectives in free-range maps. Plus this is only one of 27 levels, I’d say the designer has a few of those up his sleeve too.
I think it’s a great idea – Mario has always consisted of throwbacks to previous games in the franchise, it’s cool to see Mario Kart in the mix. Maybe they could include some real kart racing, like the penguin race or the Koopa race on shells?
