Love Live is an incredibly popular anime with incredibly devoted fans. But, you know what, the characters kind of all look the same.
Here, you can see the Love Live‘s Muse unit characters in their frilly outfits and with their different coloured eyes and hair.

But if you isolate only their faces and remove colour…

Granted, this isn’t the first anime to seemingly recycle faces over and over again… And it won’t be the last!

Though, drawing the hairstyles does seem hard.

This is why they’re colour coded by hair… and also differentiated by hair style.
I mean, here we have nine girls each with a distinct shade of hair. In reality, in Japan, 90% of the population has naturally black hair, although dyeing hair is very popular.
I’ve seen fabsubs which took advantage of this by colour-coding subtitles according to the colour of the speaking character’s hair. (It’s remarkably useful. AFAIK it can’t be done on a DVD. Not sure about Blu-Ray.)
In terms of actual face shape… I suppose it’s the result of having a large number of characters which all are supposed to be “moe”. :-/
So if you take out all the defining features of all the characters, what’s left looks the same? And this is shocking? If you are looking at the races only in anime, you are probably doing it wrong.
Wow! Just like South Korean models! …
