PlayStation 4 and Windows players will be able to play Rise of the Tomb Raider one year after the Xbox One and Xbox 360 versions comes out.
There’s been anger and disgruntlement at the exclusivity of Rise of the Tomb Raider, which was initially announced as an Xbox platform exclusive last August. Turns out that said exclusivity was on a timer, but neither Microsoft or publisher Square Enix has mentioned when that period would be over. That news finally came down the pike today:
Square Enix today announced its latest title in the critically acclaimed and award-winning Tomb Raider series, Rise of the Tomb Raider, will be available for Windows 10 and Steam in early 2016. The game will be a console exclusive to Xbox One and Xbox 360 for one year after its initial launch, coming to PlayStation 4 in Holiday 2016. Renowned developer Crystal Dynamics, a Square Enix studio, is leading development in the latest entry in the iconic series for additional platforms.
A year is a loooooong time to dodge spoilers. Good luck, PlayStation people.

A year! wow that’s crazy and lame msoft must have paid a pretty penny for that. also considering how this gen has been going by the time it comes out on PS4 we will be getting the “definitive” edition on X1.
Also still surprised its going to be on 360 aswell was hoping it would be current gen only so they take full advantage of the new consoles.
2 years into the current gen and developers are still holding back their games to reach as many people as possible, and it’s not the usual FIFA or NFL games this time
aw man, kinda bummed its coming to 360 aswell.
Content exclusivity such as weapons and missions in Destiny are bad enough, but an entire game exclusive for a year? With practices like this the industry is fast saying ‘fuck you’ to the people who matter: the gamers.
I can see it now. Game sells reasonably well on Xbone, PS4 owners get pissy, a year comes around, PS4 owners have forgotten about it, game doesn’t sell well on PS4, Square Enix bosses scratch their heads and say the PS4 isn’t worth making games for.
That said, I wonder how long the FF7 remake will be PS4 exclusive for. Square Enix doing anything for a quick buck it would seem
I still think they are stupid to release it the same day as Fallout 4. Delay it to Jan-Feb to at least give it a chance at selling and Sony people won’t bitch (as much) since Uncharted 4 will be out Mar-Apr.
Meh, just an expensive day for my wallet. But I’m buying fallout 4 and tr day 1.
I’m just getting fallout 4.
These fucktards won’t get any of my money for dumbass exclusive business tactics.
Haha, they don’t need your money, Microsoft game them the money you would have given them
Too damn right and good on you for taking a stand – after all, the time is now.
Their PR people will certainly have to fight for air time. I think it going to be somewhat drowned out by COD this and Fallout that.
Surely it’d be better to wait a few months for Bethesda to work all the kinks out of Fallout 4 though, right? They don’t exactly have a track record for being bug free on release.
Hold on. If it’s a one year exclusive, how could it launch for all platforms in the 2016 calendar year? I’m not the best at maths, but I feel like there’s a bit of a contradiction here…
Release is November this year. Same day as Fallout 4.
Noted. That would make sense. Must have misread this article.
Quote says PC/PS4 in “early 2016.”
Actually I’m confused by this as well Shane; reading it again it says Windows users and PS4 will get it one year later; however in the shaded text it says Windows and Steam will have it early 2016 and PS users will have it holiday 2016. WHAT THE HELL?!?!?
Edit: Went to another website where the author bothered actually explaining the announcement. Game’s out on XBOX this November, comes to PC/Steam early 2016 and comes to PS4 late 2016.
Double edit: Technically the first line in this article is incorrect.
That’s really unfortunate. I guess I’ll get the PC version, but that’s really disappointing for PS4 folk. :'( Though the Uncharted collection and Uncharted 4 will help ease the pain.
We’ll be fine, so many new games this year, I’m glad since I’d have to make some hard choices already!
I think that even if I bought it this year for PS4, I wouldn’t play it until sometime next year anyway, so there’s that. We might even get a souped up ‘complete’ edition for our trouble 🙂
The Xbox release date is the same as fallout 4, that’s gonna be a hard sell.

This game is being released in the exact opposite order I would like it to be.
Microsoft must have paid a pretty penny for a full year exclusivity. Even conservative 3 million sales potentially lost from the PS4 market. Also coming to Xbox 360. That is a kick to the guts… Goes in the file and forget basket for me.
Yeah, MS must be relieved though because I’ll bet they paid Square based on PS4 console sales estimates that have by now turned out to be on the low side.
On the upside, this means that whatever bugs are in it at launch get fixed on the Xbox releases, before PS4 and PC owners get it. At that point it may even have a GOTY collection depending on what DLC they have planned for it. So I’m okay with that
Hopefully the sales crash and burn for XBox and they regret their stupid decision and don’t do it for the 3rd game.
Is someone jealous? This isn’t “stupid”, it’s called BUSINESS. Just because Sony is your favorite does not mean that everything will always go their way.
Well that is just stupid by that time No one will care and then the franchise would die in the ass good one Square-Enix
I have no issues with the console manufacturers creating exclusives IPs for their console, but taking an established franchise (particularly one that is synonymous with playstation) and making it only available to Xbox players seems like such a dick move. At the end of the day it is a move that hurts gamers.
It’s going to hurt Square Enix just as much too, like I don’t know whether I’ll even be interested in this game in a years time.
I wouldn’t be surprised if this was a move initiated by Square Enix so they could release the game ASAP, but not have to directly compete with Uncharted on a Playstation console.
Xbox gamers get a new Tomb Raider game, Playstation gamers can play four Uncharted games in the meantime, while they wait.
Then they get to release it all over again a few months down the track (and as they’ve shown with the first game, re-releasing a Tomb Raider game is very, very good for their bottom line).
It’s the kind of odd situation where everyone kind of wins, or at least, no one entirely loses.
I think the deal was done well before Uncharted 4 was delayed. MS wanted something to compete with Uncharted 4 in that holiday period, but then it was delayed (probably wisely) and Sony also got the marketing deals on Battlefront and COD.
EDIT: I see your point, that Square thought it wouldn’t get that many sales on PS4 due to Uncharted being there, but I’m not sure it was Square that initiated the deal.
While I don’t like these sorts of practices, but I’m not too disappointed, as it sounds like there’ll be plenty of good game to tide me over until this comes to PS4.
I can only imagine this is going to hurt their sales though, considering how well the first sold for PS. For their sake I hope the pile of money Microsoft gave them offsets that.
This is where having both consoles is a good thing.
I can wait. There are plenty of other games to play in the meantime.
I was about to post exactly the same thing. I don’t really care if I get it right now or have to wait a year. If it’s good I’ll play it at some point, and until then there are still more video games that I want to play than I actually have time for even without this one. Hell, I still haven’t played GTA5. Am I bothered? Not at all, because I know I’ll get to play it when it suits me. Unless I drop dead in the meantime, but if I do then I doubt not having played a video game will be what I’m most annoyed about.
HERE LIES BRAAAAINS
RIP
I wish I’d been
able to play the new
Tomb Raider
Just wanted to point out how strange this is given the original Tomb Raider games were a Playstation exclusive if memory serves me.
Nah, I’m pretty sure the original was on Sega Saturn. Possibly even before it was on PS1?
PlayStation, Saturn and PC-DOS on the same day.
The amount of people who forget this that were around staggers me. The only reason TR2 on was not on Saturn was cause it tanked.
PC always got every TR on release.
And of course it will be full price on PS4.
Heh, not when I buy it. I’m quite happy to punish Square by waiting until 2017 to buy it at a low price. Yes it’s petty. Yes I’m denying myself. But hey, petty vindictiveness is all I have 🙂
Xbox one players will probably be playing the next Tomb Raider by 2017…. 😉
So will PS4 players 😛
Finally a reason to dust off the Xbox One!!!
Seeing as I only played Tomb Raider this last May, I can handle waiting a year.
Funhaus/The Know reported on this a month ago.
I’ll have forgotten about this by the time it releases.
Meh, I can wait. I may really want to play it, but not as much to buy an XBone just to play it (and hence supporting this stupid exclusivity bullshit).
Funny thing is you have Microsoft spend whatever ridiculous amount they did to gain a 1-year exclusivity with Squeenix for Tomb Raider, and now this year Sony have gotten back at them by pulling a similar exclusive deal (again, with Squeenix) for Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
I wonder which one has the bigger potential to be a unit seller, hmm?
They all do it.
MS also had Titanfall, Sony have Street Fighter 5, on and on it goes.
I cant help but feel like Kotaku has a different attitude to exclusivity depending on who gets it…
vs
Depends on the writer, I suppose.
My sentiments exactly. This is one of the symptoms I guess of one console becoming dominant – everything on opposing systems passes through the prism of ‘if it’s not my console it sucks’
Since they announced Rise of the Tomb Raider as a timed exclusive the Internet has been awash with disdain for Microsoft’s business practices meanwhile Sony made Street Fighter a PlayStation exclusive and no one bats an eyelid
And what about No Man’s Sky? Will that ever come to Xbox? I hope so but the masses seem to be happy that it’s a Sony exclusive – one standard for Sony and a different standard for everyone else I guess.
I guess that must be the rest of the Internet, outside of this site then because it’s not like that here.
I should point out I’m not talking “the masses” making their comments also. I’m talking about reporting in the article from the site.
Yeah sorry I read a lot of Eurogamer – that site is firmly entrenched in the console wars
Shit, I’d best run out and buy an Xbox One immediately!
Or…you know. Not.
Nope… quote says PC in “early 2016”, PS4 is “holiday 2016”
“But remember, we at Microsoft are totally serious about supporting the PC market. We really mean it this time…”
well yeah they only made us wait half (6 months). That’s like only feeding us one meal (of 3) a day instead on none (ps4) while they beat us.
-But there are 3 meals in the day Arkayn?
Yes it is Windows 10 only on PC.
-Oh I see. The other meal.
