Bandai’s new 1/72 scale Y-Wing model is a thing of beauty.
The detail on it is incredible, but I’m digging the accessories especially. The laser blasts are cool, the Death Star surface tile is a neat touch, and I love how it includes multiple pilot designs, depending on whether you want to rock a New Hope or Return of the Jedi look.
If you’re freaking out that it’s a “model kit”, it’s not a glue + decals kind of model. This one comes pre-painted, and will require minimal assembly (no glue needed).
Best part? Because this is a model, and not a Hot Toys figure, it only costs around $US30.

I need this, so very very much.
Y wing. Looks exactly like what a rag tag bunch of rebels would fly. Barely able to fly a z looks like it could fall apart anytime.
After the B Wing, it’s my favourite.
This series of models by Bandai Namco have been around for several months now in Australia at least. They have released several star fighters and other models. I have not bought or built any yet, but based on the other models BN produce, it should be good quality and straight forward to build.
It’s likely not to be a 1 hour assembly though. It may take a few days to finish, but the quality and detail are usually worth it. 🙂
Where do they sell these models? 🙂

But I’d like to see somewhere in Oz that has them.
Thank you Poita!!!! I found this here on Ebay for the X-Wing, I imagine that these guys might sell the Y-Wing as well:

Hobbyco use to sell them, but reading through other comments, the Disney ban hammer may have come down hard enough that they do not stock them any more. :-\
I have not checked for I guess a fortnight, but there was at least one model store near Haymarket in Sydney that sold that sort of stock. Those stores are not major chains though, and I don’t know if they do online ordering, at least not in English. :-S
I’d prefer not to be too specific, as I don’t think the ban hammers are appropriate for those areas. But if you are willing to try non-English stores, you may find something. 😉
That’s interesting, I didn’t realised they stopped dealing with one another. I’ll keep an eye out for that sort of store in my city, thanks!!
Hell yeh. Where where where?
I gave some hints about store types / locations in an earlier reply post. 🙂
I’ve been building bandais gundam MG line for a while. didn’t know they had starwars stuff. gunna need to pick this up.
But what does it look like unpainted?
Bandai kits you traditionally don’t need to paint – so that should be the snap fit colours, moddlers will add paint to change colour schemes, or make different weathering / personalisations.
It says it comes prepainted.
Must of miss that bit, don’t know how
Naturally Bandai sexy them up for photos, but all the new Bandai kits are pre-coloured in various colours of plastic. My advice is to look at dalong.net, the website of a hardcore Korean modeller who does a review of basically every kit Bandai does. Go to the Bandai-etc catagory and you can switch to the english catalogue, the Star Wars models are at the bottom. Obviously since this kit isn’t out yet he doesn’t have it, but look at the xwing to get an idea of an OOB (out of the box) build.
A couple of hobby stores / online outlets sell them in Aus, HOWEVER they are not approved to be sold here by Bandai due to licensing issues – they in fact are only supposed to be sold in Japan only. So far Disney hasn’t sent out the legal team. But yes this puts them into the same bracket as Bandai’s Macross kits, and Kotobukiya’s Zoid kits and a few other odds and ends. Unfort even though we carry Bandai and Kotobukiya model kits at our retail outlet via official Bandai Australian channels we don’t carry the Star Wars kits purely as we have seen Disney / Lucasarts / Fox e.t.c. go after companies before with territory rules – a huge shame and bit peeve and then some.
My god – I’m in love!!
I NEED THIS IN MY LIFE!
Well, about $40 with postage from Japan will put it in your life 🙂
I WANT IT IN AND AROUND MY LIFE!!!
FILL MY NEED-HOLES, BANDAI!!!
FILLLLL THEMMMM!!!!!
Sweet! Y-Wings were always my favourite of the original three ‘letter-Wings’
X-Wing, Y-Wing, A-Wing, B-Wing…..?
X, Y and A were the original assault/JTF, bomber and scout respectively. I didn’t think B-Wings were in the original trilogy, though after a bit of Googling it looks like it was given short shrift in ROTJ as a new assault class variant that wasn’t very photogenic and had scenes cut (so it’s probably more known from the X-Wing game expansions)
The EU seemed to go a little nuts then since there are I-Wings and V-Wings (interceptor classes), K-Wings (heavy bombers, same manufacturer as the Y-Wings), E-Wings (X-Wing successor), and probably a far few others which the SW nuts will tell you more about …except for Z-Wings since I think they were just a theoretical concept that never got an actual design.
Honestly a bit shocked someone could nerd out over starfighters and not know about the B-Wing in ROTJ, I think you gotta watch the movie again 😛

in my defense, I think the last time I watched the original trilogy was before the last remaster when the prequels were coming out >.<
Since I live in Japan it’s super easy for me to build the Bandai Star Wars models, I love them. I’ve only built Darth Vader, Stormtrooper, AT-ST and just finished R5-D4. They’re AWESOME. I’m not a painter so the normal fancy Fine Molds kits aren’t an option, but thankfully they’re so well made you don’t need to paint at al. Totally recommended. If you wanna order some your best bet is from an online store in Japan like HLJ.com, they stock them all. They have a weekly video series that has reviews of the kits too, check out gunpla tv on youtube.
FYI – just found that you can get most kits from Mighty Ape – No Y-Wing yet, though

It’s officially out on the 25th (something you’d think you’d put in a news article about it!)
I realise I’m possibly the last man on earth to come to this conclusion…but in seeing the Y-Wing here, are they supposed to be the same Y-wings for the clone wars cartoons, but without the cowlings on? Like the equivalent of taking the cowlings off your motorbike, and seeing all the bare rods and innards inside?
Or they another model that came out later in the SWU?
Yep they’re the same ships. I believe the lore is that the rebels later took the armour off to save weight since they’re so heavy (and have strong shielding anyway). Gotta sacrifice protection to keep away from the faster TIEs.
Ah ok, thanks! 🙂
I was gonna say “Why would being heavy matter in space?” but then I realised we’re talking about spaceships fighting Sith Lords and shooting lasers at each other. And that I should just sit back and enjoy the ride 🙂
Way late but really? They fought in atmosphere lol sorry dude not all battles were in space… space… space…. 🙂
I had a Y wing as a kid. It was my prized possession. I am 5 again!
