On the left side we have the lead from the excellent Vikings TV series in a wig looking stoic. On the right… well I suppose that’s an orc, if orcs looked like humans with horrid prosthetic faces.
Lothar, portrayed here by the talented and frightening Travis Fimmel, looks like a human ruler with a massive weight on his shoulders.
Only part of that weight is the obligatory shoulderpads.
Durotan the orc, voiced by Toby Kebbell, looks like that scene in Army of Darkness where Ash’s face elongates.
OK, not quite this bad…
Maybe a little more this…
But definitely something human mixed with something quite inhuman for twisted and mildly disturbing results.
Maybe it’s just the lighting — the shot of Orgrim Doomhammer from earlier this year was actually quite nice.
The two posters debuted at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend. There’s a Legendary Pictures panel going on as I type this, so hopefully we’ll have more shortly.

I think there might be an aspect of the uncanny valley at fault here, I think the main issue is we are so used to the cg animated ‘wow’ cinematic from the game that if we were to stand them up against real human actors it would be to much of a comedic comparison, the fact that it looks more human I believe is a good thing it will give the orcs a more human element instead of being a force at ends with the humans, even the by lines give a hint at this ” two worlds, one home” this is not a story about an invading force this is two stories from hopefully the perspectives of the humans and the horde. Also noting the Alliance poster looks very real and photographic where as the Horde poster doesn’t really look cg but more ‘painted’ and not as gritty and crisp as Lothar. for the alliance poster the elements look to be a human actor in-front of a matte painted scene of the soldiers heading to battle, where as the horde poster is very ‘soft’ and appears to be not even cg but a full matte painting, which is off putting when comparing the two, and the reason Ogrim looks more real is because essentially he is ( yes I know its cg but it has more com-positional elements than the painting) and you can tell the looking at the frame it is a physical entity as opposed to a painted scene. that is why it doesn’t look ‘right’. I don’t know maybe they did what they normally do in Hollywood and made do and fudge up a shot for the poster( it wouldn’t be the first time), after all Durotan is a very busy orc he would have time for such wasteful things as ‘publicity shots’! LOK’TAR OGRA!!!!!
It’s not the uncanny valley, but it’s something akin to it.
We aren’t looking at an artificial human approaching photo realism but an orc with clear humanoid features (Around the eyes and brow)
We know something is off, like the Predators from the first AVP movie which had human eyes and made it hard not to notice that it was a human under a mask.
The crunch is going to come down to how well the mouth moves and how real the entire face reacts. (Oh, and if the cgi gels with the live action)
Please, do tell me exactly what an Orc is supposed to look like? Especially given the LOTR orcs look different to the Warhammer Orcs and the Warhammer Orcs look different to the Warcraft Orcs, even then they look different to the 40k Orks and even then, the ones in the Hobbit for some reason looked different to the ones in LOTR…
Durotan looks more than fine, infact he looks great. It’s good to see they’re not making the Orcs hulking monsters but giving them actual identity.
Are you smoking crack?
Its a movie based on warcraft… so they are meant to look like warcraft orcs.
If it was a warhammer movie it should look like a warhammer orc.
If it was Lotro then the same, it should look like a lotro orc.
If it was a generic movie based on nothing else then yea your comment would make sense. With your logic you make a movie about the dragons in WOW starring a cat with wings tapped on… sure its not a warcraft dragon but…
My comment makes absolute sense. Durotan looks like a Warcraft Orc. All orcs look slightly different depending on the property they come from. Warcraft Orcs have been INCREDIBLY varied in their presentation over the years. Compare WC1 to WC3 and the Orcs presentation is almost entirely different. WoW has some almost ‘human’ looking Orcs as well. The comment is in line with what the writer said. No need to be a dick.
its not even close to a warcraft orc… going beyond the face, the body is all wrong.
It actually looks fairly like the newer models for the orc leaders.
If you havnt played wow in a few years, it might look a bit off to you.
You have no idea what you’re talking about. You’re just another fanboy who can’t see the forest for the trees.
Well Said Weresmurf, couldn’t have put it better myself.
Am keen to hear more about this movie, so far everything is looking to be pretty good.
Ps. Go Horde!
GO MURLOCS!
I want a Murlocs mini movie (in the same vein as a minions mini movie) before the main Warcraft movie now… And it’s all your fault
Like Minions, but R rated?
I could get behind that.
Powers? Posters?
😛
He looks fine, I think its just his expression that looks a bit off.
Blizzard presents the movie Warcraft! Featuring Garen!
Sorry, had to do it, the armor looks like Garens
The human armour does not look right to me. When I think human plate in Warcraft, I think dense and heavy, something with serious mass.
This looks more like light, flexible leather painted a metal colour. :-\
I know it’s impossible to actually wear one inch thick plate made out of iron, but, as I said, this interpretation just seems wrong to my eyes. :-S
Yeah the normal humans should look like this guy, the heroes though, they should be wearing more metal than their whole army combined!
Omg so much nit picking can’t we all just be happy they are making a Warcraft movie and not pick it to death before it even ships sheesh some of you are impossible to please
What a pile of bullshit. If you want people, readers, commentors to start extending their knowledge and thinking before they espouse negativity, how about modeling it first? Next time some kind of ignorant big deal is made out of nothing, reflect on your position as writer instead of dismissing it.
What does this even mean?
I thought the answer was going to be the human one that shows a guy who fell asleep while standing up.
I expected the answer to be the human one as well. The armour is way too lightweight. It looks like Boromir, not Lothar. Which reminds me. From the article:
Lothar isn’t a ruler, he’s a knight. The ruler at the time of this movie is King Llane Wrynn, Varian’s father.
