Melbourne-based developer Hipster Whale is best known for its iOS hit Crossy Road, though it’s soon going to be famous for another success — Pac-Man 256, a mobile game that pays homage to the original ghost-fleeing, pill-eating yellow pie. According to publisher Bandai Namco, the title has reached the milestone of five million downloads, which is a respectable number in anyone’s books.
Before you ask, no, that doesn’t necessarily translate into a few million dollars. Pac-Man 256 is free-to-play with in-app purchases and while it’s sitting rather high on the charts, it has yet to make an appearance in top grossing (well, the first 100 entries anyway).
Hopefully it’s only a matter of time before it does and regardless, making any sort of splash in the App Store is a massive task these days. For Hipster Whale to be two from two is a huge achievement.

Two for two? That’s hardly an achievement when you’ve chosen to reproduce two iconic arcade games. If they wrote their own original games, using their own ideas, and their original work was successful: that would be an achievement.
Frogger and Pac-Man, on the other hand, are pretty much guaranteed to be successful…
